Superb Psychological Drama....Malkovich is the Devil Incarnate !!

The highest praise I can give to any movie is that, while watching it, I begin to dread the fact that it will end. I found this story to be THAT enjoyable....and then some.

The lead character, Ripley, is presented as a well-aged version of the sociopathic con artist played by Matt Damon in "The Talented Mr. Ripley". As played by the inimitable John Malkovich, this older, wiser Ripley is infinitely more sophisticated, sly, treacherous, and fascinating. He lives in a wonderful Italian villa with a gorgeous wife/mistress who knows and embraces his true nature. When publicly insulted by a neighbor, played by Dougray Scott, he initiates a plot to gain revenge, ultimately turning the innocent man into a hired killer who is then tortured by his own conscience....a punishment that could never affect the consciousless, sociopathic Mr. Ripley.

Malkovich is a unique actor, never content to merely show up and speak his lines convincingly, he actually BECOMES the character...and every devilish smile, lick of the lips, flash of anger, etc. becomes an expressive action by the character, not by the actor. He is so completely suited to this role that it is impossible to envision anyone else playing the part.

The dialog is wonderful....complex, intellectually stimulating, and natural. Indeed, some of the comments on the nature (and absence) of conscience and guilt achieve the level of fine literature. Conversations are generally riveting, the humor is generally very dark, and the suspense reaches Hitchcockian levels. As the Scott character, who is dying of leukemia, sinks deeper and deeper into the depravity of his hapless plight, he actually begins to seek, rather than fear, death.

This is a very sophisticated, emotionally involving story that will appeal strongly to mature viewers. It never received the attention it deserved, and ranks among the best of the "undiscovered" movies. I give it my highest recommendation.

dead dogs are nice

Simply, this was a nice reward for the scores of video game fans out there waiting for the next Mortal Kombat. Yeah it's basically the next generation "trapped with dead people" film but it has a wicked style that makes it stand out from the other zombie flicks. What really shocked me was the acting. It's about time we got people on the screen who can carry a line as well as shotgun. As far as the DVD the highlight was surprisingly the commentary. Paul, Milla, and Michele are hilarious. Commentaries are usually straight forward and a little on the dull side but this trio of crackups just had me rolling on the floor. Yes it's true Resident Evil is not ... and worth the cash.

Nono my friend....Thank Youuuuu Mr. Acavano!!

All I can say about this movie is that it is a laugh a minute. Between the quips of Joe Piscopo and Danny DeVito, who are running from Mr. Costello (Dan Hedaya) and his gangster mob after losing 50K at the track, and the crazed Mr. Acavano, this movie is amazingly funny. The movie is absolutely worth watching just for Mr. Piscopo's reactions when they lose the 50K. Check it out.

Max Dugan Returns

This movie has been one of my favorites. Great acting, writing, and good fun for the whole family. I recommend to all my friends who are ill, depressed, and feel "old". The actors are sterling in choice and performance. My modern day answer to "family fun with values" dilema.

"DANISH SCUM!" -- ladies and gentlemen, Dr. Stig Helmer

Lars Von Trier, like David Lynch, is an accomplished film director who plays with television narrative -- and succeeds. Just as Twin Peaks stymied North American couch potatoes, The Kingdom is a wild combination of soap opera, supernatural horror, morbid humor and a quirky cast of characters (best character: Stig Helmer, the Swedish doctor who hates all things Danish). Collecting the first four (or is it five?) episodes and presenting it as an extended film allows even the most televisionphobic filmgoer to enjoy its offerings. I've read how The Kingdom II has showed in American arthouse theatres, but so far it hasn't reached Canada -- I'm anxious to see the next chapter(s) in the theatre or on video.

Frank Behrens has is right! Terrific Hoffman!

Agree with Frank's review and feel this is certainly the best video available. Would probably be nice if the Lyon version which is so soundly trounced was available on CD with such a great cast. I saw live the Met's production with Ramey (all 4 badguys), Domingo (Hoffman) and Vaness (all 4 female leads) which was truly wonderful matching this version if not exceeding it, but, it's not available on video, as usual. I recommend this as excellent until a better one is filmed and released.

Who then Now? 2.

This DVD has it all. It's got the original who then now, and their new DVD deuce. It's also got about 20 or 30 short video clips mostly about 30 seconds - 1 minute, but there are some longer ones. I would recommend this to die hard fans. If you own Who THen Now? and really like it, pick this up. This DVD is more serious though, it explains alot about the band, although there are some parts where they just goof off like in who then now? and it's good to know that such a big band can still be a bunch of goofs when their not on stage.

Fantastic Swashbuckling Tail

This is definetly not Dumas Count of Monte Cristo. It doesn't follow the book close at times and is far fetched from it at others. It is however a great movie and a great way to introduce this young generation to Dumas.
The Count of Monte Cristo tells the tale of Edmund Dantes. A man that is imprisoned for a crime by his best friend Fernand Mondego that he did not commit. He spends 13 years in jail at the Chateau'If.(thats not how you spell it but it's close enough for me) It's there that Edmund meets a fellow prisonman that trains him in literature, economics, and swordplay. Dantes gets out of jail then goes a spree for revenge to get the men who put him jail.
This is a great story of revenge. Jim Cavaziel is perfects as Dantes. He does a great job. He has a swagger and plays Edmund great when he poor and when he's rich. He shows his abilities as a good actor because of the different levels to the character. I'm really impressed with him and hope to see him more in the future.
Guy Pearce is good as Fernadn Mondego. I was first impressed with Pearce in L.A. Confidential. It's good to see him finally showing his acting abilities again. He plays a great bad guy. You can't stand his character and that's because Pearce plays him so good.
This is an awesome tail of revenge. If your a diehard Dumas fan you won't like this. I'd reccommend the Richard Chamberlin version for you. However if you like a fast paced tail of revenge full of swashbuckling this is the film for you. It's a great action film that reminds us why we go to the movies: To Be Entertained. You'll like this one.

Please Give Us MORE: A&E!!!!!!!

I loved the Hornblower series. It made me want to re-read the Forester novels again, and I did. Cast and crew did an amazing job of recreating how hard navy life was during that period in time. Ioan Gruffudd was simply terrific as Horatio. I can't wait to get my own personal copy of the videos.
