Speaking Parts, Brilliant!

An excellent film by Atom Egoyan. The moody atmosphere enhances the plot and the production is excellent. McManus fans who know him through Tales from a Parallel Universe, or Lexx as it is called in the UK, will love him in this. McManus' portrayal as the ambitious, but emotionally ambivilant Lance is fantastic as is Arnesee Khanjan's performance as the frustrated Lisa. UK buyers will be pleased to know that this tape will play well on a video with duel PAL and NTSC format, with a decent PAL t.v. and is a must. Well worth the wait and not as pornographic as some reviews make out, but very erotic in parts. Not rated but not suitable for veiwers under eighteen.

A Sinner Repents

God loves a sinner come to his way of understanding and hopefully Peter Jackson will be as kind to me. After viewing the movie in theater on its initial release I was not overly impressed and ho-hummed the film. I was bothered by the fast pace and scant character introduction having no familiarity with Tolkien's work. I Was not keen on the director's fast edits during fight scenes (I make it akin to showing a dancer only from the waist up it just isn't the same as seeing the whole hog if you pardon the expression). So when the DVD was released I didn't think twice and didn't buy it. Then friend's of mine who did told me how marvelous they thought the film and so I began to wonder. When I heard that the extended edition was to be released I decided I would wait for it. It was well worth the wait. Much of my criticism seemed to wilt away with a re-edited edition restoring the film to its original concept. I am now awed by the technical and artistic vision brought to this work by a director and ensemble in fine form. Christopher Lee never looked so menacing, Ian McKellen so pensive and Liv Tyler so breathtakingly beautiful. Having now read the first two books of the trilogy I can avow that Jackson has done more that pay homage to Tolkien I believe he has excelled him as a storyteller. I can't think of higher praise than that.

Gen X-ers will love this movie

If you liked Heathers, Brazil, or Edward Scissorhands, you will love this movie. The entire cast is fantastic (except for Drew Barrymore, but we can forgive her since she executive produced the movie), the soundtrack is wonderful, the effects are beautiful for a movie that didn't cost much by Hollywood standards to make. This is a cult fave in the making.
I have found that 20-30 somethings love this movie; but people from our parents' generation do not get it, just as they don't get the other movies I listed above.
There are plot holes and other imperfections, but overall this movie is a revelation. Do yourself a favor and buy/rent it now!

Good silly fun

"The Emperor's New Groove," an animated musical, takes place in the pre-Columbian Americas. David Spade voices Kuzco, an Inca emperor who is transformed into a talking llama thanks to the scheming court sorceress, Yzma (Eartha Kitt) and her lumbering assistant (Patrick Warburton). In his quest to regain his humanity, Kuzco teams up with a loveable peasant (John Goodman).
After so many "serious" animated musicals with "politically correct" trappings ("Pocohontas," "Mulan," etc.), "Groove" is an irreverent, goofy breath of fresh air. Don't get me wrong--I loved those more earnest animated epics. But "Groove" is pure fun.
The film's humor is much enhanced by the excellent vocal performances. Spade does brilliant work as the sarcastic, self-absorbed Kuzco; his terrific vocal chemistry with Goodman makes this a delightful "buddy" film. The slapstick antics of the film are a fun throwback to classic "Bugs Bunny"/"Roadrunner"-style animated humor. And the witty dialogue well complements the wild visuals. Particularly fun are the scenes where Kuzco breaks out of the confines of the film and directly addresses the audience.
As silly as the film is, there is a gentle moral to the film (as exemplified by Kuzco's character arc). Overall, "Groove" is an entertaining film that should delight both adults and children.

it's THE best!!

The moves that Jet Li can do are the reason why I watch his videos. This one has an incredible upside down kick on the shoulder. Jet Li's array of styles are shown best here as well. He even does the chinese boxing style. (this movie is a remake of bruce lee's fist of fury). Except I think he's better than bruce lee. This guy can act really well too. Much better than american action films where the guy has to somehow be romantically be involved. This is pure action!! and yes, it does have issues of honor, and respect.

"You're killing me Smalls!"

This is one of my all time favorites. It is the perfect lazy Sunday afternoon...laying on the couch kinda movie. You don't have to love baseball to love this movie. Somewhat remenicent of the Wonder Years TV show. All the characters are so easy to relate too and it makes you yearn for the simple times of yesteryear. The writing and humor is priceless. If you haven't already seen this movie, rent it or buy it. Its a timeless movie that never gets old. I only wish they made more movies like this one....

If you like good animation, good voice acting and a wide variety of characters, this is the movie set for you. It may even shed a tear in your eye. When Goku changes into a different being, it made me go back into my library of Dragon Ball and Dragon Ball Z movies before it to admire what kind of person Goku was. Freiza better power up to 100% of his power Quickly!

Robocop 3 - movie DVD cover picture
The Best Science Fiction Cop Drama *EVER*

The finest film of the three and easily the best science fiction film of the past half-century, Robocop 3 is a film epic.

Few films are able to successfully combine the meta-ideas that haunt Mary Shelley's work and appropriately transform the tenets of Victorian horror to the screen. Robocop 3 accomplishes this masterfully, yet also manages to retain the subtleties of character not seen in a script since Hoffman's and Bancroft's work in "The Graduate".

The cinematic special effects wizardry are perhaps only dwarfed by the Oscar-worthy performances of this elite ensemble cast. In the hands of this clever and artful set of actors the amazingly rich script blossoms like Netherlands tulip fields. Richly woven into every scene are shades of texture and plot that Ridley Scott himself would do well to learn. Absorbing the carefully crafted plot is like imbibing the best of Hitchcock. The sci-fi cinemetography brings that of the Star Wars series to but a pale comparison. Opulant in its expression of new ideas, this film is nothing less than ground breaking.

This is a film that truly deals with man's struggle with himself and an increasingly impersonal, mechanized world -- yet it is capable of other scales too as these struggles are cast against a backdrop of social class turmoil *and* a rich commentary on the effects of globalization on local communities.

I imagine it would be hard for the team that created this to top themselves.
