Solid performance from the greatest of bands ...

Although I am not a 'wild nut' type of Stones fan I saw this concert at the Orange Bowl, in Miami, and Mick Jagger, Keith Richards, et. al. are THE consumate professional showmen giving the audience more than their money's worth performance. Even though Mick may be getting a little long in the tooth for rock concerts (aren't we all) and rumours have it that Keith Richards is really dead, you could see and feel that this band loves performing, and would put together a 5 hour show if they could.
The band shows up on time, (something very unusual now a days for rock star wanna be's) and rocks your socks from beginning to end, non-stop.
The DVD brought back memories of that performace and did not fall short in any respects. The video is crystal clear, sound is exact and sharp, and the editing absolutely fabulous. The director seemed to know where one would be looking during the concert and it made me feel as if I was back there again.... some of the editors of concert videos that I have seen had no clue as to where and when to focus attention during the concert .....
Although I would give 'Voodoo Lounge' concert DVD a slight edge, (I mean a very very slight edge) over Babylon, trust me, this is a must have DVD that will, like Voodoo, go out of print and you'll be buying the DVD for 50.00 bucks just to have it in your collection......

Been there Done That.....

I watched this video when I first bought a VHS player in 1987. It was on the recommendation of a friend and he did not steer me wrong. Manhunter is one of my favorite movies for many reasons... The compelling story, the cinamatography, (even the soundtrack... In-a-Gadda-Da-Vita, yeah baby! )...
Picture: A detective that uses visualization to get inside the killer's head and has gone mad in the past through this very same techinique; A FBI chief who will use anyone to get his man; A killer who "just wants to be loved" (is that so wrong? ) and slaughters entire families to fulfill this desire. (What happens when he meets the woman of his dreams?) Plus cameos of some of your favorite actors... Brian Cox as Hannibal "the Cannibal" Lector. Brian was awesome, especially for his portrayal as God.... "Why Will? Because God has power... He dropped a roof on 74 of his parishioners as they were grovelling through a hymn to his majesty". And never forget the fruits of the tabloid reporter.... "Crawford, Call my service, we'll do lunch..." The blue light for the moon, (night shots with Kim, cool tunes, beach scenes) Even a good plug to hire the handicapped. Rent it, Watch it, Own it... (A motto to live by....) Awesome movie!

Fred may have danced with other girls, and Ginger may have had other leading men, but together, there were no others. (despite what the plot suggests, we know they'll end up together) Ginger is absolutely gorgeous in every scene, and in the cheek to cheek scene, she looks like a porcelain doll. Fred of course is unbeatable, just watch top hat white tie and tails to see what I mean. They go beyond chemistry in this film, they are the greatest dancing team in history for a reason. We can't imagine them with anyone else. In KITTY FOYLE, for which Ginger won the oscar, she had to choose between 2 men. If Fred had popped in, she wouldn't have given it a second thought. In TOM DICK AND HARRY the following year, Gin has to choose between 3 men. Had Fred been one of the choices, the movie would have been and hour shorter. In TOP HAT, we can't imagine them in any other movies, for they are just ASTAIRE AND ROGERS, and to quote Shall we Dance "they can't that away from me."

A new Classic

If this film had not come out, everyone, and, I mena, EVERYONE, would be missing something. This film, based on the Stephen King bestseller, is Frank Darabont's best film along with THE SHAWSHANK REDEMPTION. Tom Hanks, Michael Clarke Duncan, Barry Pepper, James Cromwell, Bonnie Hunt, Gary Sinise, and many other fine and talented stars headline this masterpiece. At first, I thought this film would be a flop. But, thanks to word of mouth, the film grossed $136 Million domestically. I personally think it should have done better than that. This, along with SAVING PRIVATE RYAN, is Tom Hanks' best performance. The visual effects, although there aren't many, are dazzling. The relationships between the the actors is at times sad, and at times funny. The mix of comedy, drama, fantasy, and mouse hunting make it a film that certainly deserves to be on every movie fan's top ten list of all time best movies. For a three hour movie with no very exciting moments, it is really fast paced. The ending, although quite sad, is still a happy one. Everybody who loves GREAT movies should see this. Trust me, it will make your day. Bravo, Tom Hanks!

A GREAT HAUNTING MASTERPIECE

This is one of the most powerful films one will ever see, period. It is one of Herzog's best and the fact that everything in it is true is all the more inspiring and sad. I have never seen anything like this. It is not a normal documentary because it is relies on the poetry of images, dialogue and music in ways most fictional films can only inspire to. This is not a film to throw on while you putz around the house but one to watch and embrace with open arms. It intrigues, fascinates and if you open your heart just a little, it just may change your view of the world and those in it. Herzog has said that he wants to give the world new images to dream and think about. And in this film, a true story, he finds images of war and death and beauty and transcedence in the most passionate sense. A must see.

More than a concert DVD

Not being a fan of concert videos, I cannot compare "Back in the U.S." to other videos. All I know is that, for someone who was 14 years old when the Beatles arrived on the music scene, this DVD brought back some great memories.
Having been to a Beatles concert at D.C. Stadium in 1966, I have experienced the music in person. This DVD may not have the superb Dolby sound that other concert videos have, but it's still a great improvement over the sound of a live performance.
I enjoyed the audience shots. Had I been to the concert in person I would have spent all my time watching the stage. I know what Paul McCartney looks like so I don't need to watch every movement of his lips for every song in the three hour video. I enjoyed seeing the wide range of ages, emotions and interactions of those in the audience. This was more than a concert...it was a trip back through time, and this DVD captures the generational transcendance of Paul McCartney and the music with which he is associated.
I would recommend it for any Beatles fan. For those who discredit this video in comparison with those of other stars, we'll just wait to see if they're still packing the seats in 39 years....or perhaps the only thing they have going for them is a spiffy concert video.

Positively brilliant

"Boys Don't Cry" is the most phenomnial movie that I've ever seen.
I saw this movie in a tiny upstairs theater in Ashland, Oregon, and was thoroughly shaken and impressed when I walked out.
"Boys Don't Cry" is the story of a girl who is posing as a boy because that is what makes her the most comfortable with herself and with the way she wants to live. The story takes place in a small town where she (the character's name is Teena Brandon, played by Hilary Swank) meets and falls in love with a girl who lives there while posing as a male. It's based on a true story... and it's phenomnial. The budget for the movie was something like $2 million, which is SMALL for a current day film, and it was beautifully done.
The movie is just about the trials that Teena as Brandon goes through as guy... the people he interacts with, how he has to deal with things as a man...and how comfortable it is. It's also about love... The love of the girlfriend's family who "adopts" Brandon when they get together... the way Brandon and his new friends intereact... what Brandon does to get accepted... and the love between Brandon and his new girlfriend.
The movie is about relationships. It is about the love and friendship and all of the joys and sorrows that come with the choices that are made.
Unfortunatly, this movie has been tagged with a lot of sexuality and gender biases, which may very well keep some people from seeing it. In almost every review you read you will find terms like "Transgender", "Lesbian" or "Homosexuality". It's true, those issues do come up in this movie. But if you are capable of sitting in the theater and watching without outwardly sneering or being crude due to your homophobia, then I recommend seeing this movie.
I keep trying to put the experience of seeing this movie into words, and I find that I just can't. You need to see it for yourself. All I can say about it is that I saw it a week and a half ago, and it is almost all that I have thought about since. I honestly believe that this movie will change you and how you view the world. It certainly changed me.
Like I said before, this is the most phenominal film that I have ever seen. I highly recommend it.
