The Bestest Version of the Bestest Opera!

Kathleen Battle as Pamina? Sick! Pamina is "a fair blond maiden"... The only black character in the Opera was the villainous rapist, Monostatos who, in this twisted version, is played by none other than a white guy with black paint on his face.
Great music, sets, and singing but I think Mozart would be rolling over in his unmarked grave to see his Pamina played by a negroid who can't act to save her life.

Use Your Imagination People!

This is one of the best horror movies of all time. And also one of the scariest. The reason some people are saying it wasn't scary at all, is because these people can't use their imaginations! They need blood or knives or gore because they can't think for them selves. Well that's what makes this movie so good! It goes in a different direction then other horror flix and makes people use their Imaginations.

Blew me away...

Wow. The plot alone provides a more than compelling reason to watch this movie, but the acting of Norton and Furlong and the chemistry between them provides even more reason. I could not agree more with those who hail the plot as spectacular. It really chilled me, not just due to the hatred shown lurking in every corner, but because the fact that Norton's character got out of prison changed and alive was almost purely coincidence. So many "lucky" factors combined together to eliminate his views, and the fact that all these factors were needed is what scares me most. Most definitely not simply a liberal, left wing point of view.

TV can be this good?

I didn't see Freaks & Geeks when it ran on network television. In fact, I don't remember even hearing about it. (Talk about terrible promotion!) I bought this series on DVD because some former Mystery Science Theater 3000 cast members were involved with it.

What an incredibly lucky find! My fianc?e and I watched all 18 episodes within a week.

This is simply great television production. The writing is spectacular; there are no throw-away lines, no worn-out situations, and thankfully, no quick fixes. The writers rarely take the easy way out. (The soundtrack is also top-notch.)

This series also has the perfect balance of comedy and drama. It's not screwball, and it's not melodramatic. It's a pretty realistic look into the lives and social challenges of high school students who don't quite fit in with the popular crowd.

But the most impressive aspect of Freaks & Geeks was the casting. Just amazing. Every young actor on this series was perfectly cast. Each character was likeable, interesting, and sometimes painfully familiar.

This was just an amazing and entertaining series. It's a shame it was so short-lived. I can't imagine anyone not being hooked after the first few episodes. This is a great example of how good television can be. Well, before reality TV made actors and writers obsolete, anyway.

A brilliantly hilarious acquired taste.

I avoided Napoleon Dynamite in theatres, put off by reviews such as Roger Ebert's. When I finally did give it audience, it was in some hotel suite in LA, a soft robe, a few chuckles, then room service came, my girl came out of the shower, Napoleon went off, and I made a hazy mental note to give it a fair shot at some point.

So, to speed things up a bit...the second time I thought it was very funny, the third time, funnier (and I don't mean just in retrospect, I laughed harder, and enjoyed it more).

I've seen Napoleon like 20 times...eeezy! It's going down in my regime of cult films with the likes of Office Space. And, much like Office Space, it's no epic; there aren't any deep moral lessons to be had, any detailed historical accounting that will firm up your academic understanding of our place in the world. Nope, just a concentrated dose of nostalgic hilarity. Not in the sense that I wish I could be in High School again, or back in the 80's (a period that this film spoofs heavily), but more in the sense that it reminds you of simpler times and simpler concerns. Nerd or not, most every reader cared deeply about the opinions of others then, about who they'd take to the dance, about whether they'd have to do "all" their chores (like feeding ham to their pet llama Tina). I think if this movie - which is so oft accused of being devoid of plot - were to be forced to offer up some kind of lesson, or value, it should be just that: it helps take our constellation of todays problems a bit less seriously by reminding us of how trivial yesterdays problems were.

Plus it's got some sweet scenes!

I'm sorry, but even if some disagree with my premise regarding this films value, how could anyone not find this movie flippin hilarious. Napoleon Dynamite is NOT slapstick, it's infinitely less obvious. That fact makes it harder for most to find the film immediately hilarious, but after a viewing or two, when your brain has ample time to digest the enormous volume of absurdity and texture, I think a good number of those who panned this film would be turned around. This movie is an amalgamation of the High School experience, consolidated into various archetypes, then amplified to an extreme.

Flippin awesome!

If you don't agree with me, you should eat a decroded piece of crap!

Enjoy,

BTW: Anyone who wants a Time Machine so they can go back to '82 should consult with me personally. It's eeeeasy, I've already looked into for myself.

Great Movie!

This movie is great, in my opinion any River Phoenix movie is great. And if you are a tru fan of River Phoenix than any movie with him is worth seeing and as for wasting his talents... he wasted his talent just being in this world with us no one could ever completely understand how deep his talents were. River will alwayz be loved and missed. Now if you are truly a River fan then I defintly recommend this movie to you.

A True Must-See Movie

This is probably my very favorite movie. And if you've read any of my other reviews, you're saying, "Oh, yeah, cuz she's obsessed with Simon and Garfunkel." Well, I must admit that I first saw it for the outstanding soundtrack (which really is reason enough), but the movie itself exceeded all my exprectations. It's perfect: unconventional, darkly funny, honest, odd, with the perfect music and about a million lines that are regularly quoted at my home. ("No, it's completely baked.") Darn it, you could even say it's touching. But not in a smushy-mushy sort of way. Anyway, there's really no need to go over the plot here, you probably know it: Grad student Benjamin gets sucked into Mrs. Robinson's web of sin, regrets it, falls for the daughter, gets everyone pissed off at him, but persists and--oh no I wo'nt ruin the ending. But it's awesome, the best movie ending ever. Does this sound like a dumb romantic comedy? Well it's not, and I can assure you I LoAtHe romantic comedies. The dark look at the relation between youth and age, innocence and world-weariness, right and wrong and love and lust (and all these elements fit together perfectly) prevents it from falling into this category of mush. Its other saving grace is the constant undercurrent of humor, in Dustin Hoffman's magnificent deadpan and the personalities of the minor characters. The element of humor is indescribable, being somewhat unconventional, but in the end is probably the funniest (and saddest even) movie I have ever seen. I must, I fear, discuss the music for a moment. The S&G soundtrack is so distinctive, as the only songs in the movie are by them and each song is used several times. However, this never gets tedious, just helps to reveal hidden truths in the characters and their emotions. It's a beautiful juxtaposition. The music really embodies the movie, and especially "The Sound of Silence" and "Mrs. Robinson." "Sound" is an utterly dark and tragic song, lamenting the lack of true and honest human contact that becomes a major theme in the movie. "Mrs. Robinson" is a slightly odd, humorous song, but with an undercurrent of reality in thinking about the loss of youth. And so everything in this movie adds up. It's entertaning, somewhat groundbreaking for its time, moving, balanced, serious and at the same time absolutely hilarious. It's so original, and the perfect performances of Hoffman and Bancroft really carry the whole film. This is really a movie for anyone; despite the subject matter it's not really to risque (but if you want risqu-osity it IS there), and any film lover will adore it. Buy it, watch it again, have a blast from the past or see for the first time one of the greatest movies ever! Show the kids! (Well, maybe later...) Just as an afterthought: it just struck me that for some reason this movie in particular seems like it would make a really good gift...or maybe that's just because I covet it...hahaha. No I'm not really trying to sell it, but around this time of year it seems pertinant...

All smiles!!

As this was my first Coen Brothers film, I really had no idea what to expect when I first saw this film. I just recalled from the theater trailers that it looked funny and thought it deserved a chance. To say I was pleasantly surprised would be an understatement. I can't recall the last time I had so much fun watching a movie. The humor, the acting, the music - it all blended together to deliver a truly wonderful experience. This one is a keeper!!
