Scariest film of the 80's

Wes Craven is truly one of the horror masters, as is illustrated by this digitally remastered classic. The colors and shadows are so fresh it looks like Scream 3. The commentary by Wes, Heather, John, and the cinematographer is insightful; although you sometimes wonder if John Saxon is still in the room because he says 2-3 things throughout the film. All in all, this is a good addition to any respectable DVD horror collection.

An entertaining movie

Before Neve Campbell blew up with the "Scream" trilogy, Neve was in the modest hit "The Craft". It is my favorite modern teen flick movies. Robin Tunney plays the protaganist Sarah Bailey. She moves to California with her father and stepmother. She enrolls in a Catholic high school where she meets up with trouble in the form of Skeet Ulrich, Fairuka Balk, Neve Campbell and Rachel True. Everything starts out swimmingly with Skeet, Fairuka, Neve, and Rachel's characters Chris, Nancy, Bonnie, and Rochelle but it quickly takes a downturn when Sarah, Nancy, Bonnie, and Rochelle get way over their heads into witchcraft. Sure the portrayal of wicca is unrealistic but this is a movie, not a documentary. Each of the girls make a wish to menlo who is supposedly to be a power bigger than God. Well the girls gets their wishes. Unfortunately the wishes turns out to be more than what the girls bargained for. Eventually the four really gets in over their heads when they decided to invoke menlo. All heck breaks loose when Sarah realizes what started out as just having fun casting harmless spells has turned into something darker and more insidious with her three friends who are now corrupt with power. The movie may not be perfect with the over the top special effects and writing in general but I still love watching this movie. I do think it is one of those films that translated better in the theater than on dvd/video.

Waco - The Rules of Engagement - movie DVD cover picture
Very disturbing, but a Must-see

See this documentary, then ask yourself this question. Do you really think it is smart or safe to disarm the American people and give the government a monopoly on force? The 2nd amendment was created specifically to protect us from this kind of tyrany, and it has worked for over 200 years. The arrogance and ignorance of Senators Lantos, Schumer, Biden, Taylor, and others is disgusting! How could any investigation conducted by people of such low caliber possibly be fair and just? Only Amnesty International can possible conduct the required investigation. Watch it again, then tell me disarming the law abiding public is "an idea whose time has come." --the words from the same Senator Biden who arrogantly abdicated his responsiblity during the Waco investigation.

I Just Returned From Voyage Around Cape Horn

A lot of this movie was shot around Cape Horn. The seas were exactly what my ship went through for five hours. I saw Crowe on Letterman and was amazed at all the research and books he had to read to prepare. A brilliant film which should win best director. I'm into nautical movies and this one is the best yet!!

Metropolis (Restored Authorized Edition) - movie DVD cover picture
Beautiful transfer of Lang's classic

Kino's transfer of "Metropolis" is absolutely gorgeous. Aside from a few scenes here and there (together with the caveat that entire sections of the film have been lost forever), the images are pristine. Sure, choosing to include the original German intertitles would have made for a nice feature, but their absence is more than compensated by the success of the restoration.

As for the film itself, "Metropolis" absolutely deserves to be watched. "Metropolis" is my least favorite of the Lang films I've seen -- and yet its brilliance makes it an important addition to the collection of any serious film buff. Its photography is beautiful, its actors are convincing, its sets are ornate, and its story is interesting -- particularly viewed within the proper historical context. The message behind "Metropolis" is decidedly social democratic / democratic socialist: the slave-workers are forced to toil beneath a nightmarish urban landscape to preserve the luxiorous existence of the opulent few who live in a utopic garden-community in the sky, utterly shielded from the misery their existence inflicts on others. Obviously, an indictment of capitalism, at least as it existed in the industrialized world (e.g., Germany) in the early part of the twentieth century. Along comes Maria, a beautiful peasant woman who inspires the workers with hope by arguing for nonviolent resistance and reconciliation with the capitalist class, and that a mediator is needed to bridge the divide. That mediator turns out to be young Freder, son of capitalist Fredersen, who sympathizes with the plight of the slave-workers and quickly falls in love with Maria. To subvert the nascent labor movement, Freder's father, who learns of the plan, convinces a talented inventor to create a Maria-like android, who incites the workers to violence -- providing the capitalists with a pretext for crushing the workers through force. Clearly, Lang is suggesting that advocates of anti-capitalist violence (e.g., the Communists) serve the interests of the capitalists.

Why is this expressionistic masterpiece my least favorite Lang film? The reasons are hard to pinpoint, but "Metropolis" has a vague "Hollywood"-feel, which I regard as unfortunate. More importantly, the ending is overly sentimental. If a person could own only one Lang film, "M" or "Dr. Mabuse: The Gambler" would certainly be the better choice. But who would want to live in a world that prohibited people from owning more than one of Lang's films?

A Damn Good Film!

I recently saw this film again after several years and I enjoyed as much as I had done when I first saw it when in was released onto video at the end of the 1980s. The Seventh Sign was not your run of the mill horror film. What it lacked in blood, guts and gore, it made up for other ways. The acting was excellent; Demi Moore was brilliant as the pregnant young woman about to give birth to the first soulless child who will herald the end of the world. Jurgen Prochnow in turn was superb as God's witness on earth and even Michael Biehn gave credence to his supporting role as Demi's disbelieving husband. Many Jacobs who plays the young Jewish boy Avi also deserves a mention, all in all the entire cast were brilliant. This is a much under-rated film as it is intriguing, atmospheric, and well put together. If you get the chance to rent, buy or borrow this film, then do so, it is well worth it and you won't be disappointed.

a small budgeted tense, taut thriller of a movie!

as i stated in my comments re: the chronicles of riddick dvd, i've viewed it now 8 times since i purchased it on wednesday morning, but i was confused lots about riddick himself! pitch black answered my questions and cleared up my confusion within the first 20 minutes! this is a tense, taut thriller/horror flick of the highest caliber, with some really superb action, special alien effects, great and imaginative cinematography (though on a much smaller budget) than the chronicles of riddick! pitch black is awesome-the unrated directors cut in widescreen and great dts sound is a marvel-i really enjoyed it! but, the new chronicles of riddick, also unrated director's cut widescreen, is ultimately the better overall, of the two fine films! vin diesel is a marvel in both, with really fine support from 2 excellent casts. get them both for a full riddick experience-this really is the way that "star wars episodes 1 & 2 really should have been. as it is, both films should be in everyone's dvd collections, if they are really sci-fi fans especially! now, i cannot wait for the next chapter in what is surely cult classic status.
