Ruthless... Savage... Spectacular

Ahhh, the classic post-apocolyptic thriller that sets the standard for post-apocolyptic thrillers. One tagline reads 'In the future, cities will become deserts, roads will become battlefields and the hope of mankind will appear as a stranger'. I remember skipping school in the early 80's to stay home and watch this one on cable, Such a great movie that has lost none of it's appeal even after 20 plus years. This is the story of a man, once an officer of the law, who now roams the highways of post-apocolyptic Australia searching for gasoline and maybe a reason to exist. In this time, gasoline is the most valuable commodity, so much so men kill for it. Mel Gibson plays Max, in the role that made him known worldwide. During his travels, he comes across a small settlement that is actually producing petroleum. This settlement is besieged by a group of motorized, murdering, mauraders who want all the fuel. Knowing that the fuel is life, the people in the settlement defend the fuel, but their strength and ability to hold out against this powerful force is becoming less and less each day. Max strikes a deal with them for all the fuel he can carry provided he can get a truck for them so they can haul their tanker of gas out of the wasteland and find a better life in a fabled coastal land. Max fufills his end of the bargin, and leaves the settlement with his fuel, but is attacked and left for dead. Having lost his car, he decides to drive the tanker. This sets up one of the most amazing highway battles ever filmed, as the settlers have turned the tanker into a moving fortess, and the marauders will stop at nothing to stop the tanker and get the gas. This movie is what I would call a nearly pefect example of excellent casting, story, dialogue, plot, script, wardrobe, etc. to make up a near perfect movie. Everything in the movie works so well that your entire attention is focused on the screen, even after multiple viewings. This is actually the second in a trilogy, Mad Max being the first and Mad Max Beyond Thunderdome being the third, but, in my opinion, this one is the best. It's raw, gritty, sometimes humourous and competely enthralling. On a side note, what's up with Warner Brothers and their crummy cardboard packaging? It just seems so flimsy and cheap. And don't look for a lot of extras with this release, just the full and widescreen versions and some production notes.
This just in...I heard George Miller and Mel Gibson are bringing Max back one more time in 2004 in Mad Max: Fury Road......

Poor Brits

I'm glad to see that this film is still getting a lot of attention. So many of the noteworthy movies of the 70's (a great era for American cinema) have fallen by the cultural wayside. This is Kubrick's masterful interpretation of Burgess' controversial, difficult brainchild. Burgess envisioned a polyglot, dystopian future, an amalgam of Huxley, Golding, Orwell and Mad Max. Kubrick took the raw bones of the narrative and fashioned an entirely self-contained work of art. I couldn't get over, when first viewing this film on a wide screed, upon its initial release, the incredible clarity and crispness of the print. It was like seeing an entirely new kind of movie. There was a bright, distinct aura to it, unlike anything I've seen before or since. It has to be one of the most carefully controlled and executed pieces of filmmaking ever executed. Every frame, every bit of business, every prop, every line, is perfectly realized. I to this day can't comprehend the kind of artistic rigor and planning that went into creating this masterwork. There isn't a wasted shot or a throwaway line in the entire film. It is perfectly sequential. It is the essence of intelligence in combination with artistry.
Many reviewers have commented on Malcom McDowell's uncanny performance and I would agree that he is brilliant as are all cast members. I would beg to differ that this was his debut, however. If I am not mistaken, he had already starred in Lindsay Anderson's potent portrait of youthful rebellion, "If." I notice, as an aside, that "If" is not listed on Amazon and I wonder if that has anything to do with Littleton and other recent school tragedies. The subject matter of that film has to do with a group of students who go on a shooting rampage in an English public (US private) school.
I would love to see Clockwork Orange on a large screen again. Kubrick was one of the true geniuses of American and British cinema and his talents are already sorely missed. He did pretty well for a kid from Brooklyn.

WOW !

Think about the best movie you ever saw. What made it your favourite? Was it the acting, the plot, the direction?
The best movies I've seen had all of these, but they done something else, more importantly, they touched me.American Beauty is one of these greats. It has depth, it made me think, question, and maybe appreciate life a little more. It's not a movie that spoke to everyone though, and that's fair enough. But hopefully, like Lester, everything fell into place, and for just a few seconds you realised how amazing life, and this movie, really is.

Great for Kids 7-12

This is great for kids 7-12. Heck, it is great for us adults, too! Plenty of action that is just a little violent, but clean language and generally good-guy-bad-guy is easy to spot. The creations of Floop are great and Floop's transition to a good guy is really great for developing minds. Have your kids watch it ... and you watch it, too!

Risky movie pays off

Three Kings tried something fresh and different last year (and was voted on over 100 critics' top ten lists). It didn't receive any from the "Academy," but don't pass it up. It's a war film, an action film, a comedy, and a drama... and it actually plays off well. The DVD edition is AMAZING... I'm telling you. It has more extras and goodies than I've seen on any DVD before. Well worth the money.

Cool martial arts yeah!!!

this movie captured me due to the rythmic use of music, the fight scenes were fantastic as allot of martial arts background is used along with the history of the fighting form. the storyline shows a bunch of no hoppers studying the martial arts form with the guidence of a ex-pupil of that school.along with the storyline, the music and fighting scenes, be sure that "only the strong" will make you want to view it again and again.

Outstanding...

Fans of Jon Lord will treasure this DVD. He steals the show with his considerable keyboard talents and his enthusiasm. This chap obviously loves his job. The performance level is fabulous, as is the sound quality of this disk. Ian Paice han't lost his chops, and pulls of an impressive drum solo. Blackmore is crisp and intense in his playing...he makes every note count. There is no doubt in my mind that he is one of the greatest (underrated) guitar players around. Unfortunately, his sullen demeanour is apparent from the opening tune (Highway Star). Not only does he choose to delay his entrance (till part way through the song), he throws a temper tantrum right off the bat. Unfortunate. The rest of the band members do not soft peddle their feelings towards Blackmore, expressed in insightful comments between the tunes.
The weak link here is the obvious toll that time has taken on Ian Gillan's voice. One of the most distinctive and powerful voices in Rock music has lost much of that power and range. There are moments where his pitch is off as well.
However, the band is tight...their musicianship and improvisation is better than I have ever heard (I am a long time Purple fan), and the selection of tunes is great. The sound and picture quality are excellent.
A "must buy" for Purple fans.

this show shows off the amazing acting techniques of mary-kay and annie. There characters are riviting and real, and the writing is funny. The parents are losers, but the nanny should win an EMMY! He's great! These episodes are so fun, and you'll watch them over and over again.

Prince's best work!!

Just bought this on DVD (20th Anniversary), & had not seen it since 1986, after 18 years, this film, to my suprise still captivated me, it may scream 80's as far as fashion goes, but the story still holds up well, In this Prince is a struggling musician trying to make it big in a club, & his homelife is not all that great, his music is really his only escape from his turbulent life, Prince did what no other artist has been able to do, & that is bring drama not only to his music but to his acting as well here, like his female counterpart Madonna, Prince is a self-marketing genius & writer & promoter, & like Madonna, uses the media to his advantage, & like Madonna is very intelligent in interviews, Morris Day adds comic relief here as Prince's rival, & Apollonia is stunning to look at, her & Prince's chemistry really clicks well here, MTV marketed the hell out of this in the summer of 1984, & one can see why, this film revolutionized the music video, videos became more flashy & have been ever since, Prince definately paved the way for today's R&B artists, the bonus disc is nice with a historic look back, although Prince is nowhere to be found in the extras, it is not surprising given his artistic battles with Warner Bros. years ago, & how he fought with them over ownership of his music & that they finally released him from his contract but refuses to give him sole rights to his music, Madonna was also with Warner Bros. & just recently had a similar experience, despite Prince's ongoing battle with WB, they have definately polished his film as best they could, & if you want this movie, skip the first release & get the 20th Anniversary Edition, & yes, mine had no booklet either, studios are getting cheap, this is not the only one without a inside cover!!
