Rocky is at it again!

Up to this fourth installment of the Rocky series, it seems that Rocky Balboa (Sylvester Stallone) has already done it all and has gotten his vengeance and glory in all sorts of manners. However, after his formal rival and now friend Apollo Creed (Carl Weathers) gets killed fighting a huge Russian boxer named Drago (Dolph Lundgren), Rocky is at it again with the vengeance and revenge to fight Drago for killing his friend, Apollo Creed.
"Rocky IV" is just as exciting and just as action packed as any of the other Rocky movies. Once again, Sylvester Stallone did a great job of directing and acting in "Rocky IV." The movie's music and Rocky's spirit is inspirational and even up to this day, remains one of the great movies of the 80s, and one of the best of its kind period. If you like great action movies and especially if you liked the other Rocky movies, I recommend getting "Rocky IV."

Wonderful and weird.

This is such a great, great, great film. It succeeds on so many levels and this new directors cut is the best presentation of this film yet. Many scenes are restored to the film that I think add nicely to the build up and some have been removed that add to the mystery at the end, such as not showing us the inside of the ship from Richard Dreyfuss's perspective. Also the use of Devils Tower, a black monolith combined with the eerie choral overture is a Spielberg homage to Kubrick's 2001. It is interesting to note that the government organization that is researching the aliens use the illuminati pyramid as their symbol indicating to the audience the secret society connections, they even have their own flag. Also I believe that Spielberg is clearly pointing out to us by the way the aliens arrive in clouds and thunder with flashing lights that they may very well be the God of the bible. Them choosing a mountain to appear for communication, descending upon it in cloud and thunder is right out of the old testament. Also the smaller ships have a definite face or animal like appearance and remind one of the visions of the bible prophets and from a distance can appear like stars in the sky when they mimic the big dipper which could also explain the ancient worlds fascination with the stars. But to remove all doubt Spielberg holds a church blessing on the team that will be going back with the aliens, as the minister gives the blessing he reads from a passage of the bible talking about angels lifting us up and in the background is a Christian cross side by side with the star of David. A deeper film than many believe and overall a beautiful DVD transfer with incredible sound.

The Brothers - movie DVD cover picture

This movie is about true friendship triumphing over a number of impositions. The friendship first between the four main characters, the brothers get over their own self pride, to realise that friendship is support, not just giving your own opinion. Morris Chestnut who plays his role extremely well is just an average man with the fears every man has, he is afraid to commit to any woman, or when he does it always seems to turn bad for him because he just doesnt give it his all. Until the ever so talented and beautiful Gabrielle Union(Denise), comes into his life. He makes it obvious that he is not interested in a relationship. This doesnt last long as sex drags its arse into it, to find out the rest u would have to watch it, you will not be disappointed, this movie is definetly for everyone. 5 thumbs up. Enjoy.

A Beautiful Film

On the surface the movie is about an immigrant family dealing with life in America. But if we look closer which is not a hard task since it is pretty obvious that the movie's heart and soul is how the family cope (for some failure or refusal to cope) with loss and acceptance while living in a foreign land.

After seeing the movie I realized that the use of a child's point of view in telling a story is very effective in stories that are potentially "sappy". The movie was never melodramatic, it's heartwarming and deeply moving, besides the wonderful and perceptive script of the Sheridans, I think the use of the narration and the insights of the little girl was a key factor to that.

So many memorable scenes. One that quickly comes to mind is the scene with the ET stuffed toy prize in some sort of a game. At first it's just about a $30 toy, but in the end it became so much more about that. It was heartbreaking. Another notable scene was the "Desperado" school number of Christy (the narrator), for someone so young it's hard to believe she sang it with such depth and heart. And the ending was beautiful! It is a poignant closure to characters that are in desperate need of one. After the ending you just know they'll be a much happier and peaceful family.

Can't believe how I am enjoying this

I have the first two seasons of the original DVD on DVD and they are both excellent. The copies are crisp, the features are fun, etc. What makes them so great is the show itself, though. Dick Van Dyke, Carl Reiner and Mary Tyler Moore should get credit for creating the sitcom because even if they weren't the first, they were (and still are) the best.
I can't wait for the sets for seasons 3-5.
Now, if only someone would release full seasons of "The Andy Griffith Show", the two best shows ever would be available!

Good old cockney fun !

Guy Ritchie has come up with another winner. This film has a stronger story line than Lock Stock and 2 smoking barrels but the film is not Part 2. It is a story in it's own right. This gives a good view on life in the East End of London. The array of different people from various walks of life is what makes this film stand out. Brad Pitt is brillant as the Irish streetfighter Mickey. With so many twists to the story you'll need to follow the story closely. The language is strong but without it would have made the story unrealistic . This is East End, London and the big boys have come out to play, even the amercians fly over to join in !. Sit back and enjoy another Guy Richie classic.

Lost In Translation (Widescreen Edition) - movie DVD cover picture
Lost in Translation - Mise en Place

Lost in Translation, Sofia Coppola's latest work, is without question one of the finer films of the year. The stylistic transition from her last feature, The Virgin Suicides, to Lost in Translation is not exactly obvious, but nonetheless shows Coppola directing a more mature-natured picture than she previously has. Lost in Translation's subtleties are its greatest achievements, while the actor's performances are the impressive allies to a compelling story of love, life, chemistry, and respect. If at least one Oscar is not garnered from this combination of elements, I will find myself sadly disappointed.
The movie begins with Bob Harris (Bill Murray) arriving in Tokyo, Japan to shoot a commercial for a Japanese-brand whisky. Upon arriving in the country, it's immediately obvious that he is not completely up for this task. He arrives at a beautiful hotel where he is lavishly welcomed by the hotel's staff before retreating to his room to alienate himself from the experience. Charlotte, played by Scarlett Johansson, is also at the hotel. She is staying with her photographer husband while his is in the country for work.
The next evening, Charlotte sees Bob having a less than fulfilling time in the hotel's lounge and sends him a drink. Later that evening, they meet again in the lounge when both are unable to sleep. An instant bond is established and the two slowly begin to realize that they are the best suited company for one another.
Eventually Bob and Charlotte go out together on the town. In the midst of being in a completely different culture, where more than the language is a barrier, the two find themselves meeting on a much deeper level than they had originally planned. The fact that the age difference is obvious to the audience makes some of the subsequent scenes more intense. You're left to question if the two are going to take the relationship to a sexual level. You're left to question if the two are truly falling in love. You're left to question if the age really has any bearing on the chemistry that they feel together.
Therein lays the true beauty of this film. Although it would be extremely easy to have these two romantically fall in love, they're simply two people that meet on an emotional level. For lack of better words, they just understand each other. For the next couple of days they utilize their time to the fullest by enjoying their time together. They don't want the time to end, but realize that in just a few short days everything in their lives will go back to normal.
During the last evening of the trip, a fire alarm is sounded in the hotel forcing everyone outside until all is clear. At this point, Bob sees Charlotte and approaches her. The moment is uncomfortable because, through no intention of his own, Charlotte becomes aware of the fact that Bob has unexpectedly had another woman in his room the night before. Unable to deny the fact that she has become emotionally attached, Charlotte asks Bob when he is going home. He replies, "In the morning." At this point, it's in the open and the two realize just exactly how much fun they've had together over the course of their visit to Japan. This is a friendship that could very easily be taken to the next level, but somehow the two are smart enough to understand that this is something that just needs remain where it's at.
After leaving the hotel to catch his plane home, Bob sees Charlotte walking down the streets of Tokyo and implores the driver to pull over so he can say what he wanted to say earlier. Unfortunately, and fortunately, we are unable to hear what he tells Charlotte. We're only left to speculate what it is. I'm sure most people agree that it can only be one or two things. It's such a beautiful scene, though. It's one of the true highlights of cinema in the past several years.
Everything about Lost in Translation is in the right place. As I stated before, it's the subtleties that make it so great. Whether it's the witty humor of Murray, the innocence of Johansson, the brief appearances of the small handful of cast members, or the beautiful imagery of Tokyo, nothing has been overdone.
Finally, as I left the theatre, I realized just exactly how much my emotions had been played with. However, it wasn't until the second time I saw this film that I fully understood why. On some level I guess I had wanted things to turn out differently, but maturity of the writing actually made this movie ten times more enjoyable than it would have been had it ended the way I wanted it to the first time.
