Ridley Scott's Gladiator

Gladiator is one of the rare films I could watch over and over. It's definitely one of the greatest films I've ever seen. Russell Crowe is captivating. The acting was excellent, the scenes were superb, and the history of the times enlightening. The story was compelling. The action as well as the dynamics of the characters were beautifully combined to make this a classic. I enjoyed everything about this movie.

I love Charlie's Angels

Charlie's Angels is by far my favorite show. I even like the Shelley Hack and Tanya Roberts episodes. This DVD is wonderful, some much fun to see all this episodes again. I just love Cheryl Ladd. She is one of my favorite angels. I just wish they would have Angels in Paradise and Angels on Ice not broken up into two episodes but would have put them on the DVD as the original 2-hour shows there were. Still a lot fun. Most of my favorite shows are from the 70's and early 80's. Great fun. Let's hope season 3, 4, and 5 will also be released. I'm also a big Shelley Hack fan.

Read the booklet you moaners!

First of all for those that are moaning about there being songs missing from the dvd...can you read??? It is all explained in the booklet. It's not like this has being marketed as "The Complete Live Aid". Secondly..watch the prequel with the news report about the famine in Ethiopia and just thank god that some missing footage is all you have to moan about.
This is a great set featuring great performances. Queen and U2 stand out for me. It's like a time capsule from 1985 has been discovered!
I thought it was very reasonably priced for a 4 DVD set so anyone accusing this of being a quick cash in is being ridiculous...the profits go to the Live Aid Trust for heavens sake! I for one would be glad if in a few years they find more footage and put this out in an extended version....I'd buy that too. This will do nicely for now. All you moaners can hold on to your crappy bootleg videos.

Lucky Lucy

I've not been one of Joan Sutherland's greatest fans, though I do enjoy the voice very much. Often, she sounds dramatically uninvolved and, as my friend remarks, always sounds like she was about to sneeze. Ok, enough of that. She is awesome here. Yes, she may not be able to measure up to her recordings of the work, but she has found a new sense of drama, a fire within the music. I much prefer Sills in this role, who really tore up the stage (or microphone, on her cd). However, Sutherland does have quite a presence and I am utterly astonished when I hear her pluck an effortless high D at the end of the sextet. Oh my god! What I would give to have a high note like that AT ANY AGE!!!!Here she is in her mid to late fifties doing these things. She's quite good, as is Plishka and Elvira. I've never been a huge fan of Alfredo Kraus but, with microphone distancing, he doesn't bother me nearly as much as in his studio recordings. Overall, I think it's a wonderful time at the opera. Now, for an even more incredible account, pick up Beverly Sills' version that was just released. WOW!

Unbelievable - provided you watch it subbed, not dubbed

Good grief, where to begin...
This is to date the only love story I really like. It seems to me in a time when mawkish sentimentality a la 'Titanic' *spits at having to mention it in the same breth as AS' is the norm, the only real emotion is found in somewhat twisted relationships. That said, there's no 'somewhat' about this relationship. Setsuna - reincarnation of the Organic Angel Alexiel who rebels against God - is deeply in love with Sarah, who happens to share this love. The problem? In addition to this, they are brother and sister. Essentially, this proves Thomas Aquinas's point that incest makes family relations even more helishly complicated than they already are. Furthermore, this is not for you if you hold strong religious convictions, for it depicts angels who are so far round the twist that you could use them as corkscrews, as well as manifesting many human failings such as lust, anger, jealousy etc. etc. Although if you're going to throw something out on those grounds, there goes _Paradise Lost_, too. Essentially, I consider this second only to Ghost in the Shell in quality. But I will say one thing: The dubbing is terrible. I'm sorry, but Kurai's voice just sounds so wrong. Watch it subbed. The only voice hit dead on was Rosiel's.

John Carpenter is my favorite director and H.P. Lovecraft is my favorite author. So, to me, this movie is bliss. A deeply frightening story that does it's worst scaring long after you've seen it. Watch it, and you will understand.

The Start of the Greatest Story Ever Told!

This is the TV show that changed all tv show's in the Same genre. Before B5, Science fiction just moved from episode to episode, telling a new story every week. Well now every scifi/fantasy show builds its story on seasonal of series long story arc. And so it begins. Babylon 5 started out being very subversive. The creator, Joe Michael Straczynski was being watched very closely by the network so he could not do everything that he wanted to do. So how did he build his story? He did so by planting seeds in each episode that woulod sprout one, two , three even four years later. By watching the story unfold, it makes season one that much better. Season one is probibly the least best of the Five, but it is still better than any sci-fi season of any show ever made. The characters are still undeveloped. And let me explain that, The characters were not fully revealed so you did not know who was good or bad, in fact they did not know if they were good or bad. They had to be thrust into incredible scenarios to find out how they would react in a certain situation to find out what type of person they were. It is brilliant. And the scenarios that they were put into are incredible. The author really does a great job of leading you down one path only to find out that you are more lost, disturbed and manipulated than you ever imagined. And the writer is an author. He put the outline of a book together in 1987 and instead of trying to write it as a paper novel, he turned it into a tv novel. I believe he wrote about 90 of the 110 episodes made. that is over a thousand pages a year. Most people don't read that much. Eacvh episode is a new chapter driving the story and charaters deeper into a pit of despare and intregue that allows us to ask various questions on human nature. It is mythology, psycology, sociology, science fiction, politics, philosophy and allegory all in one. No author has ever built a more intense story and put all of his characters through such hell. Where do they end up? Well you will have to watch it to find out but if you decide not to, then you are missing the greatest peice of art that the TV has ever displayed. I recommened it for anyone who likes to think about things that matter, religeon, life, justice, crime, punishment, chaos, order, how to let go and how to move on. It is all there. It has always been there!

Michael O'Hare
