Resevoir Dogs : a fascinatingly unique and intense film

There are not very many films made now-a-days that can capture the emotional intensity that Quenton Tarintino's "Resevoir Dogs" does. This is a sheer treat to watch: the first-class cast (Harvey Kietel, Tim Roth, Michael Madsen, Steve Buscemi, Chris Penn, to name a few); mind numbing plot twists; and intriquit and unique camera angles that even Hitchcock would be proud of. "Resevoir Dogs" tells the intense story of a master criminal who assembles a group of 'professional' crooks to pull off the perfect jewel hiest. The jewel hiest goes terrible awry and the thugs spend most of the movie in an abandoned werehouse, where they discover that one of them is an undercover cop. Not sure which one, they banter and re-cover their tracks, leading to a climatic, even poetic, final scene.

As hip as they come

Bert Stern has both an eye and an ear for jazz, par excellence, capturing the spirit of the Newport Jazz festival in its heyday. This is a wonderful showcase of performances, ranging from the detached Thelonius Monk to the super cool Anita O'Day. But, without doubt, the performance that stands out is that of Mahalia Jackson who brings the crowd to their feet with "40 Days" and then brings them to their knees with her closing psalm, so passionately felt.
The movie takes you through a figurative day, capturing the sea air of Newport, the quiet practice sessions, the ebb and flow of the crowd as it grows to its evening peak, with a rocking performance by Chuck Berry. The Satchmo takes a wonderful turn at the mike with Jack Teargarden joining him in a fun duet. Chico Hamilton is there in all his seriousness with Eric Dolphy highlighting the band's performance. George Shearer looks like he could be playing at the Hollywood Bowl.
I was hoping for more extras on the DVD. The movie leaves you craving for more music. The 50's were the peak of the hip jazz scene and this movie is as hip as they come.

Who's the bright boy?

I remember at 13 years being struck with wonder at the power of the dialogue in Hemingway's The Killers and if I recall correctly walked around the streets talking to myself, shoulders slouched, " You...bright boy. You pretty bright eh? " etc In this doubled whammy of Criterion edition it's Don Siegel's which has little to do with Hemingway which has the visceral power and Siodmark's which has much art and mood which has little of the power. Both however, are terrific movies. For film buffs it's a treat. With Siegel's the trashy sets, the truly brilliant acting of Mr Marvin, and Mr Gulager and Mr Cassavetes, go together to make a film which you can watch a dozen times and still marvel at it.

Some people simply won't appreciate it

This movie is perhaps the most wonderful, most heartwrenching one I have ever seen. No other movie has made be cry since 'My Life'. The emotion in this movie is overwhelming. Mouse's fear and lonliness. Her joy at finding true friends. The love between Tory and Paulie that is always there, even making the sex scene seem beautiful instead of just sexy, which is so rare in movies these days. Paulie is a very intense character, whose emotions always seem genuine. Her depression, her anger, her despair, her intense determination to re-claim the love that was cruely ripped from her by homophobia... Let her stand as a warning to those who have been duped into believing that homophobia isn't really harmful.

I absolutely loved this film. I'm not a dancer but always wanted to be one. This film seems to portray a realistic sense of what the ballet dance world is like. The story was sweet and sentimental. I think everyone should see this movie!

DePalma's Underrated Masterpiece

This film really spoke to me as a kid. As an adult, after working in the music business for ten years, I can appreciate its often brilliant satirical insights. The film features great talents that went on to do more recognized works, and they are at their very best here. Paul Williams has never evoked such powerful emotion than with this original score (he was robbed if he didn't get an Academy Award), and Jessica Harper will capture your heart as the quintessential heroine. Far more humorous than "Rocky Horror," and at the same time more dramatic than "Velvet Goldmine," DePalma's approach to the archetypal drama of Faust is deceptively simple in the way it is presented, yet deftly does justice to the classic story by drawing its overwhelming energy from several genres at once! Too bad they don't make films like this any more. "Immortalize" it on VHS, or better yet, wait for the DVD.

Good entertainment and teaches something too

Well, I have only one complaint, and it should serve as a warning to DVD viewers: The DVD does not go directly to the menu when you put it in to the player. It plays the three episodes BEFORE going to the menu.
Other than that, the episodes were great! I just love the songs there!
