Really good

Disney and Destination Films ... (Yes I know they are no longer keeping cool) it seems like they are producing many not so good films. Since their stupid rip-off of "The Haunted Mansion" to the end of "Home on the Range", the quaility of their movies went down the drain. Anyway, Lindsay Lohan was really hot, but mostly, losing up all her manly glory, and "Confessions of a Teenage Drama Queen" was funny at times but a few laughs weren't intresting or entertaining.
Story 4/10Music 6/10Humor 6/10Replay Value 3/10Hotness 2/10Ages 6-12 (maybe for over 13, probably not only for a boy)
However, compared to Thomas and the Magic Railroad, The Lizzie McGuire Movie, Antz (from Dreamworks) and The Haunted Mansion, this film is 8 to 10 times better. I'm fans of Nemo, Winnie the Pooh, Toy Story and Shrek (from Dreamworks) etc. I can take 100% of these things, 50% of this, 40% of Thomas, 10% of Mansion and 0% of Antz. THANKS!!!!

The Wiggles in "Jeff's Dream!"

So you wanted to see what the Wiggles looked like in outer space? Well, here you have it, with the plastic wax animation and the songs to boot. There aren't a lot of songs in this 40 minute presentation, but it was really an interesting story.

Jeff's asleep, and Murray, Greg, and Anthony, wonder what Jeff's dreaming about, and they posture about a few things, only to discover that Jeff's dreaming of space. So, 1...2...3... Blast Off, and there all in the spaceship with Captain Feathersword, who ends up taking them on quite the journey. They go to Planet Rock Star and they do a number with King Mondo, and it's a really fun thing to watch. Paul Paddick, who plays the Captain, also uses his face to showcase the performers who've played at the Planet, and he's such a wonderful performer anway. Then they are running out of gas, and end up on the Planet Gloom, where the Gloomies live, and it turns out alright, and with a few laughs from the Wiggles, they start laughing and smile again, and the whole planet gets its primary colors back.

This is a fun little show, and the kids should like it, although it's not your typical fare. Our family liked it, but you ought to prime them first. All the voices are in place, it's just the animation which is different.

Highly recommended!!!

Scrooge - movie DVD cover picture

SCROOGE has been a guilty pleasure of mine for many years. As a kid (before cable came along) I hoped that one of the local stations would play the film around Christmas time. I probably haven't seen SCROOGE since I was 11 or 12 years old.
The newly released DVD looks fantastic. The film is 33 years old, and its production design and colors are rendered well on the DVD. The overture is included.
Here's some quick impressions after seeing the film again:
- Alec Guinness is a genius! As Marley's ghost, Guiness has some very funny moments. Watch his performance closely: Guiness achieves "ghostliness" without the aid of digital effects. Watch him "float" parts of his body, especially his hands when he sits down. The walk, the voice, the "floating". Simply brilliant.- There are several very good songs. My favorites: "I Like Life", "Thank You Very Much", and "Happiness".- I actually like the flashbacks when Scrooge is young and in love. Very touching. And pretty.- They really edited this film for TV! There's scenes in SCROOGE that I've *never* seen before; specifically, the scene in hell at the end. Funny!
So, even though SCROOGE brought Christmas into my house in September, it was a welcomed, early celebration.

If you haven't seen it yet, please don't read this ...

I have a somewhat conflicting interpretation of the story - I wonder if I overlooked something that one of you could point out.At the end of the film I had the impression that Camilla did survive the accident very badly burnt and that "the face" behind Winky's is hers (consider that she has the blue box). The plot has a real strand and a dreamlike strand. The former are the attempted murder, the accident, and the scenes at Winky's. The latter are ramblings of Camilla's mind as she is trying to make sense of the accident while her memory is partially coming back. She is confused about her identity and sees everything from Diane's perspective. The "coming back" is reflected in her gradual realization that the roles of Diane and Camilla in the "dream" are reversed. Camilla is initially the protege and Diane is in control, but we later find out that it was the other way around: Camilla, the star, used Diane, the commonplace debutante, and then dropped her. In her recollections, Camilla gets to the point where she wakes up in the night and begins to realize it's all wrong somehow. Then the movie tells who Diane really was and how she brought about the accident. The story ends with the opening scenes: Camilla has not recovered her identity, the hitman continues to look for her (he asks the Winky's waitress to keep her eyes open for anyone new in the neighborhood). The young man with the visions of "the face" sees her ...

Shrek (Two-Disc Special Edition) - movie DVD cover picture

This is one of the best movies I have seen in ages. It is rare treat finding a movie that is both as entertaining and intelligent as this one. There is some potty humour, especially during the opening credits, but this is only a small part of the movie. The rest of the movie is a wonderful satire of fairy tales, twisting around such common notions as ugly = evil and beautiful = good, and pokes fun at the capitalist power-driven nature of the Disney empire and at Michael Eisner and his shortcomings (Katzenberg getting revenge?).
Shrek's life of solitude is disrupted when the local tyrant decides to evict all fairy-tale characters from his kingdom, sending them to live in the swamp. In order to get back his privacy, Shrek makes a deal with the tyrant to retrieve a bride. Joining him on his quest is a talking mule voiced by Eddie Murphy who is, to my pleasant surprise, actually very amusing. And the princess is not a typical "damsel in distress". All of the voice talents pull off a wonderful job, and the computer animation is some of the best I've ever seen. They even pull of the most difficult task of portraying facial expressions in such a realistic manner that you can really make out distinctive emotions.
This film strongly appeals to an adult audience. And unlike most recent Disney films, there isn't a surplus of musical scenes that become sickening after a while. On the other hand, some younger viewers may find scenes, e.g., of Shrek eating eyeballs disturbing, but the strength of a child's stomach is usually underappreciated by adults who have forgotten what childhood is like (come on, I bet you sang the songs about Gopher Guts and old women swallowing flies and spiders when you were a kid too).
Once again, Dreamworks has done an excellent job.

King Of Hearts - movie DVD cover picture

This is a movie everyone should see. I know that everyone always writes that, but I really mean it. I've never seen another movie like it in my whole life. there's something hauntingly, charmingly true about it. The story is set in 1918, in a small french town that has been evacuated because there's a bomb hidden. A scottish soldier is sent in to disable it, but he doesn't know where it's hidden or when it's going to go off. Accidentally freeing all the inmates of the insane asylum who've been left (by the fleeing townspeople) in the town, the soldier finds himself stuck among them, trying to convince them to leave, but having no luck. the inmates are irresistibly lovable, carefree, full of wisdom and completely free of all societal restraints. it's impossible not to fall in love with the world they create in the evacuated town. I think the movie is only made better by being in another language: reading the subtitles, you can imagine the characters saying the lines in any way that you want. French is such a beautiful language: that, combined with the unobtrusive music, makes for a film strangely silent and beautiful. It makes me cry. Please go watch it. It's definitely one of my favorites.

Made Loud to be Played Loud

Can't get to the show? No problem! Jarmusch gives you an all-access pass through the highs and lows of life on the road with Crazy Horse over the decades, and the ride hasn't slowed down a bit, though the players may have rusted a tad. This movie isn't as much a concert as it is a lesson in how four people (five if you include the late Danny Whitten) can constantly churn out better and better music every time they get together. There's no such thing as "status quo" with Crazy Horse. Yeah, the interviews show how life on the road gets tiresome, but once they hit the stage it all seems worthwhile. And, for any doubters out there, you won't see a better performance than the ones Neil the the boys put on for this disc. There's not a bad song to be found, and the sound quality puts you in the front row (you can choose Dolby 5.1 OR DTS). The video's there only for background - well edited, but don't expect to see every detail, every line in their faces on stage. At one point, the members of Horse talk about their jackets... the ones that say "Neil Young and Crazy Horse" on the back. Then Neil points out that HIS jacket just says, "Crazy Horse." He knows, and I hope that the others do also, that they all contribute to the sound that's uniquely theirs. If you want loud, great rock 'n roll with none of the garbage that sometimes gets in the way, like so much of today's music, I can't recommend this higher. (Even if you DO like today's stuff, get this anyway and see where it REALLY comes from.) Hey Hey, My My, Crazy Horse will never die!
