Velvet Goldmine is Mr. Haynes crowning glory! Superstar, Poison and Safe were the stepping stones to the pinnacle of his imagination-Velvet Golmine. A beautiful fairy tale of the glam rock scene that made me want to strap on some platform boots, put on glitter makeup and break out my Ziggy Stardust records! An absolutely gorgeous movie with what I hope are soon to be huge stars Jonathan Rhys Meyer, Christian Bale and the most-definatley-will-be-absolutely-huge- after-Star Wars-comes-out Ewan Mcgregor. Toni Collette as Angie Bowie should have garnered her an Academy Awards nod for supporting actress. What a fantastically original movie!! Don't believe the hype that this is just a Ken Russell rip-off(what has he done since the awful Whore anyway!??) Enjoy!!

it's what american TV aspires to be, funny and intelligent

this is one of the best shows on tv. period. gotta love it. it's just so funny and true. the episode where susan finds out that patrick taped over their sexual interlude is just classic. this show is available in the states on both bcc america and sporadically on some pbs stations, but i would think that the dvd is worth it. i mean, we all need a good laugh every now and then. i've some of these episodes several times and they never get old.

Go see it

Ed Norton and Ben Stiller are as great as ever. Good directing by Ed Norton and great acting all around. Jenna Elfman was stunning. Not only was she funny and very good but I thought she really broke out of the Dharma stereotype I thought she might have a problem with. and at the risk of sounding pathetic. I'd marry her tomorrow, as I am now completely and forever her number 1 fan.

How to Make an American Quilt - movie DVD cover picture
Wonderful Tear Jerker with an All-Star Cast

"How to Make an American Quilt" is one of my favorite "chick flicks." And hopefully labeling a movie as a "chick flick" doesn't immediately damn it into some lesser category. When I want to curl up in a quilt on a rainy day and sip hot cocoa and watch a movie, "American Quilt" would be a perfect choice. This is one of the few times when I liked the movie far better than the book--which I read second.
In "American Quilt," Finn (Winona Ryder) comes to spend the summer with her grandmother Hy (Ellen Burstyn) and great aunt Glady Jo (Anne Bancroft) in Grasse, California. Her plan is to finish her master's thesis while considering the marriage proposal of her long-time sweetheart, Sam. Finn's inability to stick with a project--she's changed thesis topics countless times--seems about to derail her relationship with Sam. Amazon.com's main review criticizes the movie adaptation of the Whitney Otto novel for focusing too much on Finn. I thought that Finn's attempt to sort out her feelings about relationships, while talking to the other women in Hy and Glady Jo's quilting group, sewed the story together quite well. As Finn is pondering whether a modern, intelligent woman can preserve a sense of self within a marriage, one by one, her grandmother, aunt, and their friends share the stories of their marriages or their most significant relationships. Older women sharing their life experiences to help guide a younger woman rang very true to life.
Poet Maya Angelou turns in a surprisingly powerful performance as the leader of the quilting group. Her story of how, as an unwed mother, she came to work for Hy and Glady Jo's mother, is one of my favorites. She holds her own with this great actresses. Bancroft and Burstyn are wonderful as sisters whose love for each other has endured, despite betrayal. Samantha Mathis, as the young Sophia Darling, is stellar as the diver who can't wait to shake off the dust of her small town and explore the world, and who discovers that realizing such dreams aren't so easy.
As a quilter, I absolutely loved the various quilts seen in the movie. I appreciated the detail of including fabrics seen in the flashback scenes into the blocks that each woman contributes to the friendship quilt.

DVDs Vs VHS

This DVD has 3 somewhat funny, somewhat action-oriented episodes. When I first saw the english episodes, I was disappointed. But I wasn't disappointed because of the music, dialogue, or anything to do with FUNImation's interpretation of the episodes. I wasn't happy because there was next to nothing that I couldn't wait and see for free on Cartoon Network. I personally couldn't see anything that would warrent an edit from FUNImation. The entire reason for owning a Dragonball Z DVD over the cheaper edited video is the censorship. But, when I took a look at the Japanese Version, I realized that it was well worth my 20 bucks. The parts that were supposed to be funny were, and made more sense than the English dialogue. Overall, if you like the funny parts of Dragonball Z and can bear some minor cusswords (they say them a lot in the Japanese version of these episodes) than I would recommend this DVD. Otherwise, wait for Cartoon Networks release on TV.

Good Stuff, good stuff...

This show is absolutely hilarious. You'll laugh, you'll cry, you'll love it! Or hate it passionately.

I grew up in the Reno area and I know several people who work for the sherrif's department which makes it even funnier. It's obvious that it's not filmed there, but they did nab some footage of the sherrif's departments vehicles(or stole them). There's no mall within a hundred miles of Reno that's three stories high or even two for that matter...Palm trees? Seriously, try pine trees.

This is a must buy for any fan of comedy.

The best dvd eve, but...

The third season of dawson's creek on dvd is the best, the quality of the dvd is super, but there is a little problem with the audio quality. sometimes you can barely hear the sound, what the characters are saying. that's why i hope that in the fourth dvd there will be subtitles in English, i really do hope so...Other than that, this is the best season of dawson's creek out of all the seasons. this dvd summarizes the beginning of Pacey/Joey relationship. you basically get a pure nostalgia and that's why everybody got to have this dvd at home.

Excellent DVD

I saw this show a month ago in Saratoga, NY. Just as I remembered!! Buy this product if you want a front row seat to excellent entertainment. Two infamous groups joining for a night of awesome music and unbelievable musical talent!!!! Their experience and undeniable chemistry together, provides great entertainment, young or old. I deeply appreciate that all of these men have not lost their "magical" touch for the stage, and at the same time, their love for the music and the fans.

Achingly Good

To all of the self-important "critics" who gave this film anything less than five stars, I would simply say this: please don't try to spoil an important, meaningful movie-going experience with your criticisms of "plot-devices" and "cliches." This movie (with its pitch perfect cast) tells a story that is the only story worth watching--that is, real life. Life is at times almost unendurably painful and then it is gut-wrenchingly beautiful. This is no "device," it is the honest depiction of one family's struggles in their life's station. Who cares how they got there, or whether they should have left Ireland or are watching their kids close enough?
The performances of the children are scary good with the ten-year old's rendition of Desperado so sweet and sure that I must get the movie for that scene alone. I never thought I would see children's performances that rival To Kill a Mockingbird's, but I have, and the Bolger sisters are the daughters we all should be so lucky to have.
It is no coincidence that this movie was filmed in NYC a month after 9/11. Jim Sheridan tells the story of his family as catharsis amidst death. See this movie as an affirmation of why there is cinema in our society.
