Thoroughly Modern Millie - movie DVD cover picture

If you like silly movies, but don't really like visual humor, this is a better choice. It's a great movie and you see more in it each time you watch. I loved the way you get to see Julie Andrews' thoughts (as Millie) in little signs held up like the silent movie era. Those of Chinese ancestry might not appreciate some of the humor, but you must remember this is a movie about the 1920's and the term politically correct had not been coined! And it's so zany, there's really nothing harmful in it. Millie is a secretarial school graduate, determined to get a job and marry her boss. The songs are outstanding and the casting was inspired. Mary Tyler Moore plays a rich-girl-going-out-into-the-world to perfection and words can't describe Andrews as Millie (check out the opening song, where she buys a devise designed to make "full fronted" girls have the flat look that is in vogue. As she buys a pack of cigarettes--we must be modern at all costs-- it comes undone and the vendor does a double take as her "front" expands quickly!) Carol Channing is her usual crazy self as Muzzie, who has instructors teaching her everything from fighting to flying (with romance on the side!)and she does a great song about jazz. This is a great movie!

A memorable sequel

It's not often we see a sequel that excels the original, but F/X 2 is impressive in accomplishing just that. In this version, Brown has left the film world to work on special effects for himself. He's into toys this time, and Bluey, his remote robot is a prize! Again, the Mafia is involved in the story development, this time over a set of gold coins stolen from a Vatican art exhibit years ago. Brown's again co-opted by corrupt cops [what an enduring theme!] and again he's on the run. This time, Dennehy extends his 'good cop' role from the first F/X in coming to Rollie's aid.
Unlike the first film, F/X 2 raises Brian Dennehy's participation significantly, giving him many opportunities to engage in droll wit. He manages the role with style and honesty. The exchanges with Joanna Gleason as the Ass't DA are quality Dennehy. Gleason herself adds a lustre to the film, providing an engaging contrast to Rachel Ticotin's role as Tyler's girl friend.
F/X 2, likes it predecessor, is a timeless film. The repeated themes of corrupt cops and Mafia intrigues doesn't make this film boring. Quite the opposite, showing how prevalent and wide ranging their activities can be, both for good as well as sinister reasons. This film is worth a place in your inventory, if for no other reason than Brown's performance. He's a quality actor when given the opportunity - and this film was an even better expression of his worth than the original.

OK - this was supposed to be released last year. What's going on? The UK version WAS released, so why are we still waiting over here? Is it something to do with that dumb remake?

One of my all time favourites!

I've seen this one a couple of times now and really find it spell binding. I'm especially fond of the cinematography and the story -- while it's boy meets girl, etc, this is a new twist. Plus you get a glimpse at another culture in another time and maybe just question what is "true." I look forward to watching this one yet again to look for other things I missed

Ten stars. Over the top hilarious

You'd have to be brain dead not to laugh yourself silly over Pirates of the Caribbean and Johnny Depp's over-the-top androgynous performance, falling somewhere in the realm of drag queen, gay-and-proud-of-it-but-don't-tell-my-gi rlfriend, performance art, and swashbuckling hero of the Errol Flynn variety. The plot is secondary to Depp's vamping and camping around the place, but still, it's a good plot: an adventure quest to recapture the good ship Black Pearl, a ghost ship taken over by Geoffrey Rush (he plays his part exceptionally well, too; but no one can compete with Depp, who completely and unashamedly steals the show), a mutineer who is desperately seeking Susan - no, that's another movie...desperately seeking to reverse an ancient curse that has reduced him and his mangy crew to live as skeletons in the nether world of the eternally undead. I know, I know: it defies belief, but you're not expected to believe it. Just sit back, crank out the popcorn, and I don't care what your age or your politics or your race or your religion: you will love it.

Queer as folk tells me a lot!

I bought this DVD just because I wanna watch and enjoy TV show on gay life; however, this DVD changes my views about my life and myself. Somehow, I have been ashamed of being gay before. But after I watch this DVD, I come to think I'm very glad I am a gay man! the name of "Queer as folk" may be derived from a saying of Yorkshire, " There's nowt so queer as folk," and this TV show really tells me that human, especially gay people, are inestimable. Anyway, this DVD is great just for entertainment, and this will be your must!

im gonna git you sucka

Before "Scary Movie" and their hit-television series "In Living Color" the Wayans' family starred and produced this hysterical send-up of the "blaxploitation" films of the 1970's Starring Keenan Ivory Wayans, Damon Wayans, Kim Wayans and a talented cast of some of television's most popular African-American stars, "I'm Gonna Git You Sucka" takes place in the inner.
Returning home for the funeral of his brother (he died of an "O.G." , an overdose of wearing too many gold chains), Jack Spade (Keenan Ivory Wayans) discovered that a crime boss, Mr. Big, is running the ghetto using fear and intimidation. His mother (Janet DuBois of television's "Good Times"), his brother's widow (Dawn Wells of television's "A Different World") and others fear for his life, but he goes on deciding to end Mr. Big's reign of terror and crime.
Loaded with gags, jokes, and many hysterical scenes especially Dawn Wells' "PMS rage scene", "I'm Gonna Git You Sucka" for anyone who enjoys spoofs. Keep an eye out for comedian Chris Rock in one of his first film appearances as the "rib guy" (he appears twice in the film: once during the regular run, and the other at the very end of the credits). This film is a comedic classic that paved the way for the Wayans to takeover Hollywood with their unique style of humor and wackiness. If you loved "Scary Movie," then you'll love this film.
