Sublime...simply sublime

I consider myself a romantic, but a pragmatic romantic. Love at first sight is an idea that is simply too hard for me to swallow. What is much more believable is what took place when I took a chance to view this film. Over the course of two hours I became intrigued, was mesmerized, and then finally succumbed to what in hind-sight should have been a forgone conclusion. I love Amelie. Audrey Tautou's portrayal of this remarkable character coupled with Jean-Pierre Jeunet's whimsical story-telling is intoxicating. I literally stumbled out of the theatre cognizant of the fact that I was in no condition to drive. Why? I had just met the person we all want to know, who felt the way we all want to feel. It was simply a remarkable theatre going experience. American cinema is dead, long live France.

1958 Monster Classic

I'll give this a 3. It's held up well and still can put you on the edge of your seat at times but don't expect to be blown away by it. It's one of the best of the cheesy 50's monster films but it's still a cheesy 50's monster film.

Wagner - Parsifal - movie DVD cover picture
An ineffable experience of a work of genius

Syberberg does with visual imagery what Wagner does with leitmotivs. The result is a work of genius twice blest. Syberberg takes us inside the mind of Wagner and places his Christian-Buddhist Shopenhauerian masterpiece Parsifal in the context of Western political and intellectual history. The use of actors properly cast for their pasts avoids the often odd visual effect of a singer who does not look at all like the role he or she is playing. Sometimes the lip-synch is out-of-synch, and there are occasional vocal lapses in the singing, which is generally excellent. The sound quality of this 1982 movie is quite good and well reproduced on the DVD. Wagner's message of compassionate wisdom as the basis of morality comes clearly through. One can see why the Nazi hierarcy banned this opera from being performed in Hitler's Germany, since Wagner's championing of the Buddhist idea of compassion for all is so extremely at odds with the Nazi worldview. This is a wonderful movie whose powerful images, both visual and musical, will stir the deepest human emotions. Anyone who loves Wagner's music and enjoys great cinema will want to view this movie. It is one of the great artistic achievements of the past few decades.

One of the Best Films Ever Made

I'm another one of those poor souls who saw "Nausicaa" in its horribly butchered form "Warriors of the Wind": I was eight or nine when my brother found it for me at Blockbuster, and it's proof of Miyazaki's genius that the masterpiece of "Nausicaa" still managed to shine through the travesty that was "Warriors." Long story short, once the Internet got itself invented I tracked down a fansub, watched it obsessively, and have been monitoring the progress of this DVD release for years.

It doesn't disappoint.

I'm trying to find the words to describe what makes Nausicaa so incredible, so unique even among Miyazaki's other movies. Don't get me wrong; I'm a huge Ghibli fan, and I've watched and loved the movies that critics claim are superior to "Nausicaa": "Spirited Away," "Princess Mononoke." And maybe, in terms of pure animation sophistication, they're right. But I have never been as touched by a film as I am every time I watch "Nausicaa."

Maybe, because it was Miyazaki's first movie, the idealism and conviction that's strongest in youth is also strongest here. Maybe "Nausicaa" has such a raw and emotional power because, when Miyazaki made it, he was just finding his vision as a filmmaker and storyteller.

Whatever the reason, "Nausicaa"'s apocryphal storyline of post-apocalyptic survival manages to be completely different from anything you've ever experienced, while at the same time as familiar as a fairy tale. Miyazaki manages to show more about the the flaws of humankind and the strength of life in two hours than any religious text can in two thousand pages.

Oh, have I mentioned? I love this movie. Watch it as soon as you possibly can.

Heart warming, heart breaking.

It has been many years scince I saw this movie, but the plot has stuck with me. An ex-boxer (John Voight) tries to win the heart of his son (Ricky Schroeder) by returning to the ring, and inadvertently wins back the heart of his ex-wife (Fay Dunaway). Ricky Schroeder's performance will rip your heart out.

A Stupendous Comedy in Drag

Robin Williams divorces Sally Field and goes to great lengths to appear as an old English woman to become his kids' housecleaner.
Robin Williams is hysterical, giving us a sincere performance, which makes the comedy a feast, rather than a hard-to-digest comedy from folks like Tom Green.
Sally Field is great as Robin Williams ex-wife. Neurotic and driven, yet motherly and thoughtful, she and Robin capture magic on the screen. Supporting actors are also great: Pierce Brosnan, Harvey Fierston, and the kids are all great. All of this is held together by a fantastic script. A great soundtrack features Aerosmith and the Four Seasons among others.
This movie can be watched over and over again, with something new to appreciate each time.

Full of Joy

The very best of everything that became the 60s is reflected in this infectious, joyful, vibrant and creative movie that broke forever the dreary formulaic pop-star flicks that doomed Elvis Presley et al.
I was there in the theater for the debut of this movie, and it's hard to describe the sheer happiness of our group of teenaged girls, all dressed in black, all with long straight hair and bangs, all with a "John Lennon" black leather hat (we were trying to look like a combination of the Beatles and their long-haired, all-in-black, gorgeous girlfriends at the time).
Surprise, surprise, the movie has endured. It works on two levels: One, to see just what it was about those four British boys that brought such inexpressable joy to an entire generation. Their cheekiness, their looks, their clothes, and above all, their music, was something heretofore unknown in the American pop culture, and we couldn't get enough of it.
On another level, A Hard Day's Night is just a darn good movie, from the innovative photography (black and white, unexpected and brilliant) to the offbeat and seemingly ad-libbed script to the direction to the boys themselves, who proved to be naturals. They were not asked to pretend to be something they were not: They were just their irrepresible selves at a time when all things seemed possible. This is a one-of-a-kind movie, a classic for its time and always, a microcosim of a time long gone and never to return.
If you haven't seen it, you are in for a wonderful treat. If you have, give it another look; it's even better than the last time you saw it, I guarantee it.
