Qurky Mistaken Identity Flick

For some strange reason, I wasn't completely blown away the first time I saw this film. After repeated viewings, however, I realized how incredibly funny it really is. Bridges and Goodman are outstanding, the dialogue is hysterical, and the music fits in perfectly (unless you happen to be a huge Eagles fan). The characters and story truly grow on you. One minor criticism : The brilliant Steve Buscemi is somewhat wasted as Donnie. Overall a great movie.

Elitism aside...

It is amazing to me that Andrea Boccelli appears to cause some such outrage and concern. In their condescending way they discredit this man because he isn't a "real" singer. What matters is how the music makes you feel when you listen to it. Perhaps I'm uneducated in music, but, though I have never been an opera buff, listening to this DVD, and watching the beautiful staging of the concert, makes me tingle in a way that few other albums do. Boccelli is, to my humble, simplistic ear, perfect, performing in a magical setting and introducing me to music that I otherwise would probably have ignored. If you have ever visited Tuscany, this disc will bring back wonderful memories of a tremendous place. If you have never been there, get this disc and watch. It's the next best thing to being there!
Purists, elitists and snobs may not like Boccelli, but I feel that this disc is superb both in musical content and in theatrical beauty. Bravo, Andrea!

Sight Unseen

This is a show I've tried to get for years. I couldn't join the Fox Video Club because I am living in Japan. Finally! I only hope that this season includes some episodes with Aunt Esther(Lawanda Page). She was my favorite character from the entire series. Of course, Redd Fox was indeed the star but the chemistry between him and Ms. Page was certainly one of the high points of the show.

A Great Movie About Teaching!

I have been very fortunate to have a great job as a teacher. I have been lucky enough to see all different types of schools: rural, suburban, and urban. My three years in a Bronx high school were some of the most challenging, frustrating, rewarding, scary, funny, heartwarming, and gutwrenching of my life. Inner-city teaching is truly one of the toughest jobs in the world.
There have been many movies about inner-city teachers: Dangerous Minds, The Substitute, Teachers, The Principal just to name a few. While none of those movies are terrible and some were fun to watch, none of them really showed what it is like to be a teacher. 187 is the only teaching movie I have seen that captures the emotions a teacher goes through teaching in that environment.
Now parts of 187 get carried away. I won't deny that. But the basic theme of what can happen if a teacher takes a situation to the level of the students is universal. No teacher is going to hunt down his/her students like in the film but again the basic idea of how to handle a threat or violence in a school is universal.
I also like how the film discussed how Samuel Jackson's character is trying to regain his desire to teach and playing that off the young idealistic teacher and the burned out teacher. These are real characters and I felt the comparisson and outcomes was extremely credible.
Bottom line is this, I do not think non-teachers will love this movie they might like it. But this is a teachers movie. Again, its goes over the top at times but the basic themes and emotions are extremely accurate.
This is a powerful and realistic film.

Definitive Horror Classic still impresses today!

Outstanding 1933 filming of H.G. Wells' novel is directed brilliantly by James Whale (hot off the success of FRANKENSTEIN and THE OLD DARK HOUSE). However major credit must go to Claude Rains as the mysterious Dr. Jack Griffin who experiments with invisibility potions and is slowly driven to acts of murder and mayhem. Ironically it was Rains' first performance, being completely unseen until the very end of the film, and the role that catapulted him to stardom. How appropriate though, isn't that what happened to Karloff, Lugosi, and Chaney? Titanic's Gloria Stuart is also a thrill to see in her earlier years. I don't need to remind you horror fans of this, but the special effects (even for 1933) are nothing short of incredible and seem far ahead of their time. This movie is so great, you have to see it to believe it. It's suspenseful, atmospheric, has great acting by a great cast, and is a definite worthy addition to any old Horror Film collector. DVD contains a fascinating documentary "Now You See Him: The Invisible Man Revealed!" by Rudy Behlmer, who also narrates the film commentary. Great classic film, not only for the Horror/Sci-Fi Genre, but for all time - BUY IT NOW!

One of the best John Wayne Movies I've seen

This is a great WWII action movie featuring the "Duke". Again he is paired with Patricia Neal as his 'romantic lead' (also in 'Operation Pacific' together). It begins on the December 6th, 1941 and goes on from there. This is NOT the 'shoot from the hip' type of John Wayne movie. John Wayne acts the part of the mature Captain/Admiral he portrays (much more convincingly than in The Green Berets'); down to the 'Survivor's Guilt'. It has ships, subs, airplanes, bombs, torpedoes, big guns, sailors, Marines, parachutes, spying behind enemy lines, suicide missions, romance, and everything that goes with them. Basically everything a WWII afficionado needs!

Supposedly Premminger loved directing the Duke and it seems to show. While the coincidences are a bit contrived (his long, lost son and Kirk Douglas falling for the same girl, etc.) the powerful performances in the rest of the movie overshadow these minor glitches. It features an all-star cast - virtually a who's who of the time - with Henry Fonda (who played Nimitz again in 'Midway'), Kirk Douglas, Burgess Meridith, Paula Prentiss, Tom Tryon, Larry Hagman (no, 'Jeannie' isn't there), George Kennedy, Carrol O'Connor, Slim Pickens, et al.

I only wish they had more Special Features on the DVD. It's a LONG movie (167 minutes) but it won't seem that way once you begin.

Arthur - movie DVD cover picture

If i could,i would give this movie ten stars. I laughed throughout the entire movie and just when i thought the fun was over it wasn't. There is almost no need for a plot in this movie it was so funny. If you don't think Dudley Moore is funny then see this movie and then tell me that still don't think he's funny. If anybody in the world doesn't think that this movie is funny then they're an idiot or just have a very very poore sense of humor. I saw his other famous movie ten and he only had a few realy funny parts in that movie but this movie is non stop. I can't even pick a favorite part because every thirty seconds something that was absolutely milk flying out of your nose funny would happen. Another good part to the movie is you see a person who on the outside is just a hilarious drunkerd, make decions based on love and kindness and you see him give a little of himself. I just rented the movie and i'm going to buy it ASAP i suggest you do the same.

The Truer Story...

"At Close Range" is a film that, at the gut level, pursues its audience long after viewing. The brilliant manifestation of acting genius by Penn and Walken is only matched by the haunting realization of this "true story." Undoubtedly, that old saying that true-life is more compelling than fiction takes hold in this case. In all, "At Close Range" digs at the heart of its audience and, with as much attention to sincerity as Hollywood allows, surpasses the disconnect of reality and nightmare. (Something as equally interesting; Mary Stuart Masterson's character in the film was included on behalf of her real-life model Robin Miller--my aunt. The company producing the film was denied permission by my grandmother to use Robin's name, so Hollywood did what it does best--they changed names, capitalized on someone else's tragedy, and denied royalties to the victim's family. I would say, too, that there are only a handful of us who actually know the truer story behind this film, and it is viciously haunting.)
