Quit your complaining! This is excellent!

I read the reviews of everyone here before seeing the DVD and I was a little worried that the DVD quality would be bad, but I had nothing to worry about. First of all, someone put it best when they said that we've been spoiled by Lain, I'm sure that series was made with DVD in mind. Evangelion was originally made in the 80's. Someone else said that the Laserdisc looks better, of course it does! Laserdisc isn't nearly as compressed as DVD. I don't know if they changed this in the more recent printings, but Misato still promises "fan service" not a "bargain." There are also things that were translated that weren't in the VHS I watched, IE some girls yelled "pervert," "wimp," "ape" etc in the background, I had always wondered what they said. In all, this is an excellent DVD of an excellent series! Hurry up with the next episodes!

To SMASH or not to SMASH

I loved all the marvel comic movies. When Hulk comes out its going on my shelf next to X-Men, Spider-Man, and DareDevil. I have to agree with everyone when they say it is slow and it is, but only in the beginning. The Hulk lived up to its comic book counterpart by smashing here and there, with special effects everywhere. When Bruce Banner saves his fellow scientest but gets blasted with gamma rays himself he becomes the Hulk, whenever he's angry. After fighting the military and the streets of San Francisco and afterwards facing off with his father, the Absorbing Man, the Hulk should be on your shelf. I also want to post there will be a Dr. Strange movie, a Fantastic Four movie, an Iron Man movie, X-Men 3, possibly a DareDevil2 and maybe even a Hulk 2. They have reserved seatings on my shelf.

A Christmas Classic !

Honestly, how can anyone get tired of watching this? HTGSC comes on every year and every year I shall continue to watch it. I have always liked reading books as a kid from Dr. Seuss and the Grinch is definately one of his best along with Cat in the Hat. Parents, this DVD is a good Christmas gift for your children no matter what age they are.

Pasolini's swansong: grim, disturbing, but fascinating

The setting: North Italy during the Nazi occupation of 1944-1945. Four Italian leaders, the Duke, the President of the Court of Appeals, the Bishop, and the President, conceive a scheme to take nine young men and women, late teens, take them to an exquisite villa, "far beyond the reach of any legality", and perform their indecent desires on them. They also marry each other's respective daughters in order to "join our destinies." Thus begins Pasolini's adaptation of the Marquis de Sade's 120 Days Of Sodom.
What kind of indecent desires? Basically, the routine is as follows: at 6 pm, the captives are to assemble in the 'orgy room', where storytellers would tell a series of stories on a given subject, and where the leaders, inspired by the stories, could engage in any act of lewdness at the expense of the captives. The President insists on details: "It's solely how we draw from your stories, the type of stimulation that serve us and that we expect from them."
The captives are on the receiving end of the inspirations conceived by the four leaders, whether it's acting like dogs, forced to eat a meal not described here, being raped, or being mistreated in general. They are naked most of the time.
The most despicable of the elite four is the President, a thin, wormy-looking man with a permanent sick smile on his face. He tells stupid jokes, (well, actually one involving a man and his friend 6-times-8 is kinda funny) and is rather fond of being on the receiving end of homosexual sex, which consists the majority of sex in this film.
Those who break the rules, such as having sex with another woman or performing the slightest religious act have their name written down in a black book to be given some cruel punishment.
It is in the Circle of Blood segment that the captives are tortured in cruel and disturbing ways while each leader takes turns watching the events from upstairs with binoculars. The radio playing "Veris leta facies" from Carmina Burana adds to the grimness of the spectacle.
There are some interesting quotes, political and psychological. "Nothing's more contagious than evil" says the Duke, to which the Court President says, "Some can only do evil when their passion drives them to evil." This ties in with the ambiguous difference between freedom and utter willfulness defined in fascism as described on the video sleeve blurb. Also, "as you well know, killing the same man many times is not enough; it's advisable instead to kill as many living beings as possible." And on love: "the limitation of love is that one needs an accomplice. A libertine’s refinement lies in being at once, executioner and victim." The bearded Paolo Bonacelli plays the Duke, and also came out in The Stendhal Syndrome, in Night On Earth as the monsignor in Roberto Benigni's cab, and Johnny Stecchino, also opposite Benigni.
The video sleeve description of "Revolting, memorable, and beautiful" hits the mark. It's self-indulgent, excessive, and deserved the X-rating it got, but I found myself fascinated by this sordid mess of a movie. The movie's sordidness took on a new meaning with Pasolini's own murder--he was bludgeoned to death and run over by his own Alfa Romeo (!!!) by a youth who claimed Pasolini made homosexual advances towards him.
Oh, by the way, for those who don't know where Salo is, it's inbetween Milan and Verona, sitting at the west shore of Lake Garda.

The (War) Eagle Has Landed!

I saw Space Station once at Kennedy Space Center and twice at the BFI IMAX in London, England and have been eagerly anticipating the DVD release. As a certified space geek and Auburn grad, it was especially pleasing to see Col. Jim Voss '72 doing so well. Probably the only downside to the film is the narrattion by Mr. Katie Holmes...I mean, Tom Cruise. But honestly, you won't be paying much attention to Mr. Holmes' (dangit, I mean Mr. Cruise's) dialogue, as your attention will be transfixed on the incredible camerawork. A worthy addition to my IMAX space collection, I give it a 5/5.

Does the word excruciating come from the word crucible?

Crucible: n. A brutal physical or emotional test.
I have mixed feelings about this movie, even though I rated it a 5. I liked it, while everyone I know hated it, yet it is heart-wrenching and terrible at the same time.
I'd only recommend this if you're highly interested in the Salem witch trials (I was mildly before, but this movie really sparked my interest in them). If you're interested in adultery, this would be fine (I'm not, but oh well) as well.
If you're not a big fan of drama that leaves a terrible, lasting image in your mind, DON'T watch it, the hanging scene almost made me cry (I'm generally quite passive when it comes to emotion, though).
