Will Grow In Stature Over Time

It was easy not to notice this in theaters a decade ago, but time has been exceedingly kind to AFTER DARK & likely will continue to be. Already it stands as one of the 90s best films.Though its Southwestern locations (Indio, California was used) are both a bit too sparse and modern, in every other way this captures the ineffable aura of Jim Thompson's prose (and anyone who's actually READ "The Getaway" knows how utterly impossible a task translating his best effects to film really is). Director Foley has done a splendid job in setting a tone of dreamlike, sunburned melancholy and maintaining it throughout, aided immeasurably by fine performances by Rachel Ward & Bruce Dern and an absolutely riveting one by Jason Patric. I had faint hopes for this film before seeing it, due mostly to Patric in the lead; I was floored watching it, and all DUE to Patric's performance. Though a little young for the part, he captures perfectly the likable ambivalence and roiling inner pathology of the Jim Thompson Hero: you never stop feeling for the guy even as you know he will inevitably be compelled by his inner torments to do monstrous things before the story ends. Patric's complete immersion into "Kid Collins" steals a little thunder from one of Bruce Dern's most chillingly indelible portrayals of slime personified, "Uncle Bud". (Fans of Dennis Hopper's "Frank Booth" from BLUE VELVET would take to Uncle Bud immediately, I think.)More than any other film adaptation of Thompson, AFTER DARK -even more than THE GRIFTERS - embodies that peculiar cowtown existentialism of his that tells us we're each of us alone in a world where things start bad and only get worse, pretending we're sane the way kids pretend there's a Santa Claus. A film without an audience in 1990, but little by little, year by year, a growing and appreciative audience is building. See this movie.

Not really about the movie per se

Well, in case anyone was looking to buy Emiliana Torrini's version of "If you go away" on cd, it can be found on "Next: Tribute to Jacques Brel". The cd costs $38 without shipping and is an import. The cd contains what appears to be covers of old Jacques Brel songs. I hadn't heard of the majority of these songs or for that matter of Jacques Brel, but when I listened to the songs I liked them except for one or two. There's some really good stuff on the cd, so if you want the Emiliana track and don't mind shelling out the money, don't be worried about the rest of the tracks sucking. In case anyone was wondering, the song is the one that's sung when Christina Ricci's character is leaving school towards the end of the film. Oh, and the movie was pretty good.

Update: 3-14-05

For the poster who was interested in the song at the end of the movie that wasn't by Emiliana Torrini. I believe the song you are looking for is "Falling From Grace" by Gentle Waves and can be found on their cd titled "Swansong for You." It's an import and costs approximately $26 without tax and shipping or you can purchase their single aptly titled "Falling From Grace" which is roughly $12 without tax and shipping.

An indy cross between Love Jones and When Harry Met Sally.

Two college friends spend some time together over the holidays. They experience some tension and then an emotional revelation regarding their underlying feelings towards each other. Along the way, the male lead's sarcastic humor offsets the cool, withdrawn nature of the female lead. There are some surprising cameos.
I rented this movie with some friends and we totally enjoyed it. We watched it three times over a weekend. It is good to see Black people on the screen interact with each other and share intelligent dialogue without violence or self-degredation being the main themes. Are you listening Hollywood? There is a market for movies like this. Soul Food, The Wedding, and The Wood are also good movies to watch if you enjoy Hav Plenty.

The Skull Beneath The Erotic Skin

Like the later and much glossier MIDNIGHT DANCERS, MACHO DANCER depicts the lives of male prostitutes in Manilla; unlike MIDNIGHT DANCERS, however, it is considerably more gritty and disquieting. The story concerns Pol (Alan Paule), a young man in the Manillian provinces who has drifted into prostitution with an American G.I. in order to help support his impoverished family. When his patron finishes his tour of duty, Pol's friend Greg (Bobby Sano) urges him to try his luck in Manilla.
Once in Manilla, Pol becomes a "Macho Dancer," working as a preformer and prostitute at a police protected club in the tourist belt--and becomes friends with fellow club worker Noel (Daniel Fernando) and upscale call-girl Bambi (Jacklyn Jose.) Although we realize they are motivated by poverty and lack of other skills (time and again the characters simply state "I was hungry"), the film paints itself in extremely tantalizing, erotic colors--and much more explicitly so than MIDNIGHT DANCERS--but as the story progresses the eroticism of the film seques into an extremely dark story of the foundations of the sex-trade: youth, poverty, hunger, and a corrupt police and economic system that preys on all three. By the film's conclusion one feels extremely guilty for having, perhaps, salivated a bit over the boys and girls--for it is precisely that reaction that creates the marketplace which so brutally preys upon them.
The youthful cast members are extraordinarly beautiful, casual with their nudity and behavior before the cameras, and surprisingly talented in their ability to convey both the beauty that makes them so sensual and the dark, dangerous world through which they scramble. The entire cast is remarkable, and Jacklyn Jose is a standout--an extraordinary beauty and remarkably gifted actress. Although MACHO DANCER hooks its audience with titilating eroticism, it has a sharp jab that prevents that same audience from romanticizing prostitution in any way. All the more disquieting for it display of beautiful youth, after seeing MACHO DANCER it becomes impossible for one to think of prostitution as a "victimless crime." Recommended.

Wonderful Live Show!

Ron Wood takes the stage after a spirited introduction as "The Sultan of Swag" and launches into "So you Want to be a Rock and Roll Star". It becomes immediately apparent that Wood and the remarkable band that was assembled for this concert are in top form. Drummer Martin Wright is a great world class drummer and also really shines on vocals. Wright is one of the many unexpected and very pleasant surprises on this fine DVD.

Ronnie Wood's family is well represented here by his brother-in- law Vinnie Karslake and daughter Lea Wood who are superb as back up vocalists. (The very capable and confident Karslake sings lead on one number) His son Jesse is on guitar and does a fine job. The rest of the band, all young and talented, are Tramper Price on keyboard, Frankie Gavin on violin and Mark Wells on Bass. Irish songstress Andrea Corr also appears on this show. (Wood lives in Ireland) And of course, last but not least Slash guests and plays on most of the DVD. I have never seen him looking uglier or playing better. "Paradise City" is a real rocker.

The DVD is dedicated to Wood's friend the late George Harrison with whom Wood wrote the haunting "Far East Man" which is beautifully done here. "Ooh La-La" is also worth a special mention. All of the songs on this DVD are well done. It was filmed in a small venue called The Empire Theater and the joy felt by the audience is apparent.

Extras on the DVD include a nicely done backstage documentary and a section that showcases some of Ron Wood's wonderful art. Look for hidden tracks here.

A great DVD by one of Rock's great pros. A must have for any serious music fan.

It is full of hope and faith , it is a lesson of love.

I think that whoever had the idea of this movie has a great sense of hope and faith in God.I've prayed all my life to find a place in my own heart and in other's where the magic of a secret garden will become real. This movie has helped me a lot when I've had moments of deep sadness and dispair, it has never let me down, no matter how sad I've been, it has always let a smile blossom in my face. I sincerely thank the creator of it with all my heart.

wow

this the worst movie ever made, not including eight heads in a dufflebag. It's so bad, even Dr. Forrester apoligizes for it being bad. This movie was Rated number 1 by the Msytie fans when MST3k was on Comedy Central. If you're going to start your MST collection, start with this one, you will not be dissapointed. Your friends will love hating this one. If you look closely you even see Mike in this episode. He plays Torgol.
