Quintessential 007? It's a tie between this and....

I was introduced to the Bond films in the 80's and have followed them since so one would think I would prefer Moore or maybe Dalton or Brosnan. But when I think Bond/007, I only think of Sean Connery and the films from the 60's. I guess it's because the decade was perfect for the character with its look, feel, and music of the times. And GOLDFINGER was arguably the definitive representation of all this:

*Shirley Bassey's great rendition of the title song.
*the classic Aston-Martin DB5 with all the gadgets.
*the strong female lead with that name: Pussy Galore!
*one of the coolest and most beloved henchmen in the series: Odd Job.
*one of the most ambitious, greedy, resourceful villains ever(well played by Gert Frobe-hard to believe he was dubbed in the movie as the audio commentary pointed out).
*classic scenes like Shirley Eaton covered in gold, the "laser beam" scene, the rumpus room scene(check out that art decor), and the end fight.
*and great character interaction(love the scene where 007 is figuring out the plot and Goldfinger seems genuinely pleased that someone recognizes his 'genius')

All great stuff. The other guys had some good movies in their reign as Bond, but I think Connery was on a roll with From Russia With Love, Goldfinger, and Thunderball. There was so much style and a special aura that defined what Bond/spy/adventure films should be during that 3-film stint. And for the record, the other film that ties this is THUNDERBALL imo(which has Largo with the eye patch as a villain, the Spectre organization, Claudine Auger in shades on the beach, the jet pack, the underwater fight, etc). Sorry, back to Goldfinger. Great dvd with lots of extras(2 commentaries, 2 documentaries, etc). Fan or not, the film alone is worth the absurdly low price and the loads of extras are what every dvd collector would want. Highly recommended for anyone.

Blue Velvet - movie DVD cover picture
"It's a strange world, isn't it?"

That line of dialogue from David Lynch's unquestioned masterpiece BLUE VELVET describes Lynch's film universe perfectly. With the new SPECIAL EDITION dvd out we truly get a glimpse inside the making of a great film and how it can immediately be misunderstood by someone like Roger Ebert. The behind the scenes documentary is great with interviews from many of the film participants. To enter the world of David Lynch is to cross into an unknown vortex of subconscious desires, fears, and dreams. The film brilliantly shows us the illusion of the perfect smalltown life vs. the city underworld right next door. The images stay with you long after the movie is over. Dennis Hopper is absolutely perfect in a harrowing, funny, and brutal psychopath filled with self loathing and anger. I just saw a revival showing at a theater in Los Angeles and I highly recommend to anyone to see it in a theater if possible. On the big screen the movie envelops you into its world from which there is no escape. BLUE VELVET is definitely not for everyone, and that's ok. Lynch wasn't trying to make a film for the masses, but rather as a complete personal expression in the movie art form.

Not Bad

I love metallica and I have owned the video of this release for over 5 years and I can easily say that this DVD surpases it in every sense. The sound is great and the picture quality is outstanding considering it was made from bootleg footage. Just a really good DVD period.

Wonderfully done

The fact that this movie evokes such strong reactions illustrates its success. This movie is not made to entertain, but instead makes us think by challenging our views and ideals. It is not the typical hoopla Hollywood usually turns out; it is a pleasant surprise about a few subjects that are not-so-pleasant. It is the kind of movie that you can't say you liked without explaining why, as it is a dark movie without a neatly tied up ending.
This movie examines stereotypes and subtly questions the bonds that tie us and the values we live by. As the credits roll, the viewer realizes this film has no happy ending or a resolution and is you are left with questions and outrage and an epiphany that this movie has a lot more to say than we thought it would or could.
In addition to a deep, meaningful, complex, emotionally touching, and interesting story, this movie also has incredible writing, directing, and acting.
I highly recommend this movie.

Mallrats (Collector's Edition) - movie DVD cover picture
The cookie stand is not a part of the food court!

To me, this is possibly one of the greatest comedies ever created standing out from all the others in it's class, thus, not being a part of the food court if you get my reference. The jokes are hilarious and just keep coming and the odd refrences like to BJ and the Bear somehow make the movie that much funnier. If you haven't seen Mallrats yet, then you haven't experienced comedy on a full scale. If you have, then see some other Jay and Silent Bob movies or Mike Judge movies like Office Space (another classic). If you buy this movie, you won't be dissapointed.

10 Stars!!!!

This is the BEST thing on DVD by Einstein in my opinion. My son (2 yr) already knew all the animals they presented, but it is fun and the music is great. The DVD edition allows you to select play music only so we do that as background to our play rather than just sit glued to the TV. The flash card element...SUPER!HIGHLY RECOMMEND. We have several VHS of this line, and the DVD is by far WORTH the extra $$ because of the added elements (flashcards etc)

Best Picture - 1995 and ever

As an avid movie watcher, I have seen many films, yet Braveheart has my nod as the best ever. It has a bit of everything, from war to love, from revenge to compassion. While not historically accurate, it was not meant to be. Randall Wallace, writer of this film and the book it was based on said, "I didnt want the facts to get in the way of the truth." That the movie doesnt qualify for playing on the History channel doesnt mean it isnt a great movie. If you have not seen this movie, buy it now, and play it. I watch it quite often, and it has never gotten dull or old.

A Great Original Film

This was made four years before SILENCE OF THE LAMBS and was based on the earlier Thomas Harris novel RED DRAGON. They did not call it RED DRAGON, because there was another movie that year with DRAGON in the title that did not do so well...and the studio feared it would get confused with that film. It's driected by Michael Mann who is famous for MIAMI VICE, and yes it shows in this film. But it's a grueling fast-paced reality-based thriller similar to SILENCE OF THE LAMBS. Big challenge is they had to vocalize Will Graham's thoughts in the book into actual lines in the movie. Sometimes you can tell the film was made on a smallish budget in the mid-80s, but on the whole? It holds up today as a great adaptation of a great book! It's a fun movie, and if you are a fan of the other thrillers like SILENCE OF THE LAMBS this will be right up your alley. Yes, there is a wonderful appearance by Hannibal the infamous cannibal -- though not much is made of his modus operandi. He is never referred to as a cannibal. But Brian Cox's portrayal is strong if brief. The real stars here are the actors portraying Will Graham and the killer. Both give creepy a human edge as they play cat and mouse with each other. And fans of Joan Allen -- her portrayal of the blind Reba is amazingly well done. Sexy and stylish, not too much gore, and very tight pacing. I can't be more effusive about this movie.

Put that coffee down! coffee is for closers only.......

There's not a wasted moment in this film of David Mamet's classic modern American tragedy about capitalism at it's most rabid. Set, where else?, in a Real Estate office, it is one of the best filmed plays of modern American life. BOYS IN THE BAND is another drama that is worth looking up. The poetic music of Mr Mamet's writing is retained intact and continues to glow and resonate through the superb work of the great acting led by Mr Pacino and Mr Lemmon. A film to return to over and over. The superbly ironic rendition of Mr Jarreau's singing of Blue Skies as the credits run at the close of the film still echoes in my mind. Quite a moving and resonant work of art. A document worth owning.
