Quietly entertaining

I've seen this Austen adaptation three times, and it never fails to entertain. Austen has captured the era in which she lived so well, this film treatment seldom hits a false note.
I'm no Austen scholar, just a lover of costume dramas. I enjoyed this one more than most, principally because of Amanda Root. Let's face facts. Emma Thompson in Sense and Sensability, and Gwyneth Paltrow in Emma are just gorgeous women. Amanda Root is more plain, and as a consequence, more believable in the role. Yes, you can forget Thompson and Paltrow in their roles, but the just aren't representative of what I imagine English women a couple of centuries ago.
The acting is solid, the British accents understandable (some films out of Australia and Scotland, especially, really need subtitles!), and the sets fit what one would expect from that era.
I rate this film very highly. There are great characters here, and very good acting, even from minor roles. The film doesn't drag, and you really feel Anne Eliot's sense of loss and regret.
Also stars the wonderful Susan Fleetwood and Corin Redgrave. Ciar?n Hinds as Captain Wentworth was also very good.
Highly recommended if you like Austen and costume dramas, as do I.

A TOTALLY OVERLOOKED WONDER

Before Sunrise is far from a polished movie. It doesn't involved carfully choreographed explosion sequences, and whiz-bang car chase shoot-outs. Though some would consider this a fault, I find this especially why I love the movie.
For those who haven't seen, the movie essentially takes place during one night in Europe. Hawke has to exit a train after having briefly conversed with Delpy, and invites her to come with him and keep him company for the night while he waits for his transfer. She adventurously accepts, and the night is spent walking the city as the two probe each other's minds and discover they like what they find.
Ethan Hawke and Julie Delpy's performances are so raw and realistic that you get the feeling a truly romantic and intelligent movie without the help of a James Horner score. More than being just a romantic movie, in illustrates the beauty of conversation, the thrill of doing something foolish, the beauty of finding wonder in the commonplace, and the wonder of finding beauty in another.
This movie is not a sappy emotional mess, like many of the pathetic excuses for movies we see these days. I am a guy, and even I enjoyed this movie for its incredible ingenuity. If you want to see an intelligent, interesting, different movie, see this completely underappreciated sleeper and tell your friends about it.

A Mastermind Film

Explosions and inferno are the key to this movie. Wait, no, Steven Seagal is! Forget Tom Sizemore who cusses like an orphan and Dennis Hopper with his cheesy Irish accent. It's about the Buddhist bomb squad leader who is the genius Steven Seagal. "I bet she's into some nasty stuff, brotha!" They 'treat the devices' and make Tom Sizemore do his job. Do some detective work man! Jaime Pressly has a black eye and Tom Sizemore points right at it saying, "sorry about the eye." Yes. The explosions are relatively decent for this straight-to-tape film and Nas makes a short appearance, thankfully. The movie is nothing original, but still makes Steven Seagal look like a genius. Cops versus a mad bomber. Enjoyable!

Very funny-underrated Chaplin movie

Like Brian Jones, this is the Chaplin movie I show friends who've never seen a Chaplin movie. They are always amazed at how funny and clever it is. There are so many big laughs in this movie I don't know where to start. Just thinking about Chaplin in the cage with the sleeping lion and the little dog jumping up and down barking like crazy cracks me up. And the scene where Chaplin is riding a bicycle on the highwire and the monkeys attack him-they pull down his pants and one monkey even sticks his tail in Charlie's mouth! I just love this movie from beginning to end. It holds up to many viewings.

A must have movie for every family

Seldom do we find a movie as delightful and as insightful as Monsters Inc. On the delightful side, it is one good story, it dazzlingly us with amazing animation and a level of character development seldom seen in real movies. On the insightful side, it deals with the terror that all of us face, the terror of the unknown.

It would be a serious mistake to call this a childrens movie. Although my grandchildren have probably watched it a dozen times, it is a movie that us adults will truly enjoy. Monsters Inc. address adult issues, namely, our fear of the unknown. The monsters are just as fearful of the children as the children are of them. It is only through fear and intimidation of the children can the monsters do their job . . .supply scream-power for the power plants that supply energy to their monster world.

Although each world lives in fear of the other, they have more in common that the differences that seem so readily apparent. Each world desires to live in peace, each world wants love and acceptance, but it is only through the use of terror can the monster world survive, or so they think.

This is a movie about overcoming the prejudices that keep us apart as human beings. But thankfully, it did not degenerate to a kum-by-ya feel good movie with simplistic politically correct answers for what ails the human race; rather, it shows us that acceptance of our differences takes work and that no matter how good our intentions and motives are, there will always be some who succumb to hatred and prejudice. It is a complex world we live in.

This is a must have movie for every family

All time Classic Comedy

In my opinion, the funniest movie ever made. John Belushi is absolutely hysterical, particularly as he makes his way through the cafeteria. Classic line: "What we need is an incredibly stupid gesture on somebody's part" .... "and we're just the ones to do it".

Extemely moving... A film that everyone must see!

Quite simply, this is one of the very best works of film that I have ever seen. I have read Anne's diary, biographies, and other supplemental books countless times, and this film echos Anne's spirit entirely.

To begin with, Anne and the other members of the Secret Annex look so much like they must have in real life - and the acting is so well done that it's almost easy to forget that these ARE just actors! Anne's multifaceted personality is portrayed very realistically (as a teenage girl, I believe I have the experience to say that), and Ben Kingsley's performance as Otto Frank is heartbreaking. The first time I saw this movie, in fact, I was almost too shocked to cry. Everyone knows the tragic story of the Holocaust, but for once the facts were truly humanized on a personal level.

The events in this film are very well laid out, too. It's important to get to know the Frank family in their happier years before they went into hiding, and of course Anne's story does not end at her arrest. I would DEFINITELY recommend this movie to all mature audiences: Anne Frank fans, World War II buffs, history teachers and classrooms, and anyone who has the slightest interest in realizing the state of the world only sixty years ago.

Who said tough-guy movies were dead?

In a time where a new breed of "sensitive" actors are all the rage, Reservoir Dogs stands alone as being one of the few films brave enough to stick with the tough-guys. Quentin Tarantino is the mastermind behind this gem of a movie, which is in turns hilarious, disturbing, fierce, and ultimately heart-wrenching. Who knew that a tale about diamond thieves and a botched heist could be so powerful? Tarantino, obviously. With the help of brilliant actor Harvey Keitel, who both supported the film financially and found the perfect cast, Tarantino has provided us with the most influential film of the 1990s. The acting is realistically gritty, the dialogue is delightfully crisp, and the soundtrack is one to die for. If you love movies, this is an essential view.
