In America - movie DVD cover picture
Starting over in a new land.

Samantha Morton and Paddy Considine play a pair of devoted parents, Johnny and Sarah, who bring their daughters to start a new life "In America." Johnny and Sarah are virtually penniless and they take up residence in a tenement-like dwelling replete with drug addicts and other assorted deviants. The daughters, Ariel and Christy, look upon the move as an exciting adventure to be savored.
Jim Sheridan directed and co-wrote this somewhat autobiographical movie, and he dedicates it to his brother, Frankie, who died at the age of ten. Johnny and Sarah are also bereaved. They lost their young son, and they have had a very hard time letting go of their deep feelings of sorrow and grief.
"In America" is a rich tapestry of sights and sounds, and there are strong elements of magical realism that add a touch of whimsy to the story. Jim Sheridan explores a number of themes in his film, such as the difficulty of facing the death of a loved one, the grinding humiliation of poverty, the hopes and dreams that keep us going, and the relationships that ultimately redeem us.
Two sisters, Emma and Sarah Bolger, beautifully portray the young daughters. These enchanting actresses contribute immeasurably to the film's effectiveness. Djimon Hounsou is also a strong presence as a Nigerian neighbor with demons of his own who strikes up a friendship with the poor Irish family.
Although "In America" is a small movie in many ways, it has a big heart and top-notch performances. Sheridan directs with warmth and compassion, and I get the feeling that he knows how hard it is for an impoverished immigrant to leave his native land and start a new life in strange surroundings.

Babylon 5 - The Complete First Season - movie DVD cover picture

I saw all the episodes a couple of years ago. The first season was the weakest, it was comparable to Star Trek's best offering. However, it really sets up the universe that the rest of the seasons work within this framework. My wife hates SciFi and she got addicted to the episodes with me and really loved it. In fact I think it's the only SciFi I've heard her praise. If you're just getting into the Babylon 5 craze, just remember it really takes off after after the first season.
The price for the entire season is very reasonable and puts owning the entire set in reach. Compare to the price to buy the first season on VHS. I've been waiting for the day I could start buying entire seasons on DVD. This is a golden moment for SciFi fans.
addendum:Just got done watching it anew. Second viewing of the episodes was better than the first. So many little details I missed, so much forshadowing for things in later seasons. Every episode leaves you with more questions. The real story is the character development over long plot arcs that doesn't treat the viewer like a simpleton. It's all foreshadowed deeply.
When's the second season coming out? I'm waiting impatiently!

Having been fortunate enough to have seen tiesto numerous times before ,I really thought that knew what to expect from this dvd.I mean I knew that the track selection would be amazing but the whole show just blew me away.I truly believe that this takes the term of DJ'ing to a whole new level and just goes to show why tiesto is number 1 in the world right now.He always pushes the boundaries and keeps setting the standard. His interaction with the crowd and the amazing light displays just added to the whole spectacle. It was'nt just a mix set but a sublime performance.I would recommend this dvd to any dance music lover or to anyone who wanted to find out what the scene is all about. It's dance music personified.......tieso kicks ass!!!

High Quality MASH Episodes!

I have collected all the MASH DVDs and season 8 blew me away into earth orbit! From the bittersweet "Goodbye Radar" to the disturbing "Dreams" there is plenty of classic 4077 comedy to lift your spirits. Mike Farrel gives an excellent performance in "Period of Adjustment" and Alan Alda is as endearing as ever. Highly recommended for the non-collector!

Raising Arizona - movie DVD cover picture
"They GOT more than they can handle!"

"Raising Arizona" is one of what I consider to be the five instantly classic films by the team of Ethan and Joel Coen, the others being "Blood Simple", "Fargo", "Oh Brother Where Are Thou", and "The Big Lebowski".

But "Raising Arizona" is my personal favorite, and probably the most quotable films I have ever seen, with some of the best dialogue ever written for film.

The story in brief: H.I. (Nicholas Cage) and "Ed" (Holly Hunter, in one of my favorite roles of hers) portray, respectively, an ex-con and a cop who meet when he keeps getting arrested for robbing convenience stores. They fall in love, get married, decide that "there is just too much love" between them, and they need a "critter to share it with". Upon finding that "Edwina's insides were a rocky place" where H.I.'s "seed could find no purchase", they try to adopt, but are turned down because of H.I.'s record. Then they read in the newspaper about local unpainted furniture storeowner Nathan Arizona (Trey Wilson), owner of "Unpainted Arizona", and his wife having quintuplets as a result of fertility pills, and who joke that "They got more than they can handle". The couple hatch a plan to take one of the babies and raise it as their own.

What results is an ongoing, fast-paced, hilarious set of misadventures, complicated by the appearance of a ruthless, heartless outlaw named Leonard Smalls (Randall "Tex" Cobb) Nathan Arizona hires to find the missing baby, and two felon friends from H.I.'s past (John Goodman and William Forsythe), who make a childbirth-like escape from prison. Sam McMurray (the smarmy dad in "Drop Dead Gorgeous") is H.I.'s....smarmy boss, Glen. Frances McDormand (real-life spouse of Joel Coen, and star of other Coen films such as "Blood Simple" and "Fargo") is his excitable wife Dot. M. Emmet Walsh ("Blood Simple") has a scenery-chewing cameo role as H.I.'s talkative co-worker.

When Ed finally opens up her 5'2" can of Southern-fried whup-ass, throwing her badge to the dirt, striding towards Leonard Smalls as she bellows with all her might, "Gimme back that baby, you warthog from HELL!!!" I always fling my arms up and shout "You go girl! Kick his ass!"

And the way Hunter cries is hilarious.

Holly Hunter was great in this role, as one would expect. She's a very talented actress, in both serious and comedic roles.

Nicholas Cage and Holly Hunter made a great onscreen couple, Cage with his hair standing out in every direction, looking like a hapless, browbeaten puppy half of the time, and Hunter as his diminuitive firecracker of a wife who loves him and tries to keep him honest (oh yeah except for that little kidnapping excursion).

I could go on and on about this film but suffice to say that so far I haven't met anyone who didn't find "Raising Arizona" hilarious. And as any great Coen brothers film, it has a certain mythic quality that's hard to describe, but is present all of of the brothers' best efforts. When I was single, I often used Coen brothers films as a barometer of sorts for prospective boyfriends. For instance, I remember seeing "Fargo" on a first date, and when we came out of the theater, the guy (whose name I have since forgotten anyway) remarked "Huh, I didn't think much of that", while I was thinking how blown away I was by the film! I immediately thought to myself "So much for him! This relationship won't last long."

For more great Coen comedy, check out "Oh Brother Where Art Thou" (2000), which is loosely based on Homer's epic poem "The Odyssey". Another great Coen comedy is "The Big Lebowski" (1998), which also includes my favorite singer/songwriter Aimee Mann in a brief cameo, and boasts a cult following that has resulted in an annual "Lebowskifest" for fans of the film.

"Blood Simple" (1984) is probably my favorite film noir modern-day classic tale of lust and betrayal, and is my personal second-favorite Coen brothers film. "Fargo" (1996), which won the Screenwriting Oscar, and an Oscar for Frances McDormand, is another must-see Coen classic.

What's Not To Love??

Girls Just Want to Have Fun is an 80's classic, representing the time and culture perfectly. If you want to know what it is like try thinking of an 80's version of Center Stage and mixing it with Dirty Dancing. The movie follows Janey Glenn(Sarah Jessica Parker), who has just moved into town, as she tries out for the DanceTV contest to be a regular on the show. But as always in the 80's the parents get in the way and she has to sneak out in order to practice with her elected dance partner Jeff Malene(Lee Montgomery). As romance blossoms so does jealousy for a spoilt brat Natalie Sands(Holly Gagnier) as she tries her hardest to break the two up, to win the guy and the contest, by getting Janey into trouble with her strict folks! But who will win? Well Getting into trouble is easy, but getting out of it is all the fun! Look out for some younger versions of stars of today - Helen Hunt(Lynne Stone - Janey's new friend), Shannen Doherty(Maggie Malene - Jeff's younger "Punk" sister) & Jonathan Silverman(Drew - Jeff's annoying friend).

Ringu scariest movie ever!

This was a great movie but I don't think people should be comparing it to The Ring. Each movie was going for a differnt feel. Ringu was going for a more sort of dream world were people are phycic and can read minds. The Ring was going for a real world feel where every thing had to make sense and every thing had to be logocal. Both movies pulled it off. I recamend you you buy both. They are really scary.
