A beatiful achievement.

I love this film. It is one of my all-time favorite films. I could go on about the greatness of this film, but let me highlight a few things. First, this film is totally beautiful. Second, the directing is solid. Third, the message of the movie is well worth thinking about. I am not surprised that Martin Scorsese made this movie. I watch it with great pleasure. Go out and watch this film.

Coppola's revenge

Francis Ford Coppola's "Godfather" films continue to be treated with the respect due the dons of American gangster movies, with Paramount going all out on a state-of-the-art five-disc set that marks the trilogy's debut on DVD. Whatever ambivalence the studio has exhibited over the years toward Coppola's three films has clearly faded. The box set is beautifully presented, with care and class evident at every turn. The creative decisions reportedly were made almost exclusively by Coppola and his Zoetrope Prods. Coppola's love -- and obsession -- are evident throughout. "The Godfather DVD Collection" clocks in at a massive 745 minutes. Coppola provides new director's commentary on all three films, adding to the already significant body of knowledge and lore attached to them. His comments are focused and instructive, with pauses that let the films' content amplify his points. Coppola's commentary strips away a good bit of the first film's mystique. Shot on a tight budget, the production was "pretty flimsy," he says. Doubles are used extensively to speed shooting. Extras blunder their way into shots. A key actor can't handle his lines while facing the great Brando. Even the great wedding scene was rushed and fudged. Slight of hand is everywhere. It was all "very sloppy," Coppola admits. The set's extra features run from the sublime -- Marlon Brando's screen test; an alternative opening to "Godfather III" -- to the absurd -- Coppola actually spends screen time detailing the quality of the grommets that bind his shooting notes together. Cinematographer Gordon Willis' yellows and tannic browns of "The Godfather" are rendered beautifully, while the coal-mine blacks of "Godfather II" provide a dramatic contrast to its subdued flesh tones. Both films have minor speckling throughout, due to age and the limitations of 1970s film stock. The more contemporary "Godfather III" (1990) is pristine, however. All three films offer a bit more picture information than previous video releases, including the ambitious laser set of 1997. Detail is greatly enhanced despite the heavy shadows and high contrast. Taken as a whole, these sure-handed transfers deliver a highly artistic presentation.

Groovy!

I think that this movie does an excellent job at getting the viewer sucked in. When I started watching it; I really couldn't just get up and walk away; because it really pulls you in. I loved all the emotions in this movie, as well. Some parts are very emotional and sad; some parts are very serious; it's just an excellent mix of every emotion. I also really enjoyed how they put in real footage from the 60's and mixed it in with the rest of it; I think that was an excellent touch. Some people have left reviews saying it was a terrible portrayal of the 60's; though I wouldn't know, because I wasn't alive back then, I say "Who cares?" if it will get people (particularly people who WEREN'T alive back then) some insight and information on what it was like back then and everything (good and bad) that went on, and teach kids about war, and the segregation that used to be, etc. without boring them, I think they've done wonderfully!

Watch this film several times to really know and enjoy it.

I wrote a review of this film in August of 2000 several yearsafter seeing it on the big screen. Recently, I rented thevideo and over the course of a month, watched it six moretimes. Each time I viewed Horseman, I discovered more andmore, the minute details that I just didn't see the firsttime through.
Many reviewers have critisized the film for the horror, notenough action, not enough dialouge, or that Angelo(OlivierMartinez) was two dimensional. The first thing that I noticed
about Martinez was his gorgeous looks, but as I came to knowthe character better, and watched how others interacted withhim, I became more and more engaged with the fun of thischaracter. I have also read the books that deal with Angelo, and believe that Martinez captures this character perfectly.
Angelo is a young noble who has been raised to be honorableand fearless by his Italian duchess mother. His honor is,above all, the most driving force of his life. His motherhas also taught him, from childhood, to defend Italy fromall invaders. These two components, when confronted byevents and people (particularly Pauline), create some veryamusing scenes in the film. But a one time viewing doesn'tallow the spectator to catch all of the subtle undercurrentsof this beautiful film.
Some viewers are put off by all the dead bodies, but itis an important part of French history, that really existed. To be sure, the film is very mild compared to what theFrench actually faced during those dreadful times.
Finally, some viewers have been annoyed by the lack of lovescenes between the two main characters. The viewer needsto remember that the events are depicted in 1825, and people weren't as quick to express sexual and/or romanticfeelings as is done today.
The ending is appropriate because Angelo is in Italyfighting for its freedom. Any contact between distancestakes months and sometimes years, considering the circumstances,to actualize. But you do know that Pauline and Angelo yearnto be together, and that is simply a part of life during that era.
A gorgeous film, haunting, fun, and very true to life from thepast.

Outstanding

Jack Bauer (Keifer Sutherland) is an agent with the Counter Terrorist Unit. His brief is to prevent the assassination of presidential candidate David Palmer. Intelligence has warned them of this threat but not who is behind it or when, in this 24 hour period, the assassins will strike.
Shown in real time, this is an exciting and tension filled production. The plot twists and turns and is never predictable or boring. The only problem with 24 is that it becomes such compulsive viewing that you're in danger of sitting glued to the screen for all 24 episodes! Fantastic value for money and highly recommended. This is what t.v. should be!

One of my all-time favorite movies!

I absolutely adore this movie! I have been waiting forever for it to come out, then got notified that it was, then it wasnt. What's happening? This is a cast of greats who were very well cast. The movie is suspenseful, has breathtaking scenery, great acting....but.....it's worth seeing the film just for the bear scene and the moose scene! (won't spoil it anymore than that!) Now PLEASE bring out the DVD so we can purchase it!

Modern day greek tragedy... with wine

Sideways is a film that is quite melancoly and I know many who watch it that loathe the main characters, and for that reason dislike the film. However the film is quite easy to watch and the sadness is its beauty. The characters are all flawed and foolish and above all - realistic portrayals of actual people we know in life, perhaps even ourselves.

The film is absolutely hilarious and the characters are so wonderful that the saddness that does pervade the movie is cleansed with great hope. This film really reminded me of some of those fantastic greek tragedies we all read in college.

This is a must watch film.
