Q & U at the peak of their powers. I'm in awe.

...Tarantino is a virtuoso film-maker. He ranks among the very best. There is not a wasted frame in this 136 minute, hysterically violent chop-socky masterpiece. I laughed myself sick through the dirtiest brawl I've ever witnessed on film (although, granted, I cry through Geiko commercials): the showdown between The Bride and Elle (Daryl Hannah). All of the elements (music, cinematography and especially the crack editing) coalesce supernaturally and an All-American Cheeseburger Deluxe of a movie is unleashed. Never boring.

A good thriller, psycho movie that isn't too "adult"

It's an "adult" thriller but it doesn't have too much adult content, a rape with brief nudity and some snap shots from a photoshoot.
This is a good movie, I added it to my list after a recommendation from a anime fan (who didn't like Escaflowne). This movie is a psycho thriller that places emphasis on what is real, what isn't, what's a dream. The main character Mima is a pop-idol, until she makes a huge career change and becomes a small time actress. She later lands a large role in a series. This move upsets some people. She also becomes aware of a website called Mima's Room that list out her daily events, such things as the foot she used to step into the bathtub and the milk she buys, the words she has said during the day. This webpage becomes a focus as Mima visits it day after day, but soon the Mima in the web page becomes angry. Mima's pop-idol personality starts to haunt her, calling her dirty or contaminated, claiming that Mima the actress is not the real Mima at all... Soon Mima starts to believe all this. The story starts to take twists as murders pop up, a mysterious figure keeps showing itself and flashings between fantasy and the real world become more frequent and we lose the ability to determine which is which as scenes are repeated slightly different.
It's a good movie diving into the mind of Mima, showing us her struggle to claim her identity as an actress, a person who is mature with their own goals and paths for life.
I came up with a better ending, well a more twisted one that is, that might have turned it into more of a surprise ending than a psycho thriller ending. If you want to know, watch the movie and then email me and i'll tell ya.

A Masterpiece

While I usually like to review the quality of the DVD itself, this is a very good film besides. I love De Niro and Pesci, but the star of this show was probably Sharon Stone. Although I'm not a huge fan of Stone's, she did a remarkable job. De Niro as a Jew was a bit far-reaching, but believable. Pesci, as usual, was Pesci. 'Nuf said. The DVD quality is great - beautiful picture and great sound. Besides the obligatory trailer, actor bios, and production notes, there are no noteworthy extras. That's a shame, but doesn't take away from this Scorsese masterwork! The best part of this is seeing the maybe-true aspect of corruption in gambling casinos.

Haunting,funny ,sad,reminiscent and heartwarming.

I didn't know what to expect but by the end of the movie I wanted to know these people or at least hang out with them. I found them very earthy and believable charactors with a past present and future that ties us all together. I will add this to my top ten of all time

Shows a different side

This really is a very well done film. Everyone should watch it, both with an open mind, but also critically. What struck me more than anything was the way that some of the kids fighting in our armed forces today (and I mean kids -- 18-19 year olds) seem so inadequately prepared by the system to psychologically deal with the horrors of war and what it is they're called to do. The character formation of some combatants (though certainly not all) seemed to be based on having grown up playing shoot-'em-up video games. It seems as though our military needs to do a hell of a lot more to overwrite this very harmful mentality.

A Thoroughly Entertaining Film from Peru

PANTALEON Y LAS VISITADORS (Pantaleon and the "Visitors") is a completely satisfying cinematic conversion of the novel by Mario Vargas Llosa by the excellent Director Francisco Lombardi. The film is so successful in telling the tale of a traveling boat of prostitutes who are engaged by the Peruvian Army to provide 'outlets' for the soldiers quartered in the jungles of the Amazon (and have been abusing the local women) that what first appears to be a hilarious comedy becomes a rather profound statement about one man's ideals and his dedication to authority: the perfect Military Officer. Captain Panteleon Pantoja (Salvador del Solar) is such an excellent organizer and dedicated officer that he is the one chosen by all of the top military officials to resolve the problem of addressing the sexual needs of the isolated Peruvian soldiers. He organizes, with the help of a brothel owner Chuchupe (Pilar Bardem), a carefully screened cadre of 'ladies of the night or visitadors', has 'uniforms' made, and arranges a military post where the 'Visitadors' are brought in by boat to service the eager soldiers. The project is an enormous success in every way. Pantaleon is obsessed with his project, much to the neglect of his wife Pocha (Monica Sanchez), and is eventually drawn into an indiscretion with one of the Visitadors called La Colombiana (the steamy Angie Cepeda). From there things begin to lose humor, the project is made public by the wily, disgusting radio talk show host El Sinchi (played to the hilt by Aristoteles Picho!), and ultimately comedy turns to tragedy. The real interest of this film is how despite the ultimate failure of the project, our by-the-book Panteleon manages to find a way to bounce back! A satisfying surprise ending to a fine 'message film'. The cinematography is superb, the jungles of the Amazon have not felt so steamy since "The African Queen" jungles, and the acting is intelligent, terse, and informed. There is much to celebrate in this excellent film, not the least of which are the many underlying motives that wear strange costumes but reveal universal truths. In Spanish with English subtitles.

Funny

This movie was very good. It's about two starving actors (Platt, Tucci) who get trapped on an ocean liner. The ship has many odd characters on it... my favorite being Lily, the stewardess, played by Lili Taylor. This movie was was funny and very enjoyable. Rent it, buy it... see it. This will take everyone's problems away.
