The Chronicles of Riddick (Theatrical Widescreen Edition) - movie DVD cover picture
This is Opera in its Purest Form

The villains are as over the top as you can get, but it works. It's never campy. Somehow we've been led to believe that if you go that over the top, it just looks bad if it's done seriously, and while it may be true to an extent, there is a balance struck here. When I say over the top, I mean that the Necromonger flagship, The Necropolis, has a throne room in it with these gigantic thirty-foot statues depicting torture and suffering. The whole room looks like it is carved out of black stone with gold accents where needed. It's completely insane, and anyone who takes sci-fi too seriously will pull their hair out at the idea of the ships having these tortured faces and relief molded into their outer hulls.

Anyone who thinks Dr. Doom is one of the great antagonists of modern literature (as I do) will eat this up with a spoon and demand seconds... and thirds. Lord Marshal is the best kind of villain, one who believes he's right, and believes it so strongly that he's willing to lead a crusade across the universe.

Anyone who hates the idea of turning a good bad-guy into a bad good-guy will love this, as Riddick is still a criminal. Not a scary-looking, but wholly misunderstood guy who has changed and become a lovable hero. He's a friggin' killing machine. He has no "code against killing". He can kill you with a tea cup, and he will if you start some crap with him. You can bolt him down, arms and legs restrained, and sit on his chest holding an automatic rifle right at his face, and he'll STILL find a way to kill you!

Riddick's universe isn't a pretty one. The good guys don't win. Nice, kind, and sensitive people are usually crushed underfoot by things like the Necromongers, and those who stand up to them thinking their words alone will stop them are usually the first to die. Riddick survives because he's the ultimate killing machine. Like Conan, he's the strongest, and like Conan, he doesn't really care about good and evil. If he goes after the Necromongers, it's because they did something to him, or one of the two people he might care about.

The visuals of this movie are outstanding. Everything from the Necromongers' ships, to the planets looks amazing. The acting in most cases is about as over-the-top as the concept and designs, but not so much so that it becomes campy. The ending, also, is one of the single coolest I've seen in a long time. It could end right here and still be one of the coolest endings ever, but it still leaves room for a sequel. One in which Riddick is still an anti-hero, or where he becomes the biggest threat to the universe.

The Fog (Special Edition) - movie DVD cover picture
The Beginnings of Director John Carpenter...

Probably one of the scariest films to be released, THE FOG provides some real chills and, when the fog bank rolls in, some real terror. You won't look at a fog bank the same way again after you watch this movie.
The town of Antonio Bay, California is celebrating it's birthday, but something strange is happening, and just after midnight, the fog bank rolls in and some dead sailors are looking for some people to kill! And the the people can't stop this fog bank from taking it's toll, and this provides the movie with a twisted ending, as with most horror movies.
With some great performances from Jamie Lee Curtis, the beautiful Adrienne Barbeau, and Hal Holbrook, THE FOG is one of those movies perfect to watch alone, in the dark, and with company. After you watch this movie, you may never want to see a fog again! Superb, masterful, and greatly recommended to any horror movie fan.

One wicked movie.

I thought that this was by far one of the best movies ever. It was better than harry potter and the philosophers stone and the chamber of secrets. I also thought that it was as good as the book even better.

Aardman does it again..

Being a big fan of any aardman animation, I of course bought this dvd to make sure I have all 3 wallace and gromit adventures on 1 dvd. Not only do you get all 3 shorts, but also all sort of behind the scenes goodies and talks from Nick Park himself.
For those who dont know much about Aardman, you also get some background information of this great studio, along with some of Nick's early tests of wallace and gromit and other of his early shorts.
If you are a Wallace and Gromit fan.. this is a DEFINITE BUY for your collection!:)

A terrifically powerful film

"Saving Private Ryan" is probably the best World War 2 movie ever made. The cast is excellent, and the cinematography unparalleled. The use of the hand-held, filtered camera during the battle scenes brings Capa's D-Day photographs to life. The story is simple--eight men are sent to find another soldier behind enemy lines--yet powerful by that very virtue. It is full of brilliant cinematic moments, such as the segueway after the horrific opening D-Day sequence: The screen goes blank for a second, and we hear the layered sounds of typewriters clicking like machine guns as Army typists write next of kin letters...Raindrops falling, then falling faster and dissolving into the sound of gunfire...Throughout the film, we are shown many aspects of combat: the depersonalization which occurs in battle (Hanks' Captain Miller staring paralyzed at the carnage around him on the Normandy beach for a moment, then stoically replacing his blood-filled helmet); the tragedy of a single death (Giovanni Ribisi's Wade calling for his mother as he dies--the most realistic and moving depiction of death in cinema, to me...); heroism and cowardice. The music is great, the characters vividly drawn, the historical details perfect.
Steven Spielberg made this film as a tribute to his father, who served as a radio operator in the Pacific theater. His first film, made when he was thirteen, was a war story (in which he was allowed to use real airplanes at a nearby airbase for some of the shots). He'd been thinking of making a big film like this for a long time, and it is rewarding to watch.

A Hallucinatory Psychological Masterpiece

I loved this movie, but I'll be among the first to admit that most viewers are going to be less than thrilled with it.
Spider Cleg (Ralph Fiennes) has just been released to an especially dreary halfway house in London's East End after many years in a mental institution. As Spider attempts to make his way in the world, a task that we see very early in film that will be impossible, the truth of what happened to him long ago as a child begins to unravel.
This is a very psychological movie and a very slow paced one. There is almost no action at all, so if action is something you need, then you'd best give this movie a pass. If, however, you're like me and you prefer psychological dramas, you might love SPIDER. The movie was adapted from Patrick McGrath's wonderful novel of the same name and I do think the format is best suited to a book rather than to a film, but still, there will be those who will love this film as much as I did.
If you haven't read the book, there are times when SPIDER can seem a bit confusing so you really have to pay attention. The payoff will be worth it, though, I can guarantee that. The ending is a real shocker, but not in the way the term "shocker" is usually used.
The cast of SPIDER all give outstanding performances, especially Finennes and Miranda Richardson, who plays a double role (a hint as to what was really going on inside Spider's mind).
I would certainly recommend SPIDER very highly to anyone who loves deeply psychological portraits and doesn't mind a film that is quite disturbing. And, don't forget the book. It's even better.

Algiers - movie DVD cover picture
Refuge, jail, escape, all the same!

That one sure is a great film, not so much in the action or the exotic description of the Casbah of Algiers, but in the impotence of Parisian policemen to get a criminal who has found refuge in this Casbah, in the patience and the certainty of the Algerian policeman who knows the criminal will fall sooner or later, in the method used by this Algerian policeman to trap the criminal out of the Casbah. Just use the simplest trap ever : a Parisian woman who is going to fascinate him in and out of his Casbah. The refuge then becomes a prison. The woman then becomes the bait used by the Algerian policeman. The criminal's girlfriend becomes the informer of the Algerian policeman, and this is not a crime since he is Algerian and not French and since she is preventing her lover from falling into the arms of what has to be a trap or some bait and not a prize. And then, when taken and handcuffed, he will have to get himself shot in the back by some French policeman, under the unmoved and unmoving eye of the Algerian policeman to escape the prison that is awaiting him in Paris. Hence it is the story of a refuge turned into a prison, of an affair turned into a trap and of an arrest turned into an escape. Pepe le Moko is the best after all and no one can ever trap him and put him or keep him in any kind of jail.
