Pure animated genius

The third season of the Simpsons begins with Homer taking a trip to a mental institution, and ending up being roomed with an overweight, white man claiming to be Michael Jackson (voiced by Jackson himself who is uncredited). This Simpsons classic is followed by equally classic episodes as well, as Matt Groening's animated Springfield family finds themselves in all kinds of high jinks and chaos. Kindly-dindly neighbor Ned Flanders opens a store catering to left-handed people, Bart stumbles onto a mob front which he takes an after school job with, and later he and Lisa help Krusty the Clown seek a reunion with his estranged rabbi father. There are other gems here as well, including Bart faking a little boy trapped in a well (and later he himself becomes trapped in an effort to weasel out of his prank), there is another flashback episode as we learn what led to Homer and Marge getting married, Homer's evil boss Mr. Burns equips the Power Plant baseball team with plenty of All-Star players, Marge needs a vacation, bus driver Otto loses his job and moves in with the Simpsons, Homer's half brother Herb (voiced by Danny DeVito) returns looking to reclaim his fortune, and the nefarious Sideshow Bob (Kelsey Grammer) returns as well, with a devious plot up his sleeve. The Halloween Special of this season is also a gem, beginning with Homer, Lisa, and Bart eating too much candy, which leads to some unbelievably hilarious results. The third season of the Simpsons saw Fox's first animated family skewing pop culture with great blasts of comic irreverence, and at the time, it was the best season of the show yet. As before, creator Matt Groening offers a colorful commentary on every episode, which is worth the price of admission alone.

Bridge on the River Kwai

Excellent Movie. I watched it 25 years ago, 10 years ago and again last month and it's still great. More than just an entertaining film, it is inspirational and thought-provoking. You can't help but cheer at the hero's dedication to principle but in the end this turns and becomes the source of his problems. On the down side, the movie seems long and tends to drags in some places, but all in all it's a great classic film.

Great Date Flick

Hanover Street in the theaters was a bigger bomb than any that fell in the period it depicts, World War II. I saw it on the TV not too long ago, and it is not too bad of a film. Harrison Ford, in one of his first films since Star Wars, is American Bomber Pilot David Halloran, a man who falls for a married woman. They have an affair, and then he is dispatched to fly a secret mission to deliver a covert operative into Germany. He turns out to be the husband of the woman he had an relationship with. Soon Halloran and this man must become friends and put their lives in each others' hands. There is some wit here, plus Harrison Ford and Christopher Lee, this movie has something for everybody. Check it out.

Too Tough for Out-of-Shape Beginners

If you are out-of-shape and have never done pilates before, this tape is a little too tough. HOWEVER, it's an awesome tape after you've mastered the basic basics of pilates. I'm keeping it because eventually, I know I'll be able to perform all the moves.

incredible glimpse into "deaf culture"

This show begins when a fiesty five year-old deaf girl asks her deaf parents for cochlear implants, so that she can communicate better with her hearing friends. As a hearing person, it is difficult for me to imagine why any parent wouldn't leap at the opportunity for their child to experience sounds -- but the deaf parents, even though they are clearly bright & loving parents, are not at all eager "to implant" their child. In the end, they decide to move to a community with a large deaf population so their children can appreciate "deaf culture." The girl's father has hearing parents -- and the girl's paternal grandmother is a huge proponent of implants. Interestingly, the father's brother is married to a woman with two deaf parents. (So there are two brothers -- one deaf with a deaf family, one hearing with a hearing wife & deaf inlaws). The brother and his wife, both hearing, give birth to a deaf son, and despite protest from the deaf members of the family, they proceed with the cochlear implants. The decision causes a huge rift in the family. Even in the hospital, after the surgery, the baby's deaf grandmother asks her hearing daughter, with a look of disgust, whether she would implant again if she were to have another deaf child. Almost across the board, hearing folks supported the implants and deaf folks were staunchly opposed to the implants. It's as if the implants are a slap in the face to the deaf population and "deaf culture". One thing that came across from the deaf people depicted in this show is that deaf folks are almos proud of their deafness, and they are clearly proud of their beautiful, expressive language. They do not generally view their deafness as a disability, so they don't understand the need to cure or alter the condition. The deaf parents who elected against the implants come across as good, caring, loving parents -- in a way that is difficult for a hearing person to understand.

experience it

I find myself unable to define what it is about this human spirit that is consistantly able to touch me in a way that no other artist has been able to. This video reminds me of her comments about putting soul into machinery, namely computer generated sound. It speaks of passion that can be placed into devices that might not be there otherwise. We wonder sometimes looking into the faceless realm of plastic and metals that it is impossible to relate to a machine or generated music. Bjork completely stomps on any critical review that the human spirit cannot be contained within technology. This video explores this realm in a beautifully constructed vision of the spirit overcoming the coldness of a mechanized womb in a way that only she could express.

Losing Isaiah is the best

Losing Isaiah is the best movie that i've seen so what if Isaiah is african american and a white person wants to adopt him the way i see it is it shouldn't be about race it should be about the love and care that a child gets from the family that they are with no matter what race they are in my opinion Isaiah should have stayed with the family he was with before they moved him they were giving him the love and care that he needed and deserved. he shouldn't have went back with his natural mother he should have stayed where he was at in the first place.the place that he felt the most loved and secured that should have been his family.
