Priceless, timeless literary treasure

This collection is truly one of a kind. No other television series has been more true to the characters or stories of the original Sherlockian canon than this. Never again will such a talented, energetic cast and crew such as this be assembled (nor need they be). This is the Sherlock Holmes enthusiast's dream collection. I would pay any price for this set time and again. It is one of the most brilliant pieces of literary art you will ever own.

Spirited Away - movie DVD cover picture
An unseen gem--and one of last year's best films, period.

This movie, the (deserving) winner of an Academy Award for Best Animated Film, got far less attention than it deserved in the fall of 2002 (when Disney famously botched its release--its peak theater count was somewhere around 151 at a time when even outright flops like "Extreme Ops" could muster up more screens for a week or two). In fact, when it arrived in my town in the early part of November, there was almost no advertising, and the theater didn't even bother putting up a poster for it--and the place was packed.
And it was packed each time I went back to see it... and packed again when it returned to theaters at the end of March.
Make no mistake: This is a movie that audiences love. Don't be scared off by your preconceptions about anime, or comments like "it's too frightening for my kids." Every kid over the age of five I've seen watching this movie ends up loving it--including boys (one of them, an eight year old, ended up bouncing up and down in his seat at the end, telling his Dad, "I knew you'd like it! I told you we should see it!" How can you not like enthusiasm like that?). This isn't some sort of hyper-violent pornography--it's a movie about people doing what people do, even when those people happen to be giant frogs begging for tips. It's funny, smart, a little scary, and one of the few movies that can be called "sweet" without the added caveat "May induce severe diabetes and tooth rot."
(As for you anime fans--well, doubtless you've all seen it, and you've got your opinions. But I for one prefer this movie to "Princess Mononoke," for the simple reason that "Mononoke" is an easier film to admire and be in awe of than to actually like. "Mononoke" is more important, and definitely not a family film--but "Spirited Away" is more enjoyable. Both are must-sees.)
The only complaints that I have is that, first, Disney stuffed so many ...trailers onto the first disc (of which only three, the ones for "Kiki's Delivery Service," "Castle In The Sky," and "Finding Nemo," were of any interest to me) is that the video quality is somewhat impaired--it's a good transfer, but with some edge enhancement. Secondly, apart from the making-of special that aired on Japanese television (which gives us the rare treat of seeing Miyazaki-san at work), the extras on Disc 2 are definitely not worthy of something Disney calls "a feature-packed deluxe special edition." Only in the dreams of Disney's marketing department. There's barely more than ninety minutes of content on disc 2, and considering that 28 minutes of that is taken up entirely with trailers and commercials (which get very boring very quickly--like, say, after two or three minutes), and another 45 with the Japanese making-of special, what's left isn't really worth watching more than once. Still, Disney did at least include subtitles and the original Japanese audio, if you prefer your animation subbed, and they also were nice enough to present the movie in anamorphic widescreen (where a lot of studios would have said, "family film," and done a blah 4:3 transfer from flawed elements). This film is a must-see and a must-own.

a great movie for the jaded

A fairly unusual indie offering with mean characters. Not Hannibal type evil mean with bizarre psychological underpinnings or deep-seated childhood traumas. Just plain-jane obnoxious jerks indulging in unabashed stupidity, perversion, racism, etc. The movie may as well have been called "In the Company of Jerks". On the scale of off-beat, this is a way off, with its shoestring budget perhaps the only justification. The dialogue may irk some folks, there is a lot of it. But if you like conversations and are looking for something different to take out for a spin, this should fit the bill. Lots of long takes, fixed camera, and the music (or lack of it) is perfect to create the overall gruff feel. Worthy rental.

SCTV, Volume 1 - Network 90 (5 Disc Set) - movie DVD cover picture

SCTV Network/90 contained some of the funniest sketch comedy ever performed. I have all of the shows on betamax from their orginal airing. My Betamax player is long gone but I held on to the tapes and thought of one day trying to locate an old player to transfer them.
Pieces of this series have been thrown together and rebroadcast as 30 minute reruns on Canadian cable channels but there not the same shown out of context.
Some classics from network 90 include (not necessarily from season 1):
"The Andy Griffith Show starring Merv Griffin" with Rick Moranis as Merv. "Ouuuu, Aunt Bee's bringing us lunch!"
John Candy staring in Monster Chiller Horror Theater's presentaion of "Dr. Tounge's 3D House of Stewardesses." Don't forget to buy those 3D-Glasses from Count Floyd.
"Indira" with Indira Ghandi staring as Evita (Andrian Martin). Singing "Don't cry for me Rawalpindi"
"Perry Como, Still Alive!" Dave Thomas as a laid back Perry Como making a comeback with a Disco act. This was the clip shown at the Emmy Awards. The next year the real Perry got a special award. I think half the audience thought he was dead and the other half felt sorry for him.
And of course Bob and Doug Mckenzie, filling the CBC's requirement for "Canadian Content." Frying back bacon and drinking Molsen. How much more Canadian can you get, you hoser!

DVD Version Has Its Pros and Cons

The DVD version of Live At Pompeii has sound and visual quality that is far better then the VHS version, along with much more interview material. A lot of the film shows the band just hanging out while Adrian Maben (the director) trys to conduct a serious interview. Instead of answering his questions the band poke fun and tell him to relax and just let the conversation flow smoothly.
They have added a lot of digital scenery that wasn't in the original version, such as a lot of outer space shots of the planets swirling around, at first I was discouraged, I just wanted to see the band in action, but the scenes aren't too long and it fits the music quite well.
Unfortunatley there is very little more footage of the band working on Dark Side Of The Moon, just the same with Roger on the synth doing "On The Run" Rick on the piano for Us and Them, Dave and Roger both on Brain Damage and Eclipse. Even though they do play live in second biggest ampitheater (Colliseum the biggest) the voices are dubbed in a studio and there is signifigant footage of this. Good thing though because in those days Pink Floyd couldn't sing well at all.
All in all this is a great DVD, a must have for any Pink Floyd fan or even any concert fan.

An Excellent Film

DANG! This is one of the greatest movies of all time. It has action, comedy, drama , and a little bit of suspense. It is movie that you should show to your kids, despite the R rating for profanity. The reason is that this movie will teach lessons and inspire friendships.
SEE IT TODAY, if not tomorrow :-)
