Pre-X Files, but only better and much more exciting!!

I remember when this classic movie came out in 1980. I really enjoyed seeing the previews and what the film was all about. Surprisingly, my parents took me to see the film, and all of us really enjoyed this science fiction/conspiracy thriller classic. All of us even jumped when that alien environment suit popped out of the UFO's closet by accident. Nevertheless, the movie was in a way like an earlier version of The X-Files. Only just as better and more exciting than the series that would come some 13 years later.
Hanger 18 tells the story of how a satellite, launched by a NASA space shuttle/orbiter, collides with an Unidentified Flying Object, causing the death of an American astronaut in the process. When the UFO crashes on Earth, the U.S. Air Force and NASA recover it, and take it to a manned lunar receiving station in Texas. There, they uncover some hidden secrets that soon take the scientists by surprise. And makes the Government nervous. At the same time, two of the shuttle astronauts who witnessed the incident in space, are "blamed" for the other astronaut's death, and try to clear up the situation, by hunting for the UFO. The government tries to prevent the two from locating the UFO, but to little or no avail. That situation leads to something even more drastic made by the CIA and The Department Of Defense.
Like the classic film Capricorn One, Hanger 18 does a remarkable job of playing on the government conspiracy angle, and at the same time, deals with the ancient astronaut theory. The subplot involving the two astronauts trying to clear their names is also good, as is the storyline about the scientists trying to unlock whatever secrets are in the flying saucer.
And it also had a wonderful cats of veterans. Darren McGavin, Gary Collins, James Hampton, Pamela Bellwood, Robert Vaughn, William Schallert, Joseph Campenella, and Bill Zuckert among others. Though one wishes that James Brolin, Roy Thinnes, or Tom Berenger had been in the role played by Collins. Collins did a good job, however, if I had been the casting director, I would have picked one of those three.
Overall, a very good and entertaining film. One of the best in the hall of science fiction. If you enjoy watching the X-Files and other films about flying saucers, then you will definately enjoy this film.

This is truly In-your-Face Sci-Fi

I think by far this was put together very well, You can tell the research was done on this in some aspects such as the boot camp which it shows a good sense of realism. Everything that leads up to the actual combat scenes is a wonderful buildup of staging. I say this was very well done. It had brought back memories of my high school years and enlisting into service right after with some buddies of mine. Most movies and books that depict war usually revolves around fighting humans here, but this opens your eyes to the possibility of something even more terrible happening. This movie deserves a sequel.

Waking the Dead

I saw this movie and it was so moving and compelling, why oscars weren't nominated i do not know. After watching this film it inspired me to read the book, which is more often than not, remarkably better. Not in this case, the director kept every important detail of the book in the film, they are acurrately similar. Billy Crudup, who always moves me with his perforamces, particularly this one which his character is not able to cope with the loss of his girlfriend, played by Jennifer Connelly. After her oscar win, i hope that this doesn't mean that she will give up on low budget projects, for she is amazing in this film, the audience has a hard coping with her loss as well. If you like dramatic films, you will surely not be disappointed in this one!

Well Where Are You Tonight?

This tune mentioned and the title as well as "Gloom Despair and Agony on Me" (not included in this DVD) will bring smiles to any child of the 70s who was too young to go out on Saturday night and watched this with your family. Yes, Jr. Samples, Grandpa Jones, Minnie Pearl and Buck & Roy are all back with good old fashioned country corn. This is the first episode from 1969 and the extras only feature some other gags that already exist in this same show. The show never changed that much over the next 20 odd years, which was part of its charm. Country music fans will also be pleased to see a young Loretta Lynn and Charley Pride (singing "Kaw Liga") along for the ride, although neither of them interact with the Kornfield Kounty gang as later guests would.
People who did not see this the first time around may not "get it" or be amused at all. Your kids in particular may look at you like idiots while you laugh and smile at this. But if you remember this at all, you'll join in with the Kornfield Kounty Krew as they sing HEE HEE HEE HAW HAW HAW HEE HAW without worrying about what anyone else thinks!

An excellent movie...

Since the tragic Dec. 7. 1941 morning, the event has needed a movie to do it justice, this one has. The battle scenes were quite good and Ben Affleck, Josh Hartnett and Kate Beckinsale did an excellent job promoting the emotional side of the film. I think this nmovie is a must see event for all who feel any emotion to the fatal December day.

Can't Help but Love It!

"The Rocky Horror Picture Show" is a movie I can never grow tired of. This film is full of craziness and fun - one that never ceases to amaze me. I watch this film every Halloween when it's on television and find myself singing along and imagining myself as some of the characters. Unfortunately I have been unable to experience this film in a theater with other fellow Rocky Horror fans, but what I've seen of the viewings on tv, they are truly something to behold.
I would highly suggest this film to anyone who would like a good laugh and some great fun! You won't be disappointed!
