Poignant

Garden State is definitely one of the better movies of the year 2004. The realistic little subtleties as well as the emotional, convincing performances by Zach Braff and Natalie Portman make this movie a winner. One of a kind.

The Classic to end all Classics

This movie is without a doubt my favorite christmas movie of all time. Richard Attenbourogh(forgive my spelling)remains one of my favorite actors of all time. He was the perfect choice to portry the greatness that is Santa Clause. The actor lineup is great, the original of this movie was good, but it pales in comparison to this one. The plot is amazing, and this film just tugs at your heart, and maybe even will spark a few tears. As you see the one of the most beloved figures in history on a trial, which literally turns into a DOES SANTA CLAUSE EXIST trial. Watch as New York city and the World come together to do what Chris Cringle nows so well, how to help others. This is a great film, and one of my favorites of all time. Does Santa exist, and the films trial ending is the greatest part of all, I BELIEVE, DO YOU.

Divine Secrets of the Ya-Ya Sisterhood (Full Screen) - movie DVD cover picture
Ya Ya Voodoo At It's Best!

It all begins in a dark theatre in New York, the main character, Bolivia, (they changed her name from the one in the book) pisses off her mother with a scintillating interview about how her mom used to take naps while she defrosted chicken in the microwave! This interview is published in "Spank" magazine (also changed from the movie). Her mother, an avid reader of "Spank" reads the interview and goes into a southern outrage! She won't even speak to Bolivia! So, the Ya Ya's, an ancient group of friends join forces once again, dropping a date rape pill in Bolivia's drink, and dragging her doped up body (played by Sandra Bullock) to the nether regions of the south! This DVD has deleted scenes which are vital to the movie making sense, such as the dragon battle and the Revisionist Mermaid! It's a keeper!

The Passion of Joan of Arc - Criterion Collection - movie DVD cover picture
One of the greatest films ever made.

I would place Carl Theodore Dreyer's 'The Passion Of Joan Of Arc' right alongside of Eisenstein's 'The Battleship Potemkin' and DW Griffith's 'The Birth Of A Nation' as one of the most defining moments in the heritage of film. Told almost entirely in close-ups, Dreyer has created a film so powerful that one cannot watch it and remain unmoved. Renee Falconetti's performance as the frightened but stern Joan of Arc remains one of the greatest performances ever captured on film, able to express the most complex emotion through subtle expression. Her eyes tell the story. The DVD edition of the film is spectacular. I have seen at least three different versions of the film but i have never seen it like this. The digital restoration is magnificant and the optional audio score (Richard Einhorn's 'Voice of Light' - a beautiful orchestral and choral work inspired by the film itself) matches the work perfectly. Also included is a brief history on the film itself, including examination of it's many different versions. Even if the DVD contained nothing more then the film itself it would still be a must-buy. 'The Passion Of Joan Of Arc' is simply the most shattering and compelling silent work ever made. A true cinema milestone. You will be forever changed by this film.

Simply Hilarious

This is the funniest movie ever made period. I dont see how anyone could not laugh at the hilarious exploits of nine-year-old Ralphie and his quest for a BB Gun. While his old man shouts gibberish at the furnace and his old lady tries to get his kid brother to eat, Ralphie comes up with plan after plan, every one failing spectacularly. If you wanna see the funniest movie ever made, you gotta get this one, because you will truly laugh your pants off.

The Outlaw Josey Wales - One of the genres finest!

As stated above, "The Outlaw Josey Wales" is one of the genres finest films to ever grace the silver screen and the home theater! This Western masterpiece deserved a great DVD with as much on it as was possible to have and that goal was achieved! I wanted the DVD but also more or less had to replace the VHS copy I had due to the fact that this fine film is quite well worth repeated viewings and the good old VHS tape just didn't hold up! Off additional note with this DVD is the widescreen format. Obviously I've watched this classic many times, but with this DVD I was highly impressed seeing it for the first time in this format. It "almost" gives one the impression of seeing it for the first time.
Not only is this film blessed with Clint Eastwood in the lead role, due to differences in opinion with the original director, it is directed by him as well. Clint Eastwood, who is inarguably one of the best in the genre, fills both roles flawlessly! Along for the ride and to counterbalance Clint Eastwood's role as the gruff gunslinger is Chief Dan George. His character brought comedic relief and a more realistic portrayal of a Native American, which wasn't done often in films produced at the time this one was. One thing is for certain when viewing a Clint Eastwood western, you the viewer are always in for a great ride!
The premise:
Clint Eastwood plays Josey Wales, a poor Missouri farmer who is trying to make a living and take care of his family while the Civil War rages on. Unfortunately for his character the war comes to his front door when Kansas irregulars known as the "Red Legs" brutally attack and kill his wife and child as he bears witness. Not long after burying his wife and child he meets up with other southerners who form a guerilla group. They immediately head off to start guerilla type attacks against northern troops. Of course the south loses the war and these groups are ordered to turn themselves in. Josey Wales chooses not to turn himself in and his fear of doing so bears out. What follows from this point is, as stated above, one of the finest westerns to ever grace the silver screen.
Special Features:
Of all of the special features available on this DVD there are a couple that are quite worthy of extra mention. The 1976 Documentary "Eastwood in Action" and the 1999 Documentary "Hell Hath No Fury: The Making of The Outlaw Josey Wales". Both are quite well done and highly informative.
I highly recommend this film to all who are into this genre or those who are looking for something different and quite genuine! Most westerns aren't a western without Clint Eastwood! {ssintrepid}

Coupling - The Complete First Season - movie DVD cover picture
Blows American humor totally away

Having lived in the states since I was three, yet being of nearly 100% British heritage, I love sitting down and watching a good Britcom on Saturdays. This typically meant AYBS, Keeping Up Appearances, Waiting for God, My Hero, As Time Goes By, and so on. But, when my wife and I watched the first episode of Coupling, we both laughed our [bottoms]off! This is by far the funniest comedy I've seen in years, and this is coming from a big fan of Black Adder and Jeeves and Wooster. Every episode had us laughing in our seats, much more so than ANY American comedies, or even other Britcoms, for that matter. Coupling is simply the best written comedy I've ever seen; the humor is adult, certainly, but being 29, I find that I can easily relate with the characters. Favorite episode? "Inferno"; just watch it and you'll see why..... Don't believe me? Watch a few episodes of Coupling and you'll see what I mean!

Stagecoach - movie DVD cover picture
An all-time classic!

There is areason why this motion picture always winds up on film critics' lists of best movies -- it is one of the best movies ever made. Usually referred to as "John Wayne's big break," Stagecoach has everything that makes a Western interesting -- the horses, the conflict, the Indians, the town drunk, the gunfighter with a heart of gold, the easterner who is amazed and frightened at the West, plus the "dance hall girl" who is thrown out of town by the local morality society.
I don't know if Ford knew he was making a classic at the time he filmed this, but that's indeed what it is. The stunts alone are well worth watching the picture...including the granddaddy of all Indian-stagecoach "car chases."
Well worth watching, again and again and again. It is in black and white, but, like Ford's other B&W movies, after five minutes, you'll find yourself amazed at the richness the black and white brings to the scene.
