Pearl Jam - Touring Band 2000 - movie DVD cover picture

This is just like being at a Pearl Jam concert! Over 2 hours of music tons of favorites and some rare gems as well, and just like a real show it leaves you asking for more- songs like Black, Small Town, Imortality, Spin the Black Circle, Preasent Tense and Light Years are missing. The songs are full of energy and often have unexpected extras (like sign language and little children) in them. The montages are emotional pieces especially the Band and the Fans. RVM and Go are amazing as are Better/nothing man. Watching this put a smile on my face for the whole 3 1/2 it takes to explore the DVD. A MUST FOR ANY PEARL JAM FAN, A GREAT BUY FOR ANY MUSIC FAN, & THE BEST CHOICE FOR ANYONE ELSE. This is a great DVD.

A Shooting Star of a Sci-Fi series

I never heard of this series until it came out on DVD and was recommended by Netflix... I rented the first dvd and after watching it I cancelled the rest and promptly bought the series. It is second only to Space Above and Beyond for quality writing and characterization. I LOVED this show... I wish TV executives would encourage this type of Sci-Fi instead of the brainless crap they usually push on us. Expand you mind, buy this DVD Set for your self, then buy it for all of your friends

A Mighty Wind.... A Mightier DVD!

Christopher Guest, Harry Shearer and Michael McKean came down to Sydney, Australia for a special screening of 'A Mighty Wind' with a Q&A session afterwards. I was lucky enough to attend and was even luckier to hear the plans they had for the DVD.
First off, if you're not familiar with Christopher Guest's movies you simply have to know one thing, they are all Improvised. No script just acting on the spot. All Guest's movies (Best In Show, Waiting for Guffman) are in the style of a documentary (Mockumentary) where the storyline is plotted out before hand and the scene is just given an outcome which the actors then have to Impro. This makes the movie fresh and funny plus its what differentiates itself from other films, giving it a unique element.
The movie itself centres around when folk icon Irving Steinbloom passed away, he left behind a legacy of music and a family of performers he had shepherded to folk stardom. To celebrate a life spent submerged in folk, Irving's loving son Jonathan (BOB BALABAN) has decided to put together a memorial concert featuring some of Steinbloom's best-loved musicians.
There's Mitch & Mickey (EUGENE LEVY and CATHERINE O'HARA), who were the epitome of young love until their partnership was torn apart by heartbreak; classic troubadours The Folksmen (CHRISTOPHER GUEST, MICHAEL McKEAN and HARRY SHEARER), whose records were endlessly entertaining for anyone able to punch a hole in their center to play them; and The New Main Street Singers (featuring JOHN MICHAEL HIGGINS, JANE LYNCH and PARKER POSEY), the most meticulously color-coordinated "neuftet" ever to hit an amusement park near you.
Now, for one night only in New York City's Town Hall, these three groups will reunite and gather together to celebrate the music that almost made them famous.
Christopher Guest stated that the DVD was set to release in 6 months, making it around Christmas time or early January (Depending if Warner Bros decides to push it forward or hold it back).
The DVD is set to have feature commentary by both Christopher Guest and Eugene Levy (Writers). Also the whole 'Ode to Irving' show at New York City's Town Hall will be played in its entirety for all those fans of Folk Music out there. There will also be around an hour of Deleted Scenes (Additional Commentary), Trailer and Production Notes.
This DVD is definitely worth the buy. It may not be packed with Special features but the film itself is whats worth the money. If you loved Reiner's spin on Rock music with Spinal Tap wait till you see (if you haven't) Guest's take on Folk Music. With over 80 hours of footage shot and around 8 months to edit it, it really shows how passionate Guest is about his films and what he feels is the Creme da la Cr?me to make into a 5 star movie.
A must see movie. A must buy DVD.

Jesus of Nazareth - movie DVD cover picture
Before Mel there was Franco...

I've preferred this rendering of the story of Christ to most others ever since in was released in 1977. Others have praised the lineup of actors and performances. Zeffirelli is known for his attention to detail in both his directing and set decoration. He is a favorite of mine both for his work in film and in opera (and in opera on film) -- see the film "Tea with Mussolini" for the rest of his story.
In 1977 this film was initially castigated just a Mel Gibson's "Passion" is being attacked these days. After a special showing for ecclesiastical "elite" in NYC, most of the nay sayers disappeared.
This film is reasonably faithful to the Bible, but fills in some relationships about which the Bible is silent. The character of Judas is better developed here than simply a one dimensional traitor. It is all very interesting how the writers develop the story of Jesus against a backdrop of political unrest with the uneasy alliance between Rome and Jerusalem.
This is a better film than "Kings of Kings" or "The Greatest Story Ever Told". It is a classic of its genre and is certainly accessible by most people regardless of religious persuasion.
I wish it had not been made for the "small" screen, that it were a 16:9 aspect ratio, and that the soundtrack were 5.1 Dolby. But those are wishes, not gripes. Like other classics, we're fortunate to have what we have.

Steel Angel Kurumi - Angel on My Shoulder (Vol. 1) - movie DVD cover picture

Steel Angel Kurumi ia the beginning up a series about robots with human emotion but so much power that makes them dangerous. The star,Kurumi,is the most dangerous of the Angels that were created because of the power that her "heart" has. It's funny & has a lil bit of action too,you gotta buy it!The epoisodes are short & the whole dvd may only be 90 minutes long but it's one that by the time your done watching over and over, you'll just want to once more watch it over! When I brought Steel Angel Kurumi I didn't think it would be as good as it was,in fact I only got it because Buffy & Record of Lodoss War(which is another great anime you would love even if it does cost an unreasonable amount of money)was too much. However if I like it then I can almost bet you will too!!!

The Land Before Time - movie DVD cover picture

This movie is by far the best movie I've ever seen. I was raised on it, and today, still, I find that it's cozy animation and breathtaking musical score are the only links I have to my childhood. I could not have learned life's lessons from a better movie.
I strongly reccomend this movie to anybody and everybody. It still stands as the only movie able to jerk a tear and provoke one final thought of truth.

One of the funniest films of All Time!

This is arguably Preston Sturges best film, 'The Lady Eve' and 'Sullivans Travels' are his other masterpieces. This film is pure delight, a lot of fun and very daring for its times. Eddie Bracken is hilarious as the innocent Norval, and so are Betty Hutton and Diana Lynn. Great war-time comedy that is pure fun. Highly recommended, a guaranteed good time and great fun. If you're looking for a very funny comedy, look no further. Preston Sturges shows us he has the 'magic' touch. From a scale of 1-10 I give this movie a 9!
