Blithe Spirit - movie DVD cover picture

"Blithe Spirit" has Rex Harrison in his acerbic bachelor mode unable to get rid of either of his dead wives. Now if that's not a knock-out premise, I don't know what is, yet this film fell flat for me. This came out the same year as David Lean's other 1946 release, "Brief Encounter," but it doesn't have any of that film's elegance and style. "Blithe Spirit" feels pretty anonymous from a filmmaking standpoint.
However, this movie's strength is its writing. The screenplay is terrific, and all of the lines are delivered with such throw away dryness that I have the feeling I could watch this again and find everything funnier than I did the first time.
No quibbles with the performances, though no one is asked to stretch him/herself much. My favorite performance probably came from Kay Hammond, playing Harrison's first dead wife. Others rave about Margaret Rutherford, but I found her a bit too mannered and spastic.
I love that movies like this won Oscars for special effects. They're so quaint and fake, but you know the artists had to be so inventive to pull stuff like this off in the pre-computer era.
My most negative comments concern the quality of the DVD itself. I wholeheartedly agree with previous commenters on the horrible color and sound quality on display here. I wish the film had been in black and white, because the copy I saw was washed out and ugly. And my wife and I missed about the first 20 minutes of dialogue because of bad sound.
If you want to own a copy of "Blithe Spirit," I wouldn't buy this one. But it's fine for renting.

Memories come back

I remeber watching Labyrinth when I was about 7. Back then it seemed like a mystrious movie that I could watch over and over again. I saw it and I loved it completely. Then I forogt about this movie for almost 8 years. Just recently, 5 days ago, I had strange memories come back. I couldn't quite recall the movie, but I talked to my friends and discribed the plot. Fortunaly, one of my friends knew just what I was talking about. My memories of the movie came back. I rented, and watched. It was like going back in time. The movie is amazing and I would recommend it to just about anyone. Whether you are a music fan or not, or you like fantasy or not, you will love Labyrith. So, if you get a chance, please take a peak at it.

Refreshing and touching film!

This is an incredible film, my husband and I (we are both in our 30s) have now seen the movie three times. After the 3rd viewing I found my husband crying through the movie (never happens). It touched our hearts like no other movie has. I has such a warm family message. It teaches wonderful values and has you laughing from beginning to end. We about died when Stitch immitated Godzilla and stormed through his "San Francisco". When Stitch tried to find his family as he was a lost duckling, we were brought to tears each. You will fall in love with stitch and the whole cast. We have a stuffed Stitch and only wish we could have a real one!

A Fun and Invigarting Workout

This is a great workout! I love it! My roommate and I started out with the 1 and 2-mile walk and quickly went on to buy the 3-mile walk. We have never been much of exercisers but this workout is really easy to follow and stick with. Although Leslie is a little "chatty" she makes the walk go by so quickly. Before you know it you are done. The video is easy to adjust to fit you. I would recommend this video to anyone who wants to loose some weight and also stay/get in shape.

One of the most enjoyable musicals I have seen.

I was never a huge musical fan, but this movie changed my mind. It has everything- light heartedness, sadness, a sweet and simple love story. I found the ballet a little overwhelming, but interesting both as a dance, and as an imaginative use of French painters' work. Each section of the ballet is in the style of a different painter: Dufy, Renoir, Lautrec, Van Gogh, etc., choreographed by Kelly, who does an incredible job. The movie has something that makes you able to watch it again and again--if only for the exuberance of I Got Rhythm and 'SWonderful.

This movie has great choreography and martial arts moves by Let Li. I, myself, am a grandmaster of 5 different martial arts. However, the choreography is even beyond my own creativity levels, and the strength and speed of Jet Li even surpasses my own!

The adventures of Kai-Kui (Kevin Chan) continue!

Among all of the American releases of Jackie Chan films, this one is the best. Though it is the third chapter of the "Police Story" series, the tone is much different from the first two. Jackie directed the first two and they are surprisingly really intense. Sure, there are some funny bits, but the action is razor sharp and Jackie gets really pissed off several times. In "Supercop" the tone is much lighter, maybe due to the direction by Stanley Tong. But don't get me wrong, this film is still great entertainment. Jackie and Michelle Yeoh (Billed as Michelle Khan) make a great team and trade stunts right and left. The final chase scene involving an armoured car, Chan hanging from a ladder of a speeding helicopter, Michelle jumping onto a moving train with a motorcycle, and the two of them taking down thugs on top of the train is something to behold. Maggie Cheung also returns again as Jackie's girlfriend.

Touchez Pas au Grisbi - Criterion Collection - movie DVD cover picture

The great Jean Gabin is world weary, elegant, elder crime king pin Max in Jacques Becker's understated 1954 TOUCHEZ PAS AU GRISBI (Criterion).

The title literally translates "Hands off my loot!" But it's all about the details and relationships that are peripheral to the aftermath of big bullion heist that Max has just pulled off. His plan is to retire with his pretty young girlfriend, but when long time not so smart partner Riton brags to his two timing moll Josy (Jeanne Moreau), Max is sucked back into the world he helped create and can never leave.

Becker died in obscurity in 1960, but over time his reputation has grown. This once forgotten gem is now recognized as a near perfect touchstone of the crime genre and it looks brand new in pristine black and white.

Extras include interviews and essays and a TV documentary. It would be nice if the subtitles were in yellow, but that is a small complaint for a terrific film.

Superb Popcorn Movie

Good stuff all around here. No, it's not Kurosawa or Lean or anything like that, but wow, that scene at the school . . . wow. It got my blood flowing just as well as Braveheart or Gladiator did. Be forewarned, however - every character gets a little bit of time in this one, and if you're walking into this one without having seen the first one and/or being unfamiliar with the X-Men universe, you might have trouble keeping tabs on who's who.
Very, very well done sequel with lots of excitement, stellar special effects, and some actual emotional resonance to the story. A great ensemble cast, too, and it's great to see them give Mystique (Rebecca Romijn-Stamos) more screen time. Kelly Hu seemed to be the only person with nothing to do.
Oh well, time to wait for the third one now. I think we should call it "Rise, Phoenix, Rise."
