One that YOU can watch over and over again!

OK, call me selfish, but when looking for a DVD for my son to watch, I am hoping to find something that I can watch over and over again without going crazy. This is it. I love the bear, the big blue house, and all of his friends (coincidentally, so does my son). This one has great messages for kids about bedtime even when you don't want to sleep, the importance of breakfast, cleaning the house, and naptime!

Works Wonderfully On Many Levels

If you are an artist, as I am, this film is so envelope pushing on blending the real world with the animated world that you can shut off the sound and just watch it. It is worth the money right there because you have never seen a film that looks like this. And you even get to see a special feature with the inventor of the process working with his drawing tablet and computer monitor so you can learn how it is done. My husband, who hates animation, loved this because he noticed right away how much more real world everyone looked. Next, if you like the kind of film that explores quirky characters and ideas with lots of conversation, this film contains that in spades. It reminded me a bit of "My Dinner with Andre" in that respect. So even when you turn on the sound, there is still a movie that many people will enjoy. There is no other plot per se as this is a film about ideas and daily life albeit in a university setting. Linklater, the director, is notorious for having made "Slackers" as his first film. Some viewers will compare this film to "Slackers" saying it is a more adult version of that film. In its quirkiness, it does resemble "Slackers." However, "Slackers" was only a mild nudge of the envelope whereas "Waking Life" is a full blast push off the cliff. I bought this film after seeing it. There was no way I was going to be caught without my own copy if it went out of release. That kind of says it all.

Vincent's Finest Hour? I Think It Might Be!

"Pit And The Pendulum" is definitely one of those "watch it late at night with the lights out during a thunderstorm" kind of motion pictures. All the elements are present here to elicit the appropriate "scary movie" emotions from the viewer -- Shock, terror, suspense, fright, uneasiness, and fear. (And maybe a few others as well.)
The setting of this 1961 film couldn't have been better presented on screen if they had tried. And Vincent Price, who was 50 years of age when the film was first released, gives a lively performance as "Don Nicholas Medina", a man who is slowly but surely going out of his mind.
The climactic scene in the "Pit" is simply astonishing. One of the best scenes in any horror film ever made!
This MGM DVD contains a Widescreen version of this color film (2.35:1 ratio). And, although not an Anamorphic (enhanced for 16x9 TV sets) disc, this DVD still offers up better-than-average video quality. The audio is Dolby Digital Mono (English and French tracks). Plus: this cover art is exceptional.
A few bonus items are on the disc, including a fun audio commentary by Director Roger Corman. The Original Theatrical Trailer and an "Original Theatrical Prologue" are also included here.
Before his death on October 25, 1993 (at age 82), Vincent Price appeared in 127 feature films (plus hundreds and hundreds of TV shows and radio plays) --- with "Pit And The Pendulum" being one of his very best, in my view.
If you like scary, atmospheric motion pictures, you have no choice but to be entranced when watching this DVD of "Pit And The Pendulum".

Loved by mom and daughter!

I bought this DVD for my 2-year-old daughter but found myself lost in nostalgic memories of my own childhood, when I watched these as individual tales. The charming stories of friendship between very different creatures are entertaining, and also nice springboards for discussions with little ones. It's remarkably quiet and old-fashioned compared to many of today's options for children, which I love! It's pleasant background noise while I get a few things done, but also a DVD I will just as often will sit and watch with my child. The video itself is the most enjoyable item on the DVD. The "A Day for Eeyore" is not the "classic" it claims to be, poorly drawn and with a voice-over for Pooh not even reminiscent of the original. The sing-a-long and game are favorites of my daughter as well. The songs are classics you will be surprised you can sing with. Be ready to "fast-forward" through the "Heffalumps and Woozles" if your children are very small.

Neil Gaiman's Neverwhere - movie DVD cover picture
Better than the book

I was a little wary of watching this series after reading the book. I loved Gaiman's Sandman series, and have read all of his other books. I wasn't a big fan of Neverwhere when I read it, though. It was just a little too slow for me. This tv series, however, gave me a new appreciation of the story. Although you can tell it was made on a low budget, that doesn't detract from the greatness of the story. I think that with recent movies like the Matrix and Star Wars, we've lost our appreciation for a good story and expect every movie to blow us away with their cool special effects. Unfortunately, those kind of movies don't usually have great stories to accompany their expensive effects. I don't think Gaiman's stories need expensive effects. I love the idea that homeless people aren't just the vagrants people think they are... that they have a whole other society and "talents". One thing bothered me through the whole show. I kept trying to figure out where I had heard the name Marquis de Carabas before. As it turns out, Gaiman explains in the special feature interview, that the name comes from the fairy tale Puss In Boots. It's the name Puss gives when asked who his master is. Anyway, this is a great series with an excellent story to tell.

Almost Perfect

I love this film (and the book that inspired it). It's a great true-life story which explains why reality is so much more inspiring and fulfilling than fiction. I disagree with the amazon reviewer who didn't care for the narration style and nostalgic glimpses into the time period via film footage and photographs. To me, it made the experience more evocative, as you get a definite sense of place, which is so often missing when today's filmgoers have little knowledge of history and just how important some things can be given a certain place, time, attitude. The documentary style inserts work beautifully. The only mistake the filmmakers' made, I think, are in not showing actual film footage of Seabiscuit's races, and other film on the horse, say during the closing credits. Instead one has to look at actual documentaries.

A Classic

It's true; the Pink Panther cartoons look old. It's also true that they ARE old. This is how they were made, and it's also how they were meant to be seen. We should simply enjoy them for what they are, which is a series of outstanding short animated films.
