Riveting! A movie you think about for days after you see it

GLADIATOR is absolutely riveting, capturing your attention immediately! This DVD has earned a spot on my shelf to stay.
First off, the recreation of battles, Roman army camps, and ancient Rome are abolutely amazing! Stunning! Extremely well directed too.
Secondly, if you are squeemish, the bloody battle scenes will bother you -- but the story is good enough that you still may want to see it anyway, even if you have to cover your eyes at times! The violence is not gratuituous in nature -- it illustrates the barbaric nature of things back in that century and is actually an important part of the story as a whole.
Maximus, the main character, is a person with high moral standards who ends up being kidnapped and sold as a slave ... eventually he ends up a gladiator. I don't want to give away any more of the story, there are surprising details. Let's just say that you root for Maximus through the film. I'll also say one thing, I watched parts of it with tears streaming down my face. This film will touch you to the core and you will think about it for days!

Memento (Limited Edition) - movie DVD cover picture
The Best Psychological Thriller Ever!

When the creditS came up on this film I was left speechless for ten minutes. From the outstanding screenplay, to the Oscar worthy acting and cinematography, Memento is what movies are supposed to be! Memento is the tale of a man who lost his wife, and short term memory when they were both attacked by intruders in their house. The husband, Lenny, then desperately tries to find the second killer who the police do not even believe exists. Lenny's condition makes it impossible for him to generate new memories. Instead he must rely on tatoos, pictures and notes that he writes to remind himself of the clues he finds. Yet are the clues real, or is he being manipulated into killing the wrong person? The film is shot from the ending and scene by scene it goes backwards until the beginning is reached. Never before have I ever seen a film this incredible. Memento is rated R for some strong violence, nudity, strong language, sensuality and drug use. This film is meant for mature audiences only and might be too intense for most crowds. For anyone who is tired of the relentless junk that Hollywood is sending out these days, Memento is proof that great films can still be made without a budget the size of the Titanic.

Midhunters Will Keep You Hanging!

Mindhunters is about a group of FBI profilers who go on an island to do training and their final shot at not getting cut. The group gets dropped off on the island by their boss to solve a fake murder scene. Shortly after arriving, people are being picked off by traps set up to kill people according to their profile. Kind of hard to explain, watch the movie and it will unravel it all. I watched it on the computer, i dunno why it aint in theaters yet then. Pretty weird...the movie will surely keep you on the edge of your seat. The ending will blow you away. I highly recommend it!!!!

It's lack of love scenes was not a minus

This movie is, first of all, something I don't think could ever be made in America. Why? Because America would want more action and more romance and more of everything that this movie has and "fails to deliver". I've seen some French movies that were poor and this one doesn't fall into that category. Part of what I liked about this movie was it's simplicity and it's honor. Yes, Olivier Martinez does come across as superhuman as everyone around him succumbs to cholera and he wanders unscatched from every death scene, but it made me keep watching, just to see who this man was and where he came from and what he was supposed to be doing. I liked the fact that the movie portrayed Juliette Binoche and Olivier Martinez's infatuation in such a simple, uncomplicated way. I liked the ending of the movie and how they kept everything open. It was nice to see people on the silver screen facing "real life rejection" as well, which is something few American films fail to portray, if the candy coated glossed over version of the powerful psychological film "Abre Los Ojos" is any example. Tom, I'm willing to just pretend that didn't happen. Anyway, you should watch this film, if only to sit there and grind your teeth and be frustrated over it. At least you are grinding your teeth over something.

FireFox - A true Eastwood classic!

Directing and starring in this classic spy thriller from the eighties is Clint Eastwood, more generally known as the gruff "Man With No Name" in several spaghetti westerns and American westerns of his own direction. In "FireFox," Eastwood takes on a more modern and quite different role for himself, playing a former Air Force pilot who is still suffering from some rather horrific personal demons. In the genre of spy/thriller films, Eastwood's name comes to the top in this classic that is arguably one of the best! Although the pacing of this film is slightly off, I believe that to be intentional and it adds to the suspense that is inherent to the plot and a sure sign of skill on the director's part.
The premise:
Clint Eastwood plays former Air Force pilot Mitchell Gant who was shot down over Viet Nam and captured. The American and British governments have learned of a new Soviet fighter plane that will ultimately tip the scales of balance to the hand of the Soviets and decide to steal the plane with the help of the Russian Jews who have been forced to design and build it. Given Gant's heritage, a Russian mother who taught him the language and the necessity of being able to speak Russian, the American government calls him back into service.
What follows from there is an extraordinarily intriguing and suspenseful plot that compels the viewer through the story as we see Gant make his way into the Soviet Union and on his way to the airbase in which he must infiltrate and steal this ultimate weapon of war. Of particular note is how well the characterizations of the Russians were played out and believable. I've never been to Russia and I don't pretend to know how things were there during the cold war and pre-glasnost but through Eastwood's direction and the actors efforts, they quite easily bring about a "suspension of disbelief" in the story.
One minor "gripe" would be in the beginning of the movie when Gant is going through a flashback and they show him flying an F-4 Phantom and then an F-105 Thud and then roll back to the Phantom, two very distinct and different aircraft. Simply because they both had the same camouflage scheme does not mean they're the same planes and directors "should" pay closer attention to these details. While this was a minor distraction for myself, it in no way detracts from the films overall plot.
Overall, "FireFox" is worth every penny and I highly recommend this DVD as an honored addition to your DVD collection! {ssintrepid}

Wonderful movie with a grat message

A friend of mine recommended this movie to me because she knew how much I enjoyed nature films. I rented it and was very happy with it. The baby tigers are absolutely adorable, and the message this movie sends is a great one.

And as for it being for young kids, no, it's not. These tigers don't talk in cute little voices and there are no musical numbers, but responsible parents would already know that. There are some very troubling episodes in the movie that depict animal cruelty- definitly something small children wouldn't understand. This movie was marketed towards kids, and that was a big mistake, but a responsible parent would make sure there was nothing objectionable in the movie before showing it to their young children.

A Film, Not a Movie

Okay, for those of you who are close-minded and think stuff like this is "pretensious," you need to stick to your George Lucas computer generated extravaganzas. Now, for the rest of us, we like this film because Bunuel blurs the line between reality and our subconscious, because the acting is good (in that '60s European way), and because it is at once art and entertainment. What we see in this film is the conflict between middle-class marriage and the limitations of fidelity, and perhaps a distinction between physical love and a more profound, abstract spiritual love. The final moments of the film can evoke some profound emotions whether you can make any sense of the film or not--those haunting dream scenes with the horse carriage, the confrontation at the beach, and many other elements all emerge in an intensly moving and satisfying ending. If you really want a pretensious movie, try 'Eyes Wide Shut,' which concentrates on similar themes, and works in similar ways, but does so much less successfully (and, it is pointless to call a Kubrick film "pretensious," anyway.) This is NOT for mainstream film goers, simply because most of them don't watch movies from pre-2000 and complain about subtitles, and complain xenophobically that the French are snobs, while others more informed may legitimately object to a somewhat easy plot or confuse unconventional narrative development for "slow pacing." Despite all of that, I recommend this as an extremely original film that can be thought-provoking, intellectual, and artsy, as well as escapist, entertaining, and accessible.
