One of the best this year

This is a wonderfully written/directed/produced film. It seems very realistic and is exciting, even for non sports fans. The coach is especially well-played and the acting is very good, most of the actors i've never heard of! This movie shows the process of picking the players(I feel so bad for the last guy that gets cut!), the TOUGH training, and, of course, the games. They are portrayed so it seems like you're watching a game on TV. I'm sorry, but i DON'T agree with the lady that only gave it 2 stars!

He writes crazy small!

This movie wanted to be Ferris Bueller, but it didn't quite make it. It could have been better, but the script just didn't make it. I have no doubt that the cast was up to the challenge, but the solutions some of the characters used to get out of their situations were just stupid ("I'll take the test RIGHT NOW!" while ripping his shirt off? Why is this funny?). I would have found the movie a lot funnier if the schemes the students were up to came across as something that could even remotely work. This movie comes across as a story written for 6th graders by a 6th grader.

What a great movie!

What a rush! This is one of the best movies I have seen in a very very long time. I will not bother giving a synopses for the movie, but I will tell you what I loved. The movie has a great theme, that of a man seeking to atone for his sins. In the end, he finds the means to forgive himself through the help of another man, Kasamoto and his culture. Granted, there are several historial inaccurate items, but that does not stop this from being a great and enjoyable movie.
Tom Cruise name might get first billing for this movie, but Ken Watanabe steals the show as the honourable Kasamoto. He has rightly been honoured with a Academy Awards nomination. If anything, watch the movie for him!

Outstanding Movie

This wasn't just a boxing movie, it was a full scale drama that certainly puts Rocky to shame. Actor James Marshall did a super job in the lead role of Tommy Reilly; and the rest of the cast was likewise excellent, Jon Seda in particular.

Kingpin Rules!

By far the best and funniest of the Farelly Brothers films, the overlooked Kingpin features a lot of laughs and a truly excellent soundtrack. Woody Harrelson plays Roy Munson, a once promising bowler whose career is cut short along with his right arm. Randy Quaid plays Ishmael, an unworldly Amish man whose one vice is bowling. After being down and out for several years Munson convinces Ishmael to enter a $1 million winner take all bowling tournament in Reno. Roy and Ishmael hustle their way across the country from Pennsylvania. Along the way they hook up with the beautiful Claudia played by Vanessa Angel. Bill Murray plays top professional bowler Ernie McCracken. McCracken is a total scumbag who is largely responsible for Munson's misery. This movie is loaded with laughs with most gags hitting the mark. By the end of the movie, if you have any heart at all, you will find yourself rooting for Roy and Ishmael. My only complaint is that the home version contains added scenes that were best left edited out of the movie.

artful and true

AKA is writer/director Duncan Roy's thought-provoking memoir of his own youth. He escaped from a brutal, sexually abusive working-class household by assuming the identity of a young aristocrat and became famous - or notorious - in the process.

Mr. Roy's movie is brilliantly written, directed, and cast. Matthew Leitch is perfect as Dean, the handsome, sweet, innocently seductive young man who desperately wants a better or, to be more precise, another life. His intelligence, looks, charm, and manner make people want to believe he is who he says. All the actors are notable and entertaining. Two are exceptional: Diana Quick as the prickly patrician Lady Gryffoyn, whose son Dean impersonates; and George Asprey as the striking, urbane, aristocratic who takes Dean under his wing.

Aside from the fascinating story, imaginative photography done solely with available light, and perfect musical support, AKA is a scathing portrayal of the English class system, where aristocrats rely on certain cues (accent, name, manners, schooling, demeanor) to identify one another and preserve their exclusivity. Dean lives as 'one of them' successfully and happily for over a year. After which he says, quite truthfully if Mr. Roy's portrait of Alexander Gryffoyn is in any way accurate, that he was a better Lord Gryffoyn than the real one could ever be. Mr. Roy depicts a working class equally complicit in maintaining 'place' and limited social mobility.

After watching the single screen version, the three-screen triptych version, as it was released theatrically, is a wonderful complement which adds dimension to the story. Mr. Roy's commentary is illuminating politically and enlightening cinematically. This is a very personal work of art. The entire ensemble is outstanding, but the talent and beauty of Matthew Leitch bring it all together.

Bette Davis wonderful is classic weepie

With the release of such classics as "The Wizard of Oz," "Gone with the Wind," and "Mr. Smith Goes to Washington," "Dark Victory" certainly backs up the argument that 1939 was the greatest year in motion pictures. 1939 also proved to be the greatest year in the career of America's greatest screen actress, Miss Bette Davis. "Dark Victory" is certainly the highlight of the four films released starring Davis. If you think about it, the story is very simple. It is no more than a tale of a well-to-do socialite who contracts a disease and dies. Nothing special, and you would think it sounds rather uninteresting. However with both great direction and a superb cast, "Dark Victory" ranks as one of the greatest tear-jerkers ever put on screen. A must see!

Stunningly Beautiful Movie!

I just came back from watching a sneak preview of this movie, and I was blown away. This movie was so moving and touching. The chemistry Ryan Gosling and Rachel McAdams had was felt throughout. This is definitely Ryan Gosling's breakout film! This movie would make one long for the love that was portrayed. I loved the way they tied in the present and the past through the eyes of James Garner and Gena Rowlands. I can't wait to read Nathan Spark's book, which this movie is based on. And yes, there were more than a few sniffles coming from the audience. . . some even from the guys. Highly recommended movie.
