X-Men - movie DVD cover picture
One of the best movies of the year!

I was not expecting much from this film, as I have been a dedicated X-Men fan for years and thought that any film wouldn't do justice to the comics or the old Fox t.v. show, but boy was I wrong! Everything about this movie is perfect! Not only is it filled with action, but the character development is incredible, the plot is totally believable (unlike those ridiculous Batman films) and at times it is comical and even heart-warming. Hugh Jackman (Wolverine) is amazing! He's almost more like Wolverine than the actual comic Wolverine. His scenes with Rogue (Anna Paquin) are so touching, and some of my favorites of the movie. Patrick Stewart was *born* to play Professor X and James Mardsen (Cyclops) and Famke Jannsen (Jean Grey) also make the roles their own. The villians are awesomeas well, even though several of them were not known for their acting abilities before this. I was so impressed with this film that I saw it five times in the theaters, dragging different friends to it each time. None of them had known what the X-Men were before then, but after seeing the movie, each of them absolutely LOVED it. I think that this year, only the movie Gladiator surpassed X-Men in quality. And the DVD is a wonderful tribute to a wonderful film. I recommend this to anyone who likes movies, because this is the type of film that can definitely be enjoyed by everyone!

Return of the Dragon - movie DVD cover picture
Bruce Lee's best

This is perhaps the best martial arts (from a basic, pure karate perspective) movie, from the man who had started the whole martial arts revolution on screen and made it a household name. There are probably many martial artists who are, and were better than Bruce Lee, but no one compares to him when it comes to understanding the arts and how to project it on screen. His sense of choreographing fight scenes is still unmatched in the world of cinematic martial arts. This is the one simple reason what makes 'Return of the Dragon' the best of Lee's movies. The climatic battle scene with Chuck Norris remains the best-choreographed karate demonstration on screen, so far. He was perhaps the only true movie martial artist who could take of his shirt and have the male audience want a body like him. Like, 'Enter the Dragon', this movie didn't have a host of big-name martial arts stars like Jim Kelly, Yang Ze, and others. It had a relatively unknown Chuck Norris (to the rest of the world) after his reign as a seven-time US Karate champion, but the movie did make Norris a household name. Return of the Dragon remains Lee at his best, without all the glamor and high budget extravaganza of Enter the Dragon. If you like Bruce Lee, and martial arts, the buck stops here.

Zero Stars for Amazon Customer Service

Is it just me or has anyone else noticed that Amazon's once proud world class customer service that sparked a revolution in the online world is no more?

Once upon a time, it was such a pleasure to order from Amazon. DVD's would arrive on the day they were released in local stores, obviating the need to get in your car and waste precious time and gas.

No more. Now you are lucky to get your DVD a week later.

Case in point is my order for Lemony Snicket's. Order Placed: March 20, 2005. DVD released: April 26 2005. DVD shipped by Amazon: May 2nd 2005 after I emailed and complained.

I bought into the Prime membership because I thought that would speed the delivery, but, what is the point of paying in advance for 2 days service if they don't even ship the DVD for a week after it is released?

When I wrote to them, do you know what they told me? The following is a direct quote from their email: "On researching your order, I see that Lemony Snicket's A Series of Unfortunate Events has proven to be a very popular item. Please note that this item has already entered the shipping process on April 30, 2005 and we expect your order will arrive within two business days of the ship date. We have many customer orders for this item, and we've just begun receiving copies from our suppliers. We are filling orders as quickly as we can on a first-come, first-served basis".

Yes... it took between April 30th to May 2nd for it to find its way "the shipping process". There were thousands available at the local Target this weekend. Should have bought it from them. What a bunch of bunk.

What a shame. Amazon R.I.P.

No star was brighter than Doris Day, and it's about time that more of her movies were released on DVD! Every movie on this set is fabulous and you get to see that Doris Day can do anything, and do it better than anyone else. Comedy, drama, musical you name it it's on these movies. I have two wishes, one is that April 26 comes fast, and that more of Doris's gems will be coming out on DVD, soon!

Napoleon Dynamite - movie DVD cover picture
Flippin sweet film!

I am compelled to write this review because I'm so bummed by the one star reviews and harsh words of some other reviewers. I must defend Napoleon! This is my favorite movie of 2004, possibly my favorite movie ever. I am an educated, intelligent, mother of three. My 12-year old daughter and I are crazy about Napoleon Dynamite-every time we watch it, we are doubled over with laughter. I suspect this is one of those movies you either love or hate, there's no middle ground. If mainstream humor is more to your taste (I'm thinking Austin Powers or, uh, I don't know, that kind of thing), maybe you should skip ND. But if you want to watch something subtle yet side-splitting, off-kilter but sweet and safe to watch with your kids, this is your movie.

How did they get those shots!

I bought this DVD for my Dad for Christmas. It is a fantastic documentary on the migration of birds, mainly ducks, around the world. It is incredible. There was no computer enhancment used. I wonder how they got some of the shots. It is a ducks eye view. There are some disturbing moments, habitat destruction, but even that has a hauntingly beautiful, bittersweet quality.

Andrei Rublev - Criterion Collection - movie DVD cover picture
A masterpiece given due, regal trappings by Criterion

A monumental work - the definitive film on the creative impulse and the consequential search for perfection (masterfully framed as the story of a 14th century monk). From its haunting, seemingly incongrous beginning (think of it as a "visual overture", synopsising the film's themes much like an opera's overture does for its musical motifs) to its devastating ending, Rublev is awe inspiring in its depth, scope, and artistry. A sometimes difficult film whose rewards go beyond today's most extravagant expectations out of film. Its imagery and final claim haunt me, informing my thoughts and responses.

The Temptations - movie DVD cover picture
"Get Ready" for a truly good video

In virtually every aspect that "The Jacksons: An American Dream" fails, "The Temptations" suceeds. All five of the actors portraying the "classic" version of the Temps are excellent, especially Charles Malik Whitfield, D.B. Woodside, and Leon. The scene where David Ruffin (Leon) discovers that he has been voted out of the group will leave many of you on the verge of tears.
Additionally, the music was (of course) excellent, and the right songs all fell in the right places (especially "Papa Was a Rolling Stone).
Definitely worth your money and time.
