On the Waterfront (Special Edition) - movie DVD cover picture
One of the best movies ever made

This is, by any standard, one of the best movies ever made. Brando plays Terry Malloy, a young dock worker who gets involved - against his will - with the mob, via a labor union. He finds himself struggling with his conscience after he inadvertently plays a role in a mob "hit". He tries to tell himself that keeping quiet is a matter of protecting himself - after all, Johnny Friendly, the mob boss (Lee J. Cobb) likes him and makes sure he gets work.
His conscience bothers him even more when he finds himself falling for the victim's sister, Edie (Eva Marie Saint). Then Father Barry (Karl Malden), a gutsy parish priest stands up to the mob when no one else will do so. He encourages Terry to tell what he knows. Terry doesn't want to go against his brother Charlie (Rod Steiger), who is a close associate of the mob boss.
Terry must choose between good (as represented by Edie and Father Barry) and evil (as represented by Friendly and Charlie). Choosing good involves enormous risk, even to his own life, but can he live with himself if he chooses evil? Terry's testimony would put the mob on the ropes and protect innocent workers, but at what cost to Terry? (Also noteworthy - in a moral sense - are the crowds, who stand firmly behind whoever seems to have the upper hand!)
For all of its non-glamourous, gritty reality, this movie boasts an all-star cast. Even small roles are played by the likes of Martin Balsam, Pat Hingle, and a very young Fred Gwynne. It was shot in black and white, perhaps to underscore its moral message. Brando's Malloy emerges as a hero, standing alone among the dock workers (although supported by Edie and Father Barry) against corruption and greed.
This is not only good movie-making, it is responsible movie-making. How often do you see a movie in which the main character decides to do the right thing simply because it is the right thing? All of the performances are excellent and the message is one that needs to be repeated in every generation. This movie gets my highest recommendation.

Great Follow up

I think this is a five star follow up to the original Dieux Du Stade film. The guys are gorgeous, the settings are colorful and there's enough beefcake in this edition to satisfy everyone!

Good Tarzan Film. Better than most.

This film is underrated, while it does deviate from the original author's storyline (what film doesn't) it remains more true to Edgar Rice Burroughs' TARZAN OF THE APES than any other Tarzan film I have seen, right down to Tarzan's learning French from his mentor as he nursed the French Lieutenant's injuries. The jungle footage was magnificent and respected the original story. Once in England, it took a left turn from Burrough's story but stayed in the spirit as well as showing you the perspective of Tarzan's heart. I am pleased.

The Matrix Reloaded (Full Screen Edition) - movie DVD cover picture
Back into the Matrix...

The film picks up from where The Matrix left off and continues to shed light on Neo and his quest to save humanity. This time new characters are introduced and the plot thickens...
Keanu Reeves, Carrie-Anne Moss, Lawrence Fishburne, Hugo Weaving, Monica Bellucci (WOW!!!), and the rest of the cast have truly outdone themselves with their performances, which are exceptional to say the least! All the actors, without exceptions, give it their 100% and it really shows (the chemistry is AMAZING)! Very well written and very well presented, the movie is without a doubt one that can be watched over and over again.
The plot, the setting, the SPECIAL EFFECTS, the music, and the battle scenes are all EXCELLENT! The Matrix Reloaded is guaranteed to provide for an evening's entertainment. In addition, it is one of those films that gets you and keeps you thinking long after it's over.
In conclusion, the film establishes a GREAT cliffhanger for next movie in line: The Matrix Revolutions!

Lovely Movie

My husband and I were very surprised at how well done this movie is. It's a good story line, has great singing, is non-violent and humorous. I had been putting off buying it just because I thought it was going to be a sappy love story and it just isn't.

A response to Lawrence J. Gubas "not so oldtimer":

Firstly, I have never seen this DVD. I am basing this reply on the live performance of the Harem Tour I attended this evening. I may have given the DVD a lower rating depending on video/audio recording quality, had I seen it.

Just this evening I saw Sarah Brightman live in Norfolk, Virginia in her Harem concert. I have to say that I completely disagree with you concerning Sarah Brightman's performance. Of course, there is always a difference between seeing something live and seeing it on a television screen, but regardless, I found the concert to be one of the best I have seen anywhere (on stage or otherwise). Again I need to contradict you. First of all, if you consider Sarah Brightman's costumes "outlandish," then you should take a look at Cher. Secondly, all the costumes used the same base pieces and then added a cloak or over-piece to create a certain mood for several songs. And no expression? I understand that these are two different performances we're talking about, but I doubt that Sarah Brightman would have put more effort into a concert in Norfolk than into one in Las Vegas. I have heard her perform most of these pieces on various recordings, and Sarah Brightman's voice sounds even more breathtaking and inflective live than on any recording, including "The Andrew Lloyd Webber Collection," which I've had for several years.

Gamera Comes Back

First, you must be a fan of this Genre'. With that understood, this new take on the old "Gamera vs. Gaos" movie is truely a 5-star effort.
The special effects were suprisingly good. Still using rubber suits and beutifully detailed models, this movie keeps the old charm. And now, the tasteful use of Digital effects for Gamera's Fire Ball Breath and Jets, brings this movie into the nineties.
It is enjoyable and fun for kids young and old. I recommend it highly to all fans.

Joan of Arc - movie DVD cover picture
"I AM THE MAID" - "Never Underestimate The Power Of A Myth"

LeeLee Sobeiski is absolutely magnificent as Joan of Arc, the long prophesied 'Maid of Lorraine' who would reunite a divided French nation and lead them to victory and freedom against foreign invasion (the British). While there may be a few historical accuracies in this film, they are more than compensated for with the loving and respectful way in which the material is treated. It successfully accomplishes the difficult task of both providing a wonderful action/adventure film while at the same time serving as an inspirational, spiritual docu-drama.

This is such an emotional, heartfelt production. Even after numerous viewings I'm still moved to tears several times during each viewing. While 'Joan of Arc' boasts a formidable, all-star cast, Peter O'Toole, Powers Boothe, Jacqueline Bisset, Peter Strauss and more, the two greatest performances are those of LeeLee and Chad Willett as her friend and military companion Jean de Metz. From the moment of their first encounter when Joan is just beginning on her spiritual journey to her tragic burning on the stake, Jean is forever by her side. Their bond of mutual admiration and unspoken love is the glue that ties the storyline together so perfectly.

What an incredible directorial job by Christian Duquay! This may be a made-for-television movie, but you would never know it by the production values; cinematography, special effects, soundtrack and acting couldn't have been better. 'Joan of Arc' is without a doubt one of my all-time favorite films.
