One of the best!

This DVD set is truly massive! After watching the extra half hour of footage, you will wonder how they ever did without it! The "making of" discs are extremely in-depth and informative and gives you an entirely new perspective and appreciation for the effort and talent that went into creating this masterpiece. Bottom Line: The new footage plus the huge amount of extras makes this a DVD fit for a movie of this caliber.

Absolute Beginners - movie DVD cover picture
Visually Stunning Musical Directed by Julien Temple

When you watch the opening sequence from ABSOLUTE BEGINNERS, the first thought that might come to your mind is that it's shot a lot like Janet Jackson's "When I Think of You" video. There is a reason for that -- they were both directed by Julien Temple. His background as one of the top music video directors comes to good use here. All of the musical sequences are superbly staged and choreographed. As an added benefit, you get a rare chance to see both Sade and R&B pioneer Slim Gaillard perform in a motion picture. Sade is absolutely stunning as she sings "Killer Blow," a song which she also co-wrote. The soundtrack is filled with other great songs including Slim Gaillard's "Selling Out," "Having it All" (performed by Patsy Kensit), "That's Motivation" and the title cut. The latter two songs were performed by David Bowie. In terms of plot, the makers of the film took a big chance by going beyond the basic boy-meets-girl story found in most classic musicals. The romance is still there, but it also attempts to deal with some serious social issues, including the gentrification of a community. For the most part the film succeeds in its somewhat lofty ambitions. Overall, the cast gives credible, if somewhat broad performances, but this is to be expected within the musical genre. An initial hurdle for American audiences will be to decipher the thick British accents. However, with the second viewing that shouldn't be a problem, particularly given the fact that this release comes closed captioned. Thank God for closed captioning! I previously purchased the earlier, non-captioned version, but because the film has been so popular with my friends, I had no choice, but to buy a second copy. You know how it is when you loan things, sometimes it takes a l-o-n-g time to get things back -- especially with a movie as entertaining as this one. Rather than keep waiting, I simply purchased another copy (now with closed captioning) and I'm so glad I did. If you're looking for a musical with something on it's mind, you need to look no further. You will also be hard pressed to find a musical as visually stunning as this one with great music to match. This all for just a bit more than the price of a movie ticket. In short, ABSOLUTE BEGINNERS is an absolute must see.

'..ottin', my ol' forty four...'

We bought this, along with other English-language videos, so that our two young sons can keep up their English while attending German schools. After all (as I've observed), TV (not schools) is the reason that English is so widespread and better-spoken in Scandinavia than elsewhere in Europe. This video was played so often (consequently driving one of their older half-sisters nuts) that it should be worn out by now. Both boys soon could sing all the songs in it, in sequence. It was later succeeded in popularity by Melody Ranch. Some other recommendations: Popeye (cartoons and movie), Midway, Lonesome Dove, Bugs Bunny and Porky Pig, and, from the German side, Die Augsburger Puppinkist.

Maybe the only Broadway Musical Video you'll ever need

A friend recommended this video (and CD, and book) and indeed, this is worth having and keeping, if you like the musicals of Cameron Macintosh. The performances of Lea Salonga, Jonathan Pryce, Michael Ball, Bernadette Peters, and all others are all outstanding - you can endlessly watch this video over and over again. You shall also be enchanted by the apprearance of the great Julie Andrews, who even gets to recreate a few lines from My Fair Lady. I shall be awaiting the DVD version of this presentation. And make your collection complete - get the CD and the book (with the same titles) as well.

An almost perfect crime and an even better film noir

Walter Neff is an insurance salesman at the top of his game. Self-assured, confident and when he meets the lonely, sexy housewife of a man he's trying to get to renew an auto-insurance policy, he's downright lecherous. Boy if he had a dame like that he'd know what to do, but could he afford her? He could if his Employer paid him what he's really worth. But then the dame, Phyllis is her name, starts to talk about taking a life insurance policy out on her husband without his consent. Alarm bells start ringing in Walter's head but he's already been hooked. The husband has got to go in order for Walter to get the girl, and he'll need alot of cash to turn that trick. And so, Walter plans the "perfect" crime. Insurance companies pay Double Indemnity for railroad accidents because of their rarity, so hubby will have to eat it on a train, at least for the record. Walter's smart but he's not as smart as he thinks, and Phyllis is hardly innocent. When Walter finally thinks he knows the score, who can he turn to when his only confidant is his boss, Barton Keyes - an Inspector Colombo like character played to the hilt by Edward G. Robinson. Keyes will stop at nothing to solve a crime, and unfortunately for Walter, Keyes is as sharp as they come. A nearly flawless film and one that really defines the genre. The film is based on the novel, Double Indemnity, by James M. Cain and adapted to the screen by Raymond Chandler. The Novel was based on an actual murder case.

Doctor Who - The Tomb of the Cybermen - movie DVD cover picture
A classic must see for all Doctor Who fans.

I sat down the other day to watch this story for the first time, all ready to dispute its "classic" status. Once it was over, however, I felt like I might have to amend my all-time top ten list of Doctor Who stories. There were some notably poor elements (the "american" captain was just begging to be made fun of and the cybermats were used one too many times), but aside from these relatively small complaints there weren't very many problems. My favorite scene happened in the last episode when the Doctor pretends to agree with Klieg's plans, just to determine for sure that Klieg was mad. This was a very well realized episode and definitely deserves it's status as "classic" Who.

Not Scary Horror, But Awsome Anyway

I got this movie for 10 dollars of the Halloween Discount Rack at K-Mart while buying paint. I didn't expect it to be good, but I brought it anyway. When I got home that night, I put it in the DVD player and saw it didn't have any bonus features. Another bad thing. But then after I hit play, I was captured after the first second. The movie wasn't cheesy, it was amazing.
The opening credits was about as gory as it got, showing death scenes of Ginger and Brigette, and there were a few lame scenes, like when a character gets pu and walks away with a syrnge sticking out of his neck. At least it was funny.
The werewolf effects however, they just made me sad. I was raised on Sci Fi and Horror, so I've seen some amazing graphics in my time, and this indie film just didn't have them. Mimi Rogers was also the only cast member I had ever heard of, but I will defentally be looking for more things with Emily Perkins and Kathrine Isabell. The way that they played their parts, two gothic teenage sisters, was amazing. If you're looking for a horror-slasher film, buy Nightmare on Elm Street, but if your looking for a good horror movie with a lot of blood, amazing acting, and 'dead dogs on every lawn', then rent GS. It's well worth it. I, personally, cannot wait until Ginger Snaps 2: Unleashed comes out.
