One of the 10-12 I watch repeatedly. . .

As a 30-something chick, I have a few romantic comedies and dramas that I have watched so many times I can repeat them line for line. I put them on, if for nothing else, for the background noise. This movie is one of them. The title of the movie says it all; Julia Roberts (Grace) gives the entire town something to talk about when she finds out about her husband's cheating ways. The movie is funny and poignant at the same time, making the viewer re-visit some decisions they made in their lives that got them where they are today. Kyra Sedgwick is absolutely fabulous (much better than in "Singles") and Gena Rowlands is wonderful, as well. Pair that with a great subplot about horse competitions and coming to grip with aging, you've got a great movie that was completely underrated by most critics.

Fair and balanced?

Finally, a movie that explains Roger Aile's agenda for Fox News. If everyone knew that the chairman and CEO of the Fox News Network is a political operative for the Republican Party, then they would realize they are not watching news at all. Fox News is nothing more that right-wing propaganda.

Let's Not be Too Picky

Some reviewers on this site have blasted this transfer for low video and sound quality. Frankly, this caused me to hesitate several months before plunking down the cash to see this. Since the art house revival scene is dying out and you would never find this in the local Ballbuster, I realized that this was the only chance I had to see this movie--by reputation an overlooked classic.
I hit the play button last night with a certain trepidation, mentally preparing myself to view a badly worn relic. Fortunately, the "low technical quality" rumors are much overblown. Yes, this is a 45 year old color film that did not see loving restoration in its DVD transfer. Nonetheless, color, resolution and sound rate a B or B+, but you would have to be a churlish obsessive to complain about it. The miracle is that you can get this film at all in eminently watchable condition.
I suppose Oedipal elder abuse was a good publicity strategy for establishing street cred for the new wave, but Lola Montes provides convincing evidence that the French movie landscape of the early 50's has been unfairly denigrated as a musty dead end. Lola Montes is a high energy, exuberantly theatrical, cinematic tour de force on the same exalted level as Rules of the Game or Children of Paradise that testifies that the old wave went out in a blaze of glory, not sclerosis.

NYPD Blue - Season 2 - movie DVD cover picture
More balls, and more heart

Season two saw the departure of the David Caruso character, and the introduction of Bobby Simone played by Jimmy Smits. It should be remembered that Smits was the original choice to partner Denis Franz's character of Andy Sipowizc, but because of committments to LA Law was unable to do so, and David Caruso got the part. It works because Smits embues his character with warmth, compassion, but with an underlying strength. The episode where he is introduced is brilliant, and the on-going progression of the relationship between the two leads is never anything less than believable.

Some reviewers express their preference for the Caruso episodes, but I have to say that for me they both work equally well. This plus the added bonus of Sipowizc's character being allowed to grow and have a personal life make series two compulsory viewing. Favourite episode? When Andy semi moves in with his new girlfriend, and she joins him in the shower, Cue one of the best lines in TV history - "Boy, that's sure going to be clean". Priceless!

Series three please!!!

Family Guy, Vol. 1 (Seasons 1 & 2) - movie DVD cover picture
In 1 word: Brilliant

I don't possibly see how this show was cancelled, and King of the Hill wasn't. In most episodes of King of the Hill I find myself to not even laugh once. Family Guy was just so great words can't describe it. In watching any episode you are entitled to laugh every 20-40 seconds, seriously. In my own opinion (and I know many of you will disagree) Family Guy is greater than Simpsons and South Park. I would not recommend this to any person who is the typical family guy/girl though, or to anyone who doesnt take too kindly to racial comments or anything of that sort. Though its not as near as profane as South Park, but its still just as hilarious.
Seth Macfarlane, the creator, is just unbelievable. If you have seen the show and know how Peter Griffen, Brain (the dog), and Stewie (the supergenius one-year-old baby) AND Quagmire (the horny next door neighbor) speak, you will be surprised to hear they are all the voice of Seth Macfarlane. It's aslo a nice neat little fact to know that Seth Green (The Italian Job, Austin Powers) is the voice of Chris Griffen, my favorite character. I love the voice that Seth Green uses for him.
All in all, this is a great collection and I recommend it to any fan of the Simpsons or South Park. The extras are weak, but opposed to what others say, I love the commentary on the few episodes its on, you will catch stuff you wont notice otherwise and they are just hilarious. The series contains all [28] episodes from Seasons 1 and 2 and I'll add its worth whatever price you purchase them for. Hours of laughter.

Safety in the Shadows

I watch this video almost every day with my 10 month old - it's part of her bedtime routime to watch the nightime episode - and I love to sing Shadow's song to her as we watch it - it is such a beautiful song... and my husband loves to sing "Good Morning" with her when we wake up... this is by far our favorite Bear video - and we have many! :)

actully 10,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000 stares!!!!

Although the trailers for this film did not appeal to me in the least, I was surprised to find how much I enjoyed the movie. Even though the majority of the film takes place in a desert, the plot is kept vivid with such factors as Nomad encounters, character deaths, and troubles like electrical storms and fights over water rations. I would certainly recommend this film for its compelling storyline, good acting, and unique plot.

Apocalypse Now - movie DVD cover picture
Psychadellic Splendor

In my opinion, one of the greatest films ever. A truely enthralling look at a war that was never completely understood. A story of five men finding true horror in the Vietnamese jungle. As they search for Colonel Walter Kurtz they find themselves in the most chaotic and unbelievable situations. As if being warned off by the ghosts of the jungle through situations seemingly out of the Twilight Zone, they press on. They find themselves in a war of pure carnage, a sureal place where soldiers are worshiped like the nights of the round table, and war is not war, but a game. A game with intangable costs; lives, sanity, and manhood. Slowly as they make their way to Kurtz they become entangled in a realm not of this world. A realm where man's suffering plays second fiddle to one mans God like stature. A world where there will be a second comming, a greater God, someone who can take Kurtz' place. In a way Kurtz wishes his own demise. He longs for his suffering to end. When it does we are left wondering, who took his place. This film is not for the faint of heart. It is full of grafic violence towards not only man but also animal. The most shocking scene of the movie is when Kurtz is killed. At the same time there is a water buffalo sacrificed by decapitation. In 1979 they didn't have CGI, so you can bet that that was as real as it gets.

Forget Titanic!

This really must be the best movie of all time. I love it so much. Johnny Depp and Leo DiCaprio are the best actors. I've seen a lot of Leo's other films, but in those, he's good, he's even great, but he is just completely astounding in this movie. I think he's cute, but I 've read some reviews here written by people who are obviously like...totally obsessed with him. I'm not like that.
I think that the best part of this movie is that it's about life, even a troubled life, and it's in a place that isn't totally Hollywood glamour, and it's like....real. Not like some other movies, in which everyone has weird problems, and then they have weird solutions to the problems, and then they live happily ever after. Arnie doesn't stop being mentally retarded, and Gilbert's problems don't disappear, but it ends on a happy note. I still don't quite get why he burned the house down, though.
It ranks right up there with the all together best movies I've ever seen, and I'd like to thank everyone who helped with this movie.

Great movie, check out the extras...

As funny as A Bug's Life, it wasn't nearly as funny as the fake mess-upped acting shown in the end credits (both versions shown in theaters are included in this DVD). Also, check out the clip of Geri's Game included on this DVD. Geri's Game was the next generation of computer animation when ABL came out (who knows where Pixar's at now?!). Geri's Game won its own bunch of awards (Academy for short film, I think) and is about an older gentleman playing chess in a park...
