One of my favorite movies. . .

Anyone out of high school, or in it can relate to this. It hits high school life on the nail. All the peer pressures, all the stereotypes, how things aren't like they seem. The characters are all so memorable, and realistic. This is a comedy, romance, and drama. Buy it today, it's a movie you can watch over and over again. You know, you see something new each time.

I would put 10 stars if they would let me!

I tell you now, this film is going to be a BIG contender at this year's Academy Awards. The beauty of this film is its ability to move you. The acting, the scenery, the story....
It is rare that this kindof film come out of the hollywood woodwork. And with the advent of DVDs this is a keeper. This could also double as a reference disc for when you want to showoff your home system. The visuals and audio are tops! I SAY GET IT! Just because this is one of those film you will always want to see over and over again.

Electrifying, captivating by all.

This has got to be one of the best films ever made. I love the dog. He deserves an Oscar for his performance and his trainer should get one as well. The acting is so believable and captivating, you can't help but become involved with the characters. Nicholson played his role to the very top of his acting career and deserved his Oscar. Hunt was especially entertaining as a mother with a sick child who has been hurt before and is reluctant to start a new relationship because of her child. Gooding Jr. is an explosive talent and he showed his talents very well in this one. He keeps getting better, movie after movie. He was great in Jerry Maguire and better in this film. Hats off to all involved with this film. I am looking forward to the directors and writers next projects.

Bizarre and brilliant

David Lynch's first movie is by far the weirdest movie ever made. But if you can watch it without going mad, you will discover that there is alot of metaphors and symbols that make the movie more fascinating and fun with every time you watch it. Its far scarier than any typical horror movie because it messes with your mind and it plays on your imagination. It also lulls you into a state of pure shock when you begin to feel the whole movie is a nightmare of yours. This movie is filled with wonderful imagery, beautiful cinematography and also appeals to the cult-filmgoer. Watch it and love it.

Wings Music- - - Cheesy Music?- - -

The first review of the tape version of Wings ended with a remark to the effect that it was worth sitting through the cheesy organ music. If and when the DVD version is released, and IF IT INCLUDES THE CHEESY ORGAN MUSIC of the taped version, I intend to be at the head of the purchase line!

Girl, Interrupted - movie DVD cover picture
Mesmerizing, emotionally powerful, and unforgettable

What can you say, really? Girl, Interrupted is just a magnificent motion picture boasting some awe-inspiring performances by Winona Rider, the incomparable Angelina Jolie (who definitely earned those best supporting actress awards), Whoopi Goldberg, and virtually everyone else in the film. The motion picture easily rises above the constraints that threatened to clip its wings - it's not a chick flick, and it is absolutely not a female version of One Flew over the Cuckoo's Nest. It's a powerful story that touches a spot somewhere in the hearts of each of us, as we are all crazy down deep inside. Most people hide it or rob it of its power by ignoring it, but what happened to Susanna Kaysen could happen to any one of us - life becomes sad and confusing, time threatens to overpower us, bad things refuse to remain below the surface, etc. Indeed, after watching the film, it is difficult to say whether Susanna was ever crazy or not. I would go out on a limb and say the same of Lisa: she's a sociopath, but she lives in a world free of masks, uninhibited by the moral precepts of society, unafraid to not only examine the truth but spit in its eye, empowered by a sense of freedom that no mental institution can take away from her. She is a much more fascinating creature than Susanna, a roaring flame of spirit compared to Susanna's dark husk of existence. That is why we are drawn to her; Lisa has an excess of the vivacity so many of us long for in our own lives.

This film was based on the true story of Susanna Kaysen. As the director explains in the commentary, the screenplay does diverge from the book on several occasions, but it seeks to communicate the essence and insights of Kaysen's experience. I can't compare the two, as I haven't read the book, but this movie definitely has a lot to show us about life, ourselves, and those around us. We basically follow Susanna's tragic yet empowering experience in the institution right along with her, seeing everything and everyone through her eyes. At first, she naturally rebels, lamenting the fact she is basically stuck in a place surrounded by crazy people, but she soon comes to develop complex but very real bonds with her fellow patients - even Lisa, who basically scared the dickens out of her when she first arrived. Her life in the institution, the traumatic episodes she witnesses among the other girls, and her own inner struggle to face up to her own problems must be experienced, so I will not attempt to describe them here. From laughter to sadness, it all rings true and seems incredibly real.

It's no secret that Angelina Jolie pretty much steals the show with her magnetic performance as Lisa, but she is only one star in a constellation of great performers on display here. Rider is superb and would seem to be the perfect if not the only actress to play Susanna. Brittany Murphy is also incredible as Daisy, the most tragic character to come out of the story. It is amazing to watch someone with the incredible vivacity of Murphy deliver such a subtle, emotionally vulnerable performance. And then there's Whoopi. I really don't like Whoopi Goldberg, but I have to admit she is really an incredibly gifted actress. The warmth and oftentimes unstated compassion she shows to the girls in her ward is really one of the most important foundations of this entire movie.

The DVD features some nice special features. The commentary by director James Mangold is very beneficial to the viewer, as he fills in some of the gaps between the actual true story and the screenplay of the film. I certainly would not have guessed that he structured much of the film around the motifs of The Wizard of Oz - it is fascinating, not to mention really weird, to hear him go on and on with comparisons between the two films. You also get some sixteen minutes of deleted scenes with or without director's commentary - these provide a little more insight into our characters, but I would agree that they were better left on the cutting room floor. The obligatory HBO First Look feature on the making of the film gives the viewer a chance to hear from cast members as well as Susanna Kaysen herself. These special features are just icing on the cake, though, as Girl, Interrupted is easily one of the most impressive and emotionally complex films to hit the big screen in many years.

greetings reviewers, did you all get a load of the editorial review of this product?sheesh! oh well, first of all, the initial book that later inspired the movie, was unto itself, a great peice of work to begin with. anyone that has read the book all the way thru more than once will automatically know that it isnt just some drugged--out, loady-supreme movie! as a matter of fact it is an extremelyexpert example of adapting book into film. 75% of films based on books usually end up finding a new direction in certian points of the story to help an audience comprehend the plot, or rather,"get it" and be able to get up and rent their next movie and plop back down onto the couch, remote in hand. i suppose this movie is a desired taste and most people really will never get to know where it directly comes from, but that should not stop you from seeing the truly entertaiing story that is being told.or whatever, because you know, it's like when something is like being something because that is all anyone knew until you learned it was okay to be like being something like something, or i could be right! haha. come on, jeff, have a beer at least!

i first saw this film when i was sixteen on video as i couldn't see this in the theatres due to the nc-17 rating ofcourse. i have to say that this film looks every bit as good today as it did back then. the film is far from being labled as soft porn as it has many wonderful performances by some of the greatest actors/actresses to ever grace the screen & the sex scenes which are shown here are all tastefully done. i'd read some of henry miller's work before watching this film & i have to admit that fred ward makes a splendid, believable henry miller come to life. great nods should also go out to maria de medeiros who gives much spirit to the passionate & much loved anais nin as well as uma thurman who gave the performance of a lifetime as miller's beautiful wife june. i visit this film from time to time & i always see something new each time i watch it. if you desire a film which has intelligent dialogue, fabulous acting, & a timeless theme then henry & june is the film for you. if you enjoyed jurassic park 3, you probably won't find this film very fascinating.
