The Truman Show - movie DVD cover picture
One of 1998's Top 5 Movies -- And a Very Good Year.

Four out of the five movies nominated for the Best Picture Oscar of 1998 deserved to be there, in my opinion. Take out 'The Thin Red Line' and add in 'The Truman Show', and the Academy would have actually gotten the top lineup right.
'The Truman Show' is an exceptional movie, partly because it could have gone so wrong. The premise could easily come across as some episode off of "The Twilight Zone", and "everybody" knows that Jim Carrey in the lead role makes this a comedy. Well, it didn't turn out that way.
Jim Carrey, in this movie, shows (once again) that he can do some excellent dramatic acting. His character has traces of Jim's wacko roles from the earlier movies that so many viewers define him by, but this works. Truman Burbank has been raised in a totally unnatural environment, and Jim Carrey shows the damage that this has caused in the character. He is like a bomb which can go off at any second, and which does go off during the course of the movie.
Similarly, the rest of the movie succeeds by walking just at the edge of ludicrousness. The very careful handling of the story by director Peter Weir, and the restrained performance of Ed Harris and the rest of the cast keeps us at the very edge of our suspension of disbelief. The story is bizarre, but just within the realm of possibility for your mind to accept. The result is like an episode of "The Prisoner", directed by Frank Kapra.

Tara is great

Tara is my favorite chericter in Buffy history, and perhaps all of telivision, here we meet her and that is why i love this season, this and season five have good episodes which delve deeper into her chericter. "Hush" her intro, "New Moon Rising" (i love this episode, dispite how much i loved Seth Green on the show, because while all Wiccans aren't lesbians, i felt it added realism for Willow to discover that new side to herself.)Her appearence in "Restless" was excellent also. In season five, "Family" shows where Tara came from, and helps cement her as part of the Scoobies.

Million Dollar Baby (Widescreen Edition) - movie DVD cover picture
the most heart felt story I have come across from the seats of the cinema.

The movie begins powerfuly, showing in development, characters that in the end, you will cry for, mourning painfully as you would for someone whom you truely care for.
So ironic Clint is, a man known for his violence, but alas in the autumn of his life he has viewed violence in the horrific consequences that they come with. As in mystic river or Unforgiven, and lastly, and more importantly Million dollar baby. Hilary Swank was bred for this role, calling on her youth experiences in interviews, but like her character, who was driven and all heart, needed temperance from a wiser sort: Clint Eastwood. Eastwood seems to have the unflagging spirit that is throbbing in his films, when you think he is down and out of his career and you think it is over for him, he comes back anew!
It gives me hope, watching films like this, a rekindling of past flames for film, that honestly, has died down, but every now and then is stoked by fine surprises! In an age where the latest trend is what was last best to sell, it is refreshing to see someone so romantic of times now past. Eastwood is a zeitgeist for his time, where movies were original and always changing, compelling viewers to go to the cinema and experience something creative. Not re-hashes and countless sequels! All of these things can be said of Million dollar baby, which I adore.
Don't look to find politics in this beautifully poignant film, where, if you have the ill will, could fine. Instead, rather appreciate the story, because lets face it, Clint is not political in this film. Meaning he does not draw you to one side of a battle of controversy, or to the other. It is a movie you will not find in the documentary section, it is a piece of work, meant to be expressive emotionally. Not meant to pitch a campaign.

Pretty Woman - movie DVD cover picture
The Clock Struck Midnight

Richard Gere and Julia Roberts star in the 1990 instant classic Pretty Woman. Nominated for a Academy Award for Best Actress, Roberts shows off her winning smile and wonderful wit as Vivian, a down on her luck prostitute and Richard Gere plays multi-millionaire Edward Lewis, who is a hard nosed real estate tycoon that puts the screws to other people by ripping their businesses out from under their noses.
The story begins as Vivian leaves her apartment avoiding her landlord looking for rent money and Edward is finishing his talk with his lawyer about the upcoming meeting with the head of one of the businesses they are trying to take over. Neither of them realized that the lives that they were escaping from would never be the same the next morning.
They meet as Edward stops at Vivian's street corner. He is having trouble driving his lawyer's sports car. As Vivian is pushed towards the car, Edward realizes that he is also lost and needs to find his hotel. Vivian starts this modern day tale of Cinderella by asking him if wants some company. Edward brings her into his carriage and asks if she would like to drive. Seems that she likes sports cars and knows a little bit more about the car than what he does. He tells her that he never drives because he is chauffeured around in limousines. She tells him of her tales from home and the boys she learned about cars from. The movie progresses as Edward hires Vivian to be his companion for the week as he visits Los Angeles.
Edward sends her out to buy more conservative clothing more befitting a woman of her beauty and charm for the rest of the week that they would be together. The rest of the movie details how they spent that week as Vivian is introduced into the world of big money. I can't explain the rest of the story without ruining the movie but I can tell you that its' genuine appeal as a classic is due to the acting performances of Julia Roberts and Richard Gere. Julia Roberts' performance for 119 minutes as Vivian is something that most women can relate to in this modern day fairy tale. I give pretty woman 5 stars for its story and its' ability to make my wife cry.
