Once Upon a Dream...

This new 2-disc dvd of Disney's 1959 masterpiece is simply beautiful. "Sleeping Beauty" was a turning point for Disney when animators sought a more sophisticated look for their animation and presented it in widescreen. The abundance of extra features for this dvd show how this look was achieved with a history of behind the scenes which includes samples, restoration comparisons and interviews from many of the animators. Also included are games ("Rescue Aurora" and "Princess Personality Game"), music videos, art projects, art galleries, trailers, scrapbooks, publicity posters, etc. Also included: a 25 minute short film "Grand Canyon", and two other shorts - "The Peter Tchaikovsky Story", and "Four Artists Paint One Tree".
The commentary is especially noteworthy and informative. It features a narration by Disney historian Jeff Kurtti with the participation of Eyvind Earle (art director), Mary Costa (voice of Aurora), Ollie Johnston (supervising animator), Marc Davis (supervising animator), Frank Armitage (background painter), Mike Gabriel (Disney artist) and Michael Giaimo (Disney artist).
The dvd has the option of viewing it in widescreen mode (enhanced for 16x9 televisions) or full screen. I must add that viewing it in full screen will be a travesty - the full glory of this artistic accomplishment is best seen in widescreen!

ENCHANTED

I HAVE VISITED NEW MEXICO SEVERAL TIMES AND AM PLANNING TO MOVE THERE. THE STATE IS KNOWN AS THE "LAND OF ENCHANTMENT" AND THE MOVIE DEMONSTRATES WHY. IT TOOK A FEW DAYS FOR ME TO FIGURE OUT THE MEANING, WHICH IN ITSELF MAKES THE MOVIE GREAT, BUT ONCE I DID I KEPT FINDING MEANING. IT IS HARD TO EXPLAIN. SOMETHING ABOUT HAVING THE TYPE OF LIFE THAT WE ALL WISH WE COULD HAVE; SIMPLE, BEAUTIFUL, QUIET COMPANIONSHIP WITH TRUE, UNRUSHED CONVERSATION, NO CELL PHONES, ETC. AND THE IRONY OF SOMEONE DESPARATE TO LEAVE IT ALL BEHIND IN SEARCH FOR SOMETHING BETTER. LATER, THAT PERSON COMES BACK. I THINK WE ALL CAN RELATE TO JO.

One Geek Scientist Playing With Body Parts!!!Hi Tom!!!Benedictine Rules!!!

This movie is terrible. At least the Major League Geek Scientist is in Prison where he belongs. However he is soon up to his old tricks which involve playing with rats and dead bodies. I don't know about you but I prefer my women to be whole and not in pieces of spare parts. I give this movie 5 stars because Tom , the guy who works at the Video Store is a good bloke and I am introducing him to great booze such as Grand Marnier and Dom Benedictine!!!

Great!

Over the summer, the two fluffiest films I saw were this and Billy's Hollywood Screen Kiss. In this case they got it right. The jokes are funny (especially the few in-jokes for DC area residents), the situations absurd, and the romance at the center truly touching. The "hunky" actor playing the hearthob is gorgeous (just what you want for fluff) and the rest of the cast interacts wonderfully. It will remind you of 40's romantic comedy, only here the gay content is center stage and not coded. As a college age gay male getting pretty tired of seeing 101 straight romantic comedies come out every year, this was a perfect antidote. A really nice gay flick.

Delightful for all ages.

I had seen this ballet on TV when I was a child. At the age of 18 I attended the Royal Ballet School, now I am a teacher. I always wanted to see it again. When I found it on Amazon I was "jete-ing" for joy. I have shared it with my ballet students. It was especially great to see Sir Frederick Ashton as Tiggy Winkle. I attended his memorial service in London. He was a fine man. Everyone should watch and enjoy Ms. Potters stories told by the dancers.

WOW

This film was brilliant -- I'm not just saying that because of various sex scenes. The twists were mostly unexpected (unless you saw the trailer that ruined most of the twists", The acting is great, so is the script and well, I have to admit, the sex scenes are damn good too

Excellence in Movie Making

It is an excellent Movie... and the trilogy is a must have collection. The visual effects are absolutely amazing and you wouldn't get bored watching it repeatedly. The actors did complete justice to the roles they played... Aragon, Gandolf, Frodo and not to forget Sam.

A Must See...but not for the kids

You can certainly see the Kubrik influence of the bizarre coupled with the tenderness and humanity of Spielberg in AI. Haley Joe Osment was perfect for this role. This is not a movie to bring your youngsters to, though. I went thinking it would be like an ET only with robots. Was I ever wrong. You will laugh, get tears in your eyes, and also be totally facinated throughout the film. I would highly recommend it for mature audiences.

The best that ever happened in cinematography

There are only very few like Tarkovsky who draw movies (Paradjanov, Fellini, to name but a few). I guess the word "painter" may not only describe oil, pencil and canvas, but rather be attached to a way of thinking and portraying your ideas and thoughts. "The Mirror" is definitely among the best portraits (rather a self-portrait) combining distant childhood memories (perhaps even transformed into some subconscious images) with poetic background. Tarkovsky uses his father's verses not only throughout this movie, but also in other films he has created, "Stalker" being one of them. When watching his work you may as well see or rather feel something familiar, something that perhaps has happened to you. And that's what makes his style so different. Try to watch the film all at once without using "Fast Forward" or "Stop" button, that way it's understood much better.
