Old or New

Just went to see Soderbergh's Solaris. A good effort and a job well done, and I have to say, I am pleased to see that a couple of Hollywood heads have higher than typical aspirations in attempting to remake a novel which is both challenging and not easy to market.A good stab at it, which I suppose we owe to Soderbergh's writing and direction than Cameron's usual search for quick profit. More straight-forward and focused than Tarkovsky's original this movie should be much easier to digest for for uninitiated. Still, as meditative ,challenging and beautiful films go, Andrei Tarkovsky's original is a hands-down winner. I agree with an earlier reviewer that some sequences in the original(notably the highway scene, but there are others) are inspired and unforgettable.

Circular time/multilayered memories

Having gotten thru only one Alain Robbe Grillet novel,I appreciate seeing his ideas about time , memory ,decomposition of reality...the state of mans consciosness in a visually beautiful movie.Forget about plot if you watch this movie. It's a circular frozen moment of memory.

One word for this movie (Stuuuuuuuuuuupendous as Barney would say)

(My Toys"R"Us had the video and DVD early) Barney stars in another feature length (direct-to-video) movie. When a princess appears out of a story book, Barney and his friends have to use their imaginations to bring her back home. I personally think it's for more like 2-4 year olds that the younger kids, cause of the woman guard's attitude wouldn't be right for people under 1(It'd frighten them). Otherwise it's a great movie for Barney fans. (Not many songs, but lots of action and imagination)

The Secret of Nikola Tesla - movie DVD cover picture
A great primer for thoes who don't know about this genius

This film is an overview of the great and hidden life of a man who has probably contributed more to humanity than any other being in "recorded" history. It cronicles the period of Tesla's life and associations with Edison, Morgan, Westinghouse, Twain and other notable contemporaries. It doesn't go into any great detail about this complex character, but is quite informative about who the man was, and what we as humanity and our "Spaceship Earth" have been cheated out of. It stars Orson Wells as J.P. Morgan and Struther (sp?) Martin as George Westinghouse, other than that mostly unknowns. I hesitate to give it 5 stars mainly because of the film quality, but it is absolutely a must-see for all, ESPECIALLY children of all ages! Oh, this is a foreign film, and there are subtitles in the first 5 min. or so, but not to worry, the rest is in english.

Excellent movie.

People have already given plot details in other reviews...they're missing out on a bit though on what makes this movie stand out and be mememorable--and erotic--beyond your regular "soft porn" or even hardcore movie.
Lee was institutionalized for a suicide attempt--not for the "cutting"--she was distracted when cutting and cut too deep--it was an accident. So...she was treated for the suicide attempt--not for the cutting behavior. She's a sadist but doesn't realize it. She WANTS to be a secretary--it's her ultimate job fantasy. She wants someone to tell her what to do. Later, when Edward explains to her WHY she cuts herself (it makes her inner pain visible and she can watch it heal--she can't see inner pain and can't make it heal)and tells her YOU WILL NEVER DO IT AGAIN--she gets the control over the behavior that she has fought to control (throwing the "sewing kit" away, then retreiving from the trash). She tried--but was unable to do it on her own. By giving herself over to "a higher power" she finally achieves this and achieves HER ultimate happiness.
I don't think that he ended the relationship because he was disgusted with himself or the situation. I think that was his taking the relationship to a newer, higher level of intimacy. He was punishing her/controlling her. When she was consciously making mistakes and eagerly getting into spanking position, it took away any punishment that it had. What to do now? The ultimate punishment--fire her! She is devastated--and decides to just go and marry her "boy-friend"--a young man who also experienced a "break down" and had been asking her to marry him. But, while trying on her fiance's mother's wedding dress, she realizes what she needs to do. She races to the office, barges in and sits down at his desk and refuses to leave. The ultimate fruition of the relationship--she proves her total and unquestioning devotion to him in spite of other people knowing what's going on--even family and friends. She does this by sitting in his office with her hands flat on his desk without moving from place, not moving, eating,etc-- even urinating on herself--showing him that she is ready to be his submissive--his ultimate slave. AND they live happily EVER AFTER. And that's really the best part in dysfunctional relationships, isn't it?

Toy Story 2 is Not Just a Sequel

This film was, at one point, slated for "straight-to-video" hell until Disney got it's head out of it's computer software and re-hired Tom Hanks and Tim Allen to make this wonderful "Toy Story" sequel. Faster, bolder, and even MORE human than the first, "Toy Story 2" takes the "toys as humans too" concept to such lengths that you might find yourself feeling guilty about the way you treated your own toys when you were young. It's a wild ride, definitely one for the kids, and it comes highly recommended by me.

Bloody Murder 2

Where do I begin, hmmm. Well, this is absolutely the worst movie ever made, period. Their is no redemming quality, no silver lineing, and no way to ever get back the time spent on this insult to film. I will not go into detail, (the negative reviews say it all) but don't foul yourself into thinking that this movie is campy and therefore misunderstood.... NOTHING COULD BE FURTHER FROM THE TRUTH! If that is the case then this movie is so tongue-in-cheek that it might as well be called Scream 4.

Being Sinful Can Be Good

Antonio Banderas plays a wealthy Cuban who is to be married to an American woman he doesn't know. He marries an actress, played by Angelina Jolie. But she isn't the woman he thinks she is. This movie had twists and turns wondering where it would lead the viewer. It was a seductive and captivating movie. Angelina Jolie plays the role of a seductress very well. Antonio Banderas is gorgeous as a dashing, yet naive man.

Chasing Amy - Criterion Collection - movie DVD cover picture
Kevin Smith's finest work

Kevin Smith entered the scene in 1994 with the fabulous cult classic "Clerks," and his career took off from there. Using an incredible array of vocabulary and references in his scripts, he creates works that can only be described as excellent. In "Chasing Amy," Smith decorates his materpiece with a brilliant cast, intelligent writing, and directing that is so simple, it's a delight to watch. Every moment is captured with a sort of intense reality that may strike one as too frank and up front at first, but it's this sort of honesty that allows a film like this to thrive. The story revolves around a character named Holden (Affleck), who befriends Alyssa (Adams), and soon falls in love with her. Little does Holden know, however, that she is a lesbian, and thus, this creates a conflict between his best friend, Banky (Lee), and Holden himself. How does Holden deal with the passionate love he has for this girl, and at the same time mantain a strong friendship with Banky? The cast is incredibly talented, and couldn't have been replaced by anyone else. Jason Lee is absolutely stunning as the bitter best friend who takes his frusterations out on Alyssa herself. However, this film does carry an R rating for very good reason. The subject matter is very mature, and everything discussed is at times hard to swallow for a more sensitive audience. The movie is also very honest, and deals with issues such as homosexuality, and homophobia in a manner that is both realistically honest, and smart. Incredible film, and really does deserve Criterion status.

Best movie EVER about sports gambling

This movie really does a great job of giving us a view to the inside life of sports gambling. It shows the highs and lows and portrays them both well.

I rented this movie on a whim at the local video place, saw that it starred some of todays hotter younger stars, and had a plot with something I was interested in, and thought that I would give it a whirl.

Probably the most entertaining 100 minutes I've seen on video in a while.

Like most movies, this one has a moral message, but it doesn't rub off in a cheesy way that makes you want to stop watching movies forever.

I don't like a 5 star system, I feel it's not an accurate portrayal of movies, so I'm giving this one 9 out 10 stars. Hope you all enjoy, and if any of you know any other films about sports gambling, please let me know so I can check them out as well.

POOF!
