The Mystery Science Theater 3000 Collection, Vol. 6 - movie DVD cover picture
Ok, so a gender-confused woman in leotards...

...shows up in your bedroom and tries to coerce you into joining the school band, all the while claiming that musical instruments are her family and that she knew Adam and Eve and your father. What do you do?

Well, you can be happy that this is happening to gawky middle schooler Buzz instead of you as you watch Mr. B Natural, a vomit-inducing school film turned into comedy gold by our heroes at MST3K.

The 6th DVD box set breaks away from the Sci-Fi channel era and back to Comedy Central for three movies and a fourth collection of shorts. The shorts include X Marks the Spot, in which a slain motorist is brought before the God of New Jersey who probably won't let him into New Jersey heaven because of his many sinful moving violations, and the mythical Hired Pt. 1 which is just what Manos fans have needed to learn why Jimmy the Salesman doesn't think that sales are an important part of his job.

It also features Teenagers from Outer Space, your usual 50's produced, teenagers-in-their-30's centered hokum about giant lobsters, a "tohcha" loving commander and a malicious alien empire "We are the supreme race. We have the supreme weapons. We have the supreme pizzas". Gunslinger (which was already released on VHS) is classic Corman about an old west feud betweeen two rough and tumble women with anachronistic access to eyebrow pencils. Finally, Attack of the Giant Leeches (or are they guys in black rain ponchos, no wait, they're definitely leeches) which features playful murderous bantering between a slovenly hillbilly and his nymphette wife, a main character who pretty much does nothing, and some semi-intelligent human livestock-raising leeches (as Joel hypothesizes: "They're smart enough to enjoy eating at Chili's, but not smart enough to realize it's a chain).

Unforunately, there are no extras to speak of, but since it has long unseen episodes of the most original, inventive, and aggressively funny shows to ever hit the airwaves, it can all be forgiven. Fans have no reason not to pick this up and newcomers owe it to themselves to see the cult show that never should have just been cult. Now if you'll excuse me, I've got movie sign.

Coming of Age Anime...

When witches turn 13 they leave their home to live by themselves for a year. Kiki has just turned 13 and must now master the broom and face her own fears in order to be a successful witch. She must also build a strong belief in her own abilities and face love for the first time in her life. Kiki's best friend Jiji, a black cat, travels with her on her year long journey and often interjects with hilarious comments on the things and issues they face. Kiki's Delivery Service is a remarkable film with many valuable lessons to be pondered by both young and old. In addition, the film offers both humor, drama, and suspense, which in the end has been put together into a superb cinematic experience.

The Science of high altitude physiology

Unlike most movies of this genre, "Everest the Death Zone" attempts less to entertain than it does to educate. While there is some outstanding footage of the climb itself, the video really gains its strength from it's scientific examination of the physiology of high altitude climbers. Sure, there may be more glamorous videos available, but you will not find one as gripping as this. The film takes the viewer through the planning stages, the climb and the post-expedition review of the data collected and relates it to the extremely hypoxic environment endured by the climbers. As with all films made for a general audience, there is even some drama as one climber suffers near fatal breathing difficulties on the descent. A particularly poignant sequence near the summit shows the body of Rob Hall, the NZ guide, who died in the fateful 1996 tragedy.
On a scientific level, this account of high altitude exposure is spot-on. I have used it in college level classes to illustrate the effects of lack of oxygen to my students. Monitoring and recovery equipment (pulse-oximetry and Gamow bags) is demonstrated in use on real patients and suitable treatment and rescue strategies are discussed.
This film cuts away the mythology surrounding much of the high altitude climbing world and as such is a must see for any active or armchair climber.

In Search Of Ancient Ireland - movie DVD cover picture
Truly excellent series

I truly enjoyed this DVD - as someone else said the sites of ancient Ireland are visually wonderful. I did not know that so many of these places are still there as they were in their original state. This three part series tells much about how the Irish lived and what the original culture was like. It begins in the Neolithic time and goes right through to the time of the English invasion. So much of early Irish history was unique and such a surprise to me to learn about. I did not know that the history of Ireland was so rich and that so much information is known about it. I also recommend the book that goes with the series - same title - as it fills in so much of the historical background and scholarship. Excellent!

Gettin Jiggy Wit It

This is a great video collection of Will Smith's music videos. Although it is not a complete collection of his videos, it is definitely worth the buy. However, I was dissapointed to find that the videos 'Summertime'and 'Boom! Shake the Romm' were not included. Still worth the buy though!

A few mess ups, but the best movie!

I thought that this movie was really, really good. Yah, yah, I know there were a few messed up places, but over all I have to say that it was a lot better than the ones DiC had done. (Thanks Pioneer! ) Although they could have done better by *not* using phrases the character never uses, like Moon Mama, Tuxedo, masked man, Moon Princess Elimination, etc. Also some of the attacks were messed up. I absolutely *loved* the ending where Tuxedo Mask sees Princess Serena and says "My love" then stands up and turns into Prince Darien. It gave me chills all the way down my spine! Also the way he held his arm around her and helped her hold the crystal. It was so romantic. The ending song fit it perfectly. The Power of Love gave you the idea that the Sailor Scouts were giving Princess Serena their power and love, which was exactly what they were doing! I also loved the part where Fiore gave Darien his life flower to save Serena, and you can see Darien kiss Serena. Absolutely perfect! Although the ending could be more stonger than just ending with everyone talking. Call me crazy, but I thought that it was very well done, and the ending was *the* best part in the whole movie. You have got to see it!

Digimon Season 1 Total Digimon - movie DVD cover picture
Excellent Collection

I think this collection is the best Digimon DVD on the market. With the fourth season of Digimon in progress, you never get to see how the series began anymore. Now, here are the first 13 episodes of the first season on one disc. The collection is filled with tons of action packed battles and each of the seven digi-destined children has at least one episode that focuses almost exclusively on him or her, so you get to know the entire cast. If you have any remote interest in Digimon, this collection is an absolute must. It covers the series up to and including the battle with Devimon.

Last 15 minutes are a scream!!!!!

I was on the edge of my seat the entire movie. Wait Until Dark is the perfect thriller to watch in complete darkness when you're home alone (that is, if you don't scare easily). The last fifteen minutes are more chilling, more hair-raising, and more gripping then any other fifteen minutes in film history. In one part of the last scene, I screamed so loud, I probably woke up the neighbors. Seriously! Don't pass this one by!
