Mr. Skeffington

I just read the review by Mister Scott ? No need to search for his name, as I shall ignore any and all his "reviews" of classic movies and their actress'. Mr. Scott..? doesn't seem to appreciate very much about Bette Davis, especially in her movie, Mr. Skeffington. This movie was in my opinion, and others, the very finest movie she ever made, and there were alot of them, which is evident by the awards, and accolades to the LADY. I have one or two of the movies included in the "collection", and I have ordered the set today. These collections are true "collectibles"....Personally, "Dark Victory" was good, but not a of the early Davis flicks, supported by Ron Reagan and Bogart....appealing but not the "best" of the lot. I have been with Bette for her entire career in the movies, and now with these wonderful collections, I can continue enjoying them and realizing again, just how wonderful an Actress she really was. See her last movie "Whales of August"....a masterpiece.
Bette Walden (yes, that's really my name).....

A beautiful movie

Johnny Depp plays James Berrie, a playwright who is dealing with an unstable career and a strained marriage. While writing in the park one day, he befriends Sylvia, a young widow (Kate Winslet), and her four boys. As he begins spending time with the Davies family, James is finally allowed to let his imagination take off, and he is inspired to write the play "Peter Pan."

This is much more than a story about "Peter Pan" itself. The film focuses on the relationships that James develops with the Berrie children, especially young Peter (played by the adorable Freddie Highmore). Although his bond with the Davies family is exactly what James needs to get his creative juices flowing, his already strained relationship with his wife Mary (Radha Mitchell) suffers even more because of it. There is also the issue of Sylvia's mother (Julie Christie), who disapproves with James' relationship with her daughter because she fears it will ruin any chance Sylvia has of remarrying.

The cast of "Finding Neverland" is excellent. Depp and Winslet deliver exceptional performances as always, and I was especially impressed by the talent of the four young boys in the film. They all have very promising careers ahead of them.

I think everyone will enjoy this movie. It's magical and a tad bitersweet, and I left the theatre wanting to learn more about the real James Berrie, as this film is based on his real life.

In the world of film noire I found all the elements here, with wonderful casting. Lake and Ladd are imbued with a gorgeous chemistry, there is an underlying element that suggests that if the circumstances had been different:they would easily have succumbed to each other. This is indeed Ladd at his best,he carries the subtle, seething world of hatred just beneath the surface, and the camera is fascinated by the intensity of his physical gestures, and facial expressions. In particular when he recounts the nature of the injury to his wrist, you get a window into how his mind works and what motivates him to be who he is. Lake is strong, and vulnerable and I see no mistep in her performance. This is a film that mesmerized me when I was much younger and I still find it to do so. Laird Cregar as Willard Gates is as oily as grease and I felt his performance too was a standout,a coward at the core but willing to have murder done on his behalf . I enjoyed the whole spy-thing interwoven into the plot, and as well very memorable atmospherics, especially the scene where Ladd and Lake are trapped in the railroad yards; the fog just added an extra dimension to the scene. I also found Robert Preston did a fine job too in his role as Lake's detective love interest with an understated performance, but with just the right touch of resolve to win through the day.

A Cool Dry Place - movie DVD cover picture

From beginning to end, "A Cool Dry Place" genuinely entices the viewer. My 20-year old son introduced Vince Vaughn's acting versatility to me when he rented "Clay Pigeons"; his cool, suave manner could "best" James Bond's attitude anyday - and you have to love that "unique" laughter! "Psycho", "Swingers" and "The Lost World:Jurassic Park" are GREAT movies (between my son and I, we own them all), but Vince Vaughn's performance in "A Cool Dry Place" is charming and attractive! Any actor who can portray a "cold, deadly" killer in one movie, but yet portray a loving, but firm, Father in this movie has "Oscar" written into his future.
Joey Lauren Adams was well cast for this film. I bought "Dazed and Confused" last year because I also suffered from the "screwed-up" seventies and graduated from high school in May 1976. I completely related to that movie! I thought Joey Lauren Adams was "Renee Zellweger" - Sorry Joey! After watching "Big Daddy", I had no doubt that there is a BIG difference between the two actresses. Her throaty, sometimes high-pitched, sexy voice is enough to drive Vince Vaughn WILD! She may be a "Veterinarian's assistant", but she HAS MORE CLASS than the woman, Monica Potter, who portrays the "truant" wife. Even though she is "just" the girl friend, she has more wisdom when it comes to "rearing" children and "what is best for the child" and her acting is SUPERB!
Bobby Moat as Calvin is EXCELLENT! A beautiful child and an impressive actor!
Like Samantha K. (Gainesville,FL), I wish I could afford to buy this movie NOW!

Sharpe's Rifles - movie DVD cover picture
a favourite anti-hero

I had not read any of Sharpe's books before watching the series. However, I love British TV drama and novel adaptations, and I love the period in which Sharpe's adventures are set, so after reading the reviews in, I decided to give it a try. And now I'm hopelessly hooked! All the actors' performances are wonderful, but Sean Bean's is simply stunning. The story is very respectful to the people who lived in Spain in those times, both those who were for and against the French (I'm Spanish. I know), and it is even respectful to the French enemy. The plot is a mixture of adventure and spy story, with quite a bit of criticism of the British class system thrown in.This is as good as a historical novel can be (and I've read quite a few)especially because of the feeling you get that the characters belong to the period in the way they think and the way they act. In fact, it would answer the question What were all those handsome officers from Jane Austen's novels doing when they were not dancing with her heroines?. This is the other side of the same story, without contradicting it. The hero,Sharpe, belongs to the "dregs" of society, he is "scum", although he is more human and braver than the petty officers who have purchased their comissions and who are, otherwise, so elegant and so good at dancing with Austen's heorines. I am also beginning to read all the Sharpe's novels and I love them. Bravo Sharpe! Stand and Fight!

Why so many low scores?

I felt this movie deserved much more merit than 1 star. So it's long, boo hoo. Take a breather halfway through it and come back later to finish it. It is possbile to watch movies like you read books(or do you 1 stars not read?).
This movie is not only origional in concept but a thought provoking movie. Drawn out scences are purposely like so to reflect upon the moment. To take in the scenery much like the portrayed soldiers did.
I'm most surprised that people have not mentioned the obvious Christ-like figure played by Private Witt. He is the withstanding believer surrounded by Hell, and (SPOILER) sacrafices his life for the safety of his company(END SPOILER).
Don't rent this expecting an all-out action flick. Clarification: Saving Private Ryan(SPR) is an action film, this is a drama. Apparently many reviewers were not aware of this before watching it and very closemindedly destroyed the film for (heaven forbid) time constraints and lack of action. SPR is comparable in a completely different genre of movies.
It's not an all-out bore though. The movie has well spaced action sequences to keep the movie flowing. The truth about war is that it's not all action as SPR may have mis-interpretted. I am in no way bashing SPR because, like I mentioned, it is good on it's own merits.
This entire film is fancied with highly impressive performances by Nolte, Penn, Cusack, and many others. I especially like how Sean Penn and Private Witt perform the entire dramatic appeal of SPR in a five minute argument about how much one human life was worth in war.
It almost makes a mockery of Speilberg's falling dramatic attempts in his recent drama films. Schindler's List is one of my favorite films of all time. Amistad is somewhere in the middle to upper. SPR is not even on the list. It's next to Star Wars in the action category.
It doesn't feel right ending this review on that note but alas I must stop. Thin Red Line is a brilliant film that is as cinematic as it is thought provoking. By all means rent it before you buy it. But my recommendation to serious film fans is to buy ASAP.

5 star movie, 2 star commentary

This is one of the great gangster movies ever. That alone makes it worth owning. The transfer is good. Watching it on a giant screen TV is a pleasure.

However, the commentary on this disc is not so much bad as it isn't really about the movie itself. Film historian Dr. Drew Casper spends the entire opening scene, not analyzing the cinematography or the editing or the acting. Instead, he gives a rather pedestrian rundown of Cagney's career up to 1949. That's fine but, what about the movie.

5 star max out

I'll give it 5 stars. This is very much like French New Wave movie from the early 1960's. The only things that were missing were that it was in modern day Japan, and no jump cuts. Check out Cleo from 5 to 7, or My Life to Live, if you like Lost.
