Oh, I LOVE this series!

I was one of the few who watched this when it was on Fox, and I almost cried when it was canceled. My husband got me the DVD for Christmas and I have to say, it was the best gift he has ever picked out!
You believe the characters, you can't wait to see what happens next. I wish there were more than 14 episodes! Can't wait for the movie to come out. Everyone we have shown this to has run out and gotten a copy for themselves.
Best series ever!!!!

Thunderball - movie DVD cover picture
" You Shouldn't Have Opened That Car Door By Yourself..."

Yes it is definately one of the best movies in the Bond saga. ( The thought of the remake, Never Say Never Again, ohh lets not even remember how bad it was..).
Ok, unforunately by this point the Connery had started to lose his hair and it shows, but it doesn't detract from the fact that Connery is, was and will always be James Bond. He carries the role so effortlessly that whoever is the " new " James Bond, they are always measured by Connery and quite rightly so..
But, to the movie. Connery returns again to the screen to save the world from the terrorist organisation of SPECTRE. The opening sequence, the the rocket pack at the chateau in France and the marvelous fight sequence between Bond and the Colonel set the tone and the pace for this fantastic movie. Tom Jones wails out the wonderful theme song amazingly well, although when Jones sings it now it's afew keys lower.
Not to spoil the plot, but once more our fantastic hero is called in once more to find two atomic weapons, stolen by SPECTRE, before they are detonated in a major city if a ransom is not paid. The plot takes Bond to the Bahamas where he meets Domino Durval ( played by the gorgeous Claudine Anger ) and the architect of the SPECTRE scheme, Emile Largo.
The only minus point I have for the movie is that with the large amount of underwater action it is hard to mantain a high leveled action movie pace at times and it shows. However, such small concessions considering the scale of the picture.
The DVD features are marvelous, as we are becoming use to with the MGM Releases of the James Bond movies. Documentaries, trailers and the marvelous Dolby Digital 5.1 soundtrack! That alone makes it worth the purchase if you have the system to appreciate it.
On the whole no movie collection should be without Thunderball. Even if it was a stand alone movie, outside of the Bond collection, the story, action and the delivery make it worth owning at the least.
After all this...... "I think you'll get the point..."

The Ghost and the Darkness - movie DVD cover picture
Contrary to criticism, this is an excellent film.

Lt. Col. John Patterson (Val Kilmer) is sent to Tsavo, Africa to build a bridge across a river, thus allowing the British railroad to enter deeper into Africa, bringing civilization and advancement into the Dark Continent. Once Patterson arrives, he is greeted by a situation in which a man-eating lion is harassing the workers and delaying the construction of the bridge. He goes out one night and kills the lion with one shot, winning the confidence of the workers and, therefore, pushing the project ahead of schedule.
Unfortunately, two more man-eating lions begin to make daily harassments on the work camp, killing over 30 men, and eventually halting the construction, in spite of all that Patterson can do.
Enter Charles Remington (Michael Douglas), famous and professional wildlife hunter.
The rest of the drama unfolds as we see how Remington and Patterson deal with the crisis as the death toll reaches over a hundred.
Contrary to many previous reviews on the movie, The Ghost and the Darkness is an excellent film. Brilliant cinematography, breathtaking scenery, and beautiful and robust music are only a part of this great adventure yarn (which is based, stronger than you might think, on the true story). The acting of all the actors, once again contrary to popular criticism, is very good; not "over-the-top" at all. The film has a robust and powerful feel that accurately echoes the ruggedness and strength of Africa and the great men who tried to tame her. The authenticity of the film's props (costumes, weapons, tools, vehicles, etc.) is also impressive. The special effects are perfectly convincing and the lions are real.
The film has a good length (an hour and forty minutes) and never loses its pace or sense of direction. The film is straightforward and, at many moments, downright powerful. The tension is strong and, yes, this film is better than "Jaws" in every way, not to mention more mature than the sharkie movie. And, "The Ghost and the Darkness" is much more than a mere thriller. It is also a historical drama of high caliber.
Warning: If you are a feminist, you will find this movie too "macho". But if you admire the indomitable spirit of the Victorian era's adventurers, you will appreciate the film's strong (and realistically imperfect) characters. And sorry, there are no sugar-cutie boys who run to Angelina Jolie for help and no Super-Chicks who come to save the day (thank goodness).
Well, if you have not seen the movie, rent it and watch it. I would buy it but purchasing it is up to you. I highly, highly, recommend this film.

Excellent DvD

The movie is excellent, supurb, a masterpiece. And the DvD is just as good. Starting from the fake warning when u pop it into ur player. To the loads of hidden eggs. The commentary is the best ive heard in awhile. If u want to know more about fight club listen to it. David Fincher tells u alot of the things that are unclear. Such as the Narrators name. he doesnt have one. the DvD mirrors the movie's pretence. It keeps u wondering. second guessing. ...this dvd will please everyone.

The Adventures of Captain Marvel [Serial] - movie DVD cover picture
Marvelous Captain

Movie serials were written for youngsters but, as screenwriter Barry Shipman observed, this was not a putdown: "No, it's for the 12-year-old in all of us." Republic did them best, and "Adventures of Captain Marvel" is one of Republic's best (some say THE best). The flying superhero is based on a 1940s to 1950s comic book character, who went out of business after being sued by DC, the publishers of Superman, as a ripoff (in more recent years, he has been acquired and revived by DC; go figure). DC had a chance to have Superman serialized at Republic, but passed (the script was revised to become "The Mysterious Dr. Satan" with a non-super hero); Superman serials later came from Columbia with cartoon flying sequences. When the promoters of the Chris Reeve/Superman movie said it would be the first time audiences would believe a man could fly, they obviously hadn't seen the Captain Marvel serial.

Thank you Nick.

You all are wearing me out with all these negative comments. This is our latest social code, it seems: to denote anyting attempting positive race relations as too much 'political correctness.' Have it your own way. The director of "Forrester" is the same director of "Good Will Hunting." Yes there are similarities. Your point? And while you're nitpicking about that, know that "Hunting" is also a variation of "The Karate Kid," "Scent of A Woman," "Dead Poets' Society," and a film from the 60's, "Loneliness of the Long Distance Runner." So film plots borrow from one another. Just watch the sublime, tender, witty, beauty of this movie and judge it on its own merits and for yourself. The 'conjunction' sequence between Connery and Brown debating proper grammar is special. Or the scene at Yankee Stadium where a broken Connery delivers a monologue to Brown (which I think should've garnered him an Oscar nomination). And the DVD has a nice appendix of the making of the film along with the original trailers. Isn't there room for appreciation of this movie along with all the others? After all, how different is THE WIZARD OF OZ from ALICE IN WONDERLAND?
