Oblomov - movie DVD cover picture
Oblomov is a work of art.

Oblomov is movie making at its best, although not for those looking for action or adventure. Everthing about this film is beautiful, particularly the music and scenery, both of which play an integral part in the story. Also, the acting is superb, especially Oleg Tabakov, who plays Oblomov.
At its heart Oblomov is a story about a soul's search to recapture the lost love of a child for his beloved mother. Oblomov, the title of the film and the name of the main character, is a quiet, introverted, unhappy Russian in his mid-thirties who is lost in his world of dreams. In much of the first part of the film Oblomov struggles to get out of bed. Only his childhood friend Stoltz has enough influence over Oblomov to rouse him from his lethargy and his dreams. Stoltz leaves for England and Oblomov promises to meet him in Paris. That promise is left unfulfilled.
Oblomov does move to his country estate in Part 2 of the film and he falls in love with his neighbor Olga. We watch as Oblomov attempts to share his feelings with Olga, but he is so insecure and unsure of himself that he can only stare at Olga with his heartbreakingly sad eyes. She tells him that she loves him, but at first, this drives him away. It seems that "his love is this fear. He nourishes it who can nourish nothing. Love's slipshod watchman."(Yevtushenko) Indeed, at one point, he sits all night in a gazebo outside Olga's window in a thunderstorm waiting for the sun to rise on his love. The viewer will not be surprised if Oblomov fails to connect with Olga.
Everything I have mentioned happens slowly and deliberately and might fail to keep our attention if it were not for a narrator who fills in some spaces with commentary about Oblomov's inner life and his history, told in flashbacks and with artistic stage sets. The most hauntinly beautiful music I have ever heard in a film supports the narration and those times when we quietly wait and watch in the countryside with Oblomov as he dreams about a life that might be. Both music and scenery add richness and depth to the story and give it a wholeness not often found in films.
Once viewed, we may select some favorite parts of the movie to add beauty to our day. Great art and music bring us back for second, third, and fourth encounters and this is certain to be the case for many people with this wonderful film. Highly recommended for the lover of theater, art, and music.

The Mother of All Film Noir Crime Dramas

This is one of the best examples of Film Noir ever produced. Everything about the production is dark and troubling, yet so fascinating that you can't turn away. The trio of Robert Mitchum, Jane Greer, and Kirk Douglas are central to the plot, and all are brilliant in their roles. Mitchum is perfect as the cool and smart former Private Investigator turned gas station owner who finds out that he still has entanglements from his previous life, Kirk Douglas is the absolute embodiment of a cold, calculating career criminal, and beautiful Jane Greer manages to ensnare everyone in her web of mystery and deceit.
This is the ultimate intellectual crime drama, and a viewing of this film could teach contemporary directors how suspense is supposed to be executed. The plot is so intricate and involved that I won't even discuss it, other than to say this: pay attention. The abrupt plot twists rarely, if ever, turn out like a first time viewer would expect, and the suspense created by director Jacques Tourneur is palpable.
The DVD is going to be released soon, and I will be sure to augment my VHS copy with the new DVD. This film really is one of the classics of American cinema, and is definitely as absorbing and engrossing as anything made in the last fifty years. For a wild and suspenseful ride, with a plot full of twists, turns, and surprises until the very end, don't miss "Out of the Past!"

The most frightening film ever made

This easily surpasses the amateurishly made "Blair Witch Project". This even surpasses "Night of the Living Dead", "Hush.Hush... Sweet Charlotte" or the original "The Haunting". Without gore or Special Effects and shot on a budget of about $ 30'000: If you want a movie that shocks the hell out of you, THIS is it.

Powerful and a refreshing change from plot-less movies

What I love best about this movie is that it allows people to come to their own conclusions. Not only is this wonderful to watch for its music and animation, but it also has a quality to it that the majority of movies today lack. It makes you think. There are so many intricate layers in this story that each time you watch it you catch sight of a few more meanings that you didn't see before. If you have been disappointed with movies that seem to lack focus, or plot, or message, or if you are tired of watching regurgitated ideas that hold no more value than that which is on the surface, Princess Mononoke is the movie for you.

Horribly Funny

To be honest, I thought this was a horrible movie. However, I also thought it was the funniest movie I have ever seen. There's not alot of movies out there about cannibalism that are funnier than heck, but this one is. From the first scene to the last, it's a laugh riot. I can't believe how they did this masterpiece on $125,000! Oh, The director's commetary is definately worth Listening to. If ya want to hear them get drunk whilst commenting on this flick, then listen to the DC. I find myself whistling the opening song almost daily. #The sky is blue, and all the leaves are green. The sun is warm as a baked potato# You just can't beat such absurd songs. in a way, this movie is like a drug - you just can't get enough of it. The only real downside is the bad acting. I admit, for them being in collage, they did a good job on the movie. The only "real" actor in this movie is the guy who played the prosecuting attorney, and even then he didn't do a wonderful job. But, all in all, this movie is defiantely worth looking at. Actually get it on DVD, that way you won't wear it out too fast. Also, You may recognize the opening song of the movis from the end of South Park - ya know the advertisement for the airline. Well, bon appetit.

Once Upon a Time in the West - movie DVD cover picture
Aesthetically and Cinematically Awesome

Sergio Leone's masterful western experience remains one of filmdom's most passionate creations. Every frame is lovingly made to create a film that is mythical, enchanting, and poignant. No other western is this beautiful.
This is a mix of the imagined and the real aspects of the Old West. The good guys are easily recognized and the bad guys are really BAD! Henry Fonda plays probably one of the most despical villains of all time. He is one whose path one definitely would not want to cross.
Leone basically designed the persona that Charles Bronson would have the rest of his career: the lone, silent individual always on a quest for vengeance. Bronson has many "quiet" scenes that are enhanced by the memorable Ennio Morricone score.
Veteran character actors Jack Elam and Woody Strode are brilliantly used in the opening credits which is worth the viewing. Claudia Cardinale is an intentional contrast as the sole female in a cast of rugged guys. Her beauty is illuminating to the stark grit of the western settlement to which she returns.
Jason Robards, Jr. and Lionel Stander round out the memorable character roles.
If Leone did so well with the Old West, just think what he could have done with The Civil War.

The Happiest Baby on the Block DVD - movie DVD cover picture

The SIMPLE techniques you learn by watching this video are amazing! They are really easy things to do to calm a crying baby. If you don't watch this video, you may be wasting hours watching your baby cry, when simply holding it in a certain position (one of the techniques in the video) may be all you need to do. We use these techniques all the time with our (almost) 6 week old. I bought about a dozen books on child birth and parenting before my wife and I had our first child. I am not a big reader. We read some of the books, but this video was probably the biggest help. It is filled with live demonstrations of the 5 main techniques. It is amazing to see how well it works in the video, and now for us. Judging by the average 5 star review on Amazon, I can tell a lot of other parents agree. If you are going to buy one item before (or after) having a baby, make it this video!

End of the Century - The Story of the Ramones - movie DVD cover picture
We're A Happy Family

My first exposure to the Ramones was when I saw "Rock 'N' Roll High School" in the theatre around 1981. I was fortunate to have seen them live on three occasions in the eighties. The operative word for a Ramones concert was FUN. I saw "End of the Century" in the theatre last fall in full expectation of recapturing the joy of attending a Ramones show. What I got was the equivalent of getting hit with a wet towel. Who knew that the band who could give such highly professional entertainment harbored disillusionment and resentment? Since recovering from the initial jolt I can view this DVD for what it is. It is a thorough examination of the band's history, their influences, their artistry, and ultimately their place in the rock 'n' roll pantheon. It is also an interesting study of the personality types of the individual band members and how that fueled their creativity. Highly recommended for those who unfortunately never got to experience one of the greatest rock acts. This DVD contains some deleted scenes that should not be missed. They were not incorporated in the finished product probably for continuity reasons but are nonetheless fascinating.
