The Core (Widescreen Edition) - movie DVD cover picture
OK, so what if the physics were laughable . . .

And as the narrative stated, 'what if we could?'! I read so much about this movie before it was released, so much negative press and so many amusing articles about the stupid movie physics of the story, and finally when I took my wife to see it we both had a whale of a time! In the story, the Earth's core stops rotating and it seems the only way to restart it, to prevent natural disasters getting worse, is to drill down there using a special ship and a crew of 'terranauts', and don't forget that ultrasonic laser dril! In the crew are a NASA astronaut played by Hilary Swank who brings down a shuttle in spectacular fashion and is assigned to the VIRGIL(as this drilling ship is named), Dr Conrad Zimsky(played by Stanley Tucci who really hams it up well when Zimsky's character flips!), a nerdy computer hacker named Rat(DJ Qualls) who has to instigate a massive worldwide cover-up to prevent worldwide panic and main man Aaron Eckhart as Dr Joshua Keyes who warns the authorities of impending doom. They naturaly misunderstand at first, until they meet Ed Brazzleton(played by Delroy Lindo), a reclusive genius who designed the laser drill and the special ship. The SFX are what really makes this one worth watching - lots of variety of underground rock formations and plenty of lava, a magnetic storm destroying Rome in a scene which looked awesome on the big screen, pigeons attacking tourists in London, San Franscisco's Golden Gate Bridge collapsing, and a suspenseful little underwater segment! And the ending is not what you might expect. Less overblown than say, VOLCANO or ARMAGEDDON and with a story much more intent on diving straight into the action with the right amount of character development(Keyes and Zimsky most notably), no unnecessary romantic subplots getting in the way(thankfully) and a mixture of tongue-in-cheek fun and genuinely exciting moments, THE CORE definitely delivers the goods. Highly recommended and don't listen to the critics!

A Dinner Date With Elvis In Vegas

ELVIS: THAT'S THE WAY IT IS is a great documentary about Elvis' classic stage show in Vegas. Actually, there are several parts to it. The first half is devoted to the practice sessions. In July of 1970 we see Elvis at the MGM studios in Culver City with his band (James Burton- Lead guitar; John Wilkerson- rhythm guitar; Ronnie Tutt- drums; Glenn Hardin- Piano; Charlie Hodge- acoustic guitar/vocals, water & scarves) going through various numbers. Elvis had just completed a marathon recording session in Nashville, and we hear Elvis & band honing these tunes for the stage show. Elvis is apparently having a lot of fun, joking around with his friends and musicians. He had an amazing personality & presence that really comes through here. By August 1970, Elvis moved into his residency: the International Hotel (now known as the Hilton). After a few weeks of further rehearsals (he is now joined by backup singers The Sweet Inspirations, Imperials, Millie Kirkham), the Elvis Summer Festival starts. The second half of the film is the stage show, recorded August 10,11 & 12 1970. Elvis sings these songs: THAT'S ALL RIGHT, I'VE LOST YOU, PATCH IT UP, LOVE ME TENDER, SWEET CAROLINE, I JUST CAN'T HELP BELIEVIN, TIGER MAN, POLK SALAD ANNIE, ONE NIGHT, HEARTBREAK HOTEL, YOU'VE LOST THAT LOVIN FEELIN, BRIDGE OVER TROUBLED WATER, SUSPICIOUS MINDS, CAN'T HELP FALLING IN LOVE. It is obvious that Elvis was still passionate about the music. He was in good shape, and still young in appearance. I love those classic white jumpsuits. A few more notes: The opening credits sequence of the original movie was filmed at the Phoenix Coliseum on September 9, 1970. I hope that more footage of this can be found, there does seem to be a bit more excitement going on there than the formal confines of the International Hotel. Check out ELVIS: THE LOST PERFORMANCES for additional footage from this movie, and ELVIS ON TOUR (1972).
The updated 30th anniversary edition contains a lot of alternate footage, which is welcomed, but the new presentation does NOT replace the original 1970 That's The Way It is, which remains the ultimate Seventies Elvis documentary.

The Wrong Guys are the Right Guys!

When I first sat in front of the Tv to watch this, it was on a cable station and I just happend upon it by mistake. However, it turned out it was far from a mistake!! If your looking for a good laugh and a good, clean fun movie, than this is what your looking for. It's slapstick at it's best when these 5 friends reunite after years of seperation and pick up where they left off as kids. AS they set off on their final camping trip to redeem their last chance for a cub scout badge they missed out on as kids, they run in to a wild ride as they encounter an escaped convict on their travels and they are mistaken for FBI agents on his pursuit and hijinks ensue. The combination of comedic star power is wonderful....they compliment each other and feed off of one another to creat a hilarious movie. Not everyone would agree with me but this has to be one of my top 10 all time favorites for comedy.

Boogiepop Phantom - Evolution 1 - movie DVD cover picture
Ingenious Tale

Boogiepop is very similar to Serial Experiments Lain, but has more character development (thanks to the persistent inner-monolgue narration) and even more insistent weirdness. Boogiepop is more refined and subtle, but just as hypnotic. The animation is a little better and the writing is more fleshed out.
Simply put, this series (so far) is a great follow-on for the Lain fan. The same style is back, with a very different plot and a new theme which is at once more down-to-earth yet more fiercely outlandish. To see the show is to understand.

THE BEST for toddlers !!!

We were surprised to see that these are not LIVE animation but none the less our toddler screams for all these dvd's. We adults now LOVE the way they used the pictures from the book to "animate" these 3 stories. And best of all she begs us to read her these books. Before she would never want us to read more then a handful of words but NOW she hangs on the words. And since on the DVD they have 3 shorts she is thrilled.

most of her new words from 18 months on are based on words she learned here. The teeth story is sweet as is Ten apples up on top.

Adaptation (Superbit Collection) - movie DVD cover picture
Adaptation (2002)

Director: Spike JonzeCast: Nicolas Cage, Meryl Streep, Chris Cooper.Running Time: 114 minutes.Rated R for violence, language, and mild sexual situations.
One of the most stunningly original films of the past decade, "Adaptation" is a triumph of uniqueness, hope, brotherhood, and perseverance. Director Spike Jonze tells the story of Charlie Kaufman (Nicolas Cage), a chubby, poor self-esteem stricken screenplay writer assigned to adapt the Susan Orlean novel about flowers into a film. As Charlie learns more about Orlean (Streep) and her obsession with the quirky Orchid lover John Larouche (played by Oscar-winning Chris Cooper, who was long overdue for the recognition, for he should have won for "American Beauty), he realizes even further that he does not possess the qualities to write a formidable script based on the book.
While he is attempting to write a script and loosing his mind in the process, Charlie is encouraged by his upbeat, yet overly annoying screen-writing brother Donald (also played by Cage; they are twin brothers) to write the story in a more traditional, Hollywood style. Charlie refuses this notion and flies to New York to meet Orlean in search of the perfect idea for his script. Through this journey, Charlie learns about what it means to love, what his purpose in life should be, and how a simple thing such as an orchid can change lives.
What makes "Adaptation" so intriguing is that it is a film about a screen-writer who is writing a script about the actual events that are transpiring on film. Jonze takes us on a crazy ride of emotions, through the troubled mind of Charlie, the desiring soul of Susan Orlean, and the zany antics of the grisly-toothed Larouche that envelopes around a theme that will touch all those who grasp it. Cage is wonderful as the joint brothers and Streep is stellar as usual in her supporting role. Although not for all due to the different beating of its drum, "Adaptation" is an essential piece of the modern film puzzle and truly a work of film stylistic art at its finest.

Aliens (Special Edition) - movie DVD cover picture

First of all, great picture and sound quality. Fewer features than Alien, but still a DVD to buy.
Secondly - one of the few sequels that surpasses the original. When I first heard about Aliens I was both curious and horrified. I was not impressed the first time I saw it but I found myself drawn to it, and watched it a few more times before finally admitting that it grew on me. It is probably the finest film of its type. In terms of style and characters, the first film is marginally better, but overall Aliens is just perfect. Thankfully the DVD is the Special Edition with 17 minutes of extra footage. I have seen the SE before but initial rumours said that the DVD would be the theatrical release. Not that I have anything against the earlier version, but once seen the SE is a must have.
