Not what you might expect. That's why I liked it.

to reinstate other reviewers' comments, this is NOT a Cirque Du Soleil performance... it is a movie ~inspired~ by Alegria; however, i'm disappointed that this is the inspiration they came up with.
the story could have worked the magical/mythical angle of joining the circus as a child -- and the wonder this represents -- but instead the story is dreary... more like children being sold into the circus; there isn't anything etherial about the film -- it's just depressing (inspite of the clown getting the girl).
there is almost none of the performances to grace the movie (there are bonus materials which basically are extended sequences of two 'performances') and -- here's the part that i felt cheated of... the music rarely appeared. the great title song, Alegria, didn't turn up until the VERY end and even then it was abridged!
i LOVE Cirque Du Soleil (why i made the mistake of rushing out to buy it w/o looking at the reviews) and this film captures none of the whimsy, wit, finesse or atmosphere of the performances.
rent it and judge for yourself before buying.

I love this movie!

Everytime I watch The Wiz I smile. The music just makes you want to dance. Do not watch this movie and compare it to the Wizard of Oz, it is not a remake. This movie is an interpretation of the book. It puts a wonderfully imaginative black twist on a familiar story. I had the video but the tape broke from watching it to much. I'm buying the DVD so that my 4 year old daughter can experience The Wiz. "Believe" and "Home" will bring tears to your eyes and "Ease on down the road" will make you want to do just that.

Supposed you proved there really are monsters under your bed? And what if you suddenly found yourself journeying with one of them into their very strange world? This is what happens when Brian meets Maurice, a wild, wacky, hip monster. His bizzare under-the-bed-world is everything a boy could want: no parents, all the junkfood you can eat, and no homework! Brian learns how monsters come up under any kids bed and uses this to payback the school bully, and gets trapped in a frightening nightmare that is all to real!
Hopefully you'll see animated menus and a theatrial trailer. Lets hope its in full and widescreen. This is an awesome movie, get it before it ends up under someone elses bed! Great family film!

Family Guy, Vol. 1 (Seasons 1 & 2) - movie DVD cover picture

This is by far the best cartoon series. The Simpsons is a legendary series itself. However, there have been weak episodes over the years- even weak seasons. The Family Guy did not have the same success as the Simpsons but I think I could have exceeded the Simpsons over time. I am very excited to buy more Family Guy dvd's.

Happy Campers - movie DVD cover picture

This movie is a wonderful flick that never made it to theaters. It should have been in theaters, and I'm not quite sure why it did not have a theatrical release. Happy Campers is a mixture between american pie and meatballs, about a summer camp that begins to go out of control. If you are a fan of good teen comedies, you should without a doubt buy this movie. Trust me, you will not be sorry.

Very good comedy

It's an idea crazy enough to work. Take Adam Sandler and put him on the PGA tour, then sit back and wait for the hilarity to ensue. Happy Gilmore is one of the funniest films of the 1990s, and it is actually pretty uplifting to all of us who love to cheer for the underdog. There's nothing really intellectual about this film, and that's perfectly OK. We have our underdog, Happy Gilmore; his only dream in life is to be a professional hockey player, but the only thing he brings to the ice is a quick temper. Then we have the lovable grandmother put in a precarious situation-her house, which her own late husband built, has been seized by the government as a result of her not paying taxes for ten years. Happy accidentally discovers his ability to hit a golf ball very, very far, tries to rustle up some money off of bets at the local links, and almost accidentally, with the help of Chubbs, the local pro who saw his own promising golf career come to and end after an unfortunate encounter with an alligator, finds himself on the pro golf tour. Then there is the undeniably arrogant and completely unlikable bad guy, Shooter McGowan, whose place atop golf's elite is threatened by the young upstart Happy. Of course, this kind of story calls for a leading lady, as well, and the businesslike yet increasingly desirable tour media director Virginia Venit (Julie Bowen) fits the bill to a tee (I swear this pun was entirely unintentional).
Of course, the funniest parts of the movie take place on the golf course when the hockey-minded Happy takes out his early frustrations. At his first pro event, he launches into one profanity-laced (mostly bleeped) tirade after another, throwing clubs, having in-your-face discussions with his uncooperative golf balls, and generally being very ungolfer-like. Of course, the fans love it, so the PGA decides not to throw him out. With Virginia's help, he manages to keep his behavior at a PG level, at least until the pro-am tournament. Faced with a relentless heckler and a constantly complaining partner in Bob Barker, he snaps and has a go at Bob. Hey, Bob Barker had it coming. Faced with a month-long suspension, everything is on the line, both his grandmother's house and his own future golf career, at the PGA championship where he and Shooter compete for the gold jacket. If you take away some of the profanity early on, Happy Gilmore is actually a pretty family-oriented little movie, and I for one certainly enjoy seeing the biggest underdog imaginable come out on top over the arrogant and despicable favorite.

Depends what you like......

The reviews of Walker seem to fall into two categories; those who flat out love the show on its own merits, and those who think that it is a classic for sheer awfulness. I happen to belong to the first category, with one caveat; I come to the show looking for more of the same kind of action that typified American martial arts movies in the 1980's. Nobody is ever going to mistake Chuck Norris for Peter O'Toole, but on the other hand O'Toole wouldn't have made a particularly convincing action hero. even his Lawrence was a plotter and a talker, not a fighter.

Nobody who calls Walker 'the worst television show' has ever seen a real turkey (like My Mother The Car, for example). And nobody who says that Norris is a dead awful actor has seen many really bad films .... or many of the '80's karate flicks either. Among the chop-and-kick crew from that era, Norris does rather well ... which is why he had a career rather than a handful of films descending from theatrical release to direct-to-video. Few Karate/Kung-Fu actors really act very well. Jet Li is learning, Chow Yun Fat is an actor first, Jackie Chan is a clown first and an actor second. The rest of the Honk Kong fraternity don't strike me as better than Norris. On our side of the pacific the only actor who really did both well was Brandon Lee. Seagal is a ham, Van Damn is about on Norris's level, and nobody else spring to mind. As for Norris in this show, well .... Walker doesn't stretch him much, which is good ... he didn't deal well with being stretched beyond a certain point. Instead the show plays to his strengths; a reasonably solid b-actor range, and physical action.

This isn't Law and Order. It isn't subtle at all. Subtle is fine in its place, but when you want to cheer on the good guys and boo the bad guys, Walker fits the bill to a "T".

Great series

If you've already seen the first season of Entourage, you'll be buying this set for sure. If you haven't seen it, you really need to buy these DVD's. The characters are engaging and the dialogue is hilarious. Jeremy Piven is a stand-out as he absolutely chews up and spits out every scene in which he appears. I hope that Season 2 is more than 8 episodes.

A wonderful story about the power of hope and compassion.

This is a story of a young woman with a second chance who picks a small town in Maine to start over. She battles with some small-town minds who are unforgiving but gains the love and support of some. The viewer gets to see lives being changed as each of the main characters struggles with their own issues. Suitable for family viewing although one part of the movie will need to be discussed with pre-teens. If you're looking for a movie with some good, old-fashioned messages of love-one-another, this is it. It's well done and worth more than one look.
