Not the Hitchcock of old...but brilliant nonetheless

Hitchcock's second last film is a tightly-written, well-acted suspense thriller featuring a luckless and underachieving hero being framed for murder, a cunning and psychotic villain whose murderous itinerary is detailed, a gritty and realistic directorial style from Hitch, a story set in a working-class milieu that is far apart from the glamorous and exotic settings of his earlier films, and one horrific murder scene in which the depiction of brutality and evil reached a new height for the director. This film is quite a world apart from the elegant, smooth, urbane suspense pictures he made in the 40s and 50s. But with the increasingly jaded audiences in the 70s, the change was probably inevitable. Still, Hitchcock's craftsmanship made FRENZY as exciting and memorable as his more traditional thrillers.
This DVD from MGM/UA presents the film in a new, widescreen video transfer and a Dolby Digital monophonic sound track. The picture looks a bit dark for my liking; unfortunately there is no "color bars" on the disc for me to test the display. Colors are bright and realistic, however. The audio is bright and sharp.
There is an original 45-minute 'Making-Of' documentary that features new interviews of actors Jon Finch, Barry Foster, and Anna Massey, a theatrical trailer (showing Hitchcock floating on the Thames), 100 or so B&W production photos, and the usual "production notes" and "cast biographies".

My all-time favourite movie

I went to the theatre with a mild interest for this movie. When I left it was a lot more than a mild interest! First off the musical score was breathtaking. It meshed so well with the gorgeous cinematography and the amazing action sequences.(I went out and bought the soundtrack on cd and still listen to it on a regular basis.) The acting is great, the direction superb(Michael Mann-also did Heat which is also on my all-time list),the story is classic to the sense-love,revenge,sorrow and honour. The only movie that almost made me jump out of my seat! About the director's cut DVD, I only have one complaint. In the scene of Magua's death it takes out the part where Chingachgook's weapon pierces through his back. I don't know about you but seeing that part excluded(minor as it may be) it took away a lot about that scene. The depth to the exacting of the revenge was by far diminished. I guess I'm being picky but that's the way I felt. However, the additional scenes in the director's cut did add to an already great movie.

Angel - Season Four - movie DVD cover picture
Apocalypse Nowish

After Three seasons of serial arcs Angel returns for a fourth season, which works better as a single 16 hour movie than 22 sepearte 45 minute episodes. Over the course of 22 episodes We find out the fate of Angel and Cordelia, Lorne becomes a lounge singer in vegas, everyone is reverted to there 16-year-old selfs, Cordelia Returns diferent, a demon brings about the apocaylpse, Angel loses his soul, wolfram & heart is distroyed, Cordelia becomes pregnant, and a Goddess is brought into this earth.
The fourth season of Angel is considered by many fans as either the worst or the best, that that is because that it was made for the fans. Everysingle piece of information that is brought on screen is imporant in its own way, even if it doesn't become apparent until 10 episodes later.
Like I said before that this season was made for the fans, and with saying this THIS IS NOT THE PLACE TO START WATCHING ANGEL!!! Season 1 is the best, but with a little homework you can start at season 3, but season 4 is impossible.

They're back

I was very excited to watch the last season. This one was one of the best. After somewhat disappointing 5th season with only 8 episodes, season six part one was great and back to its original fun, and witty ways.
I was glad there were 12 episodes in part one of season six. The story lines were finally related to the previous seasons, and it was good to see a flow in the story lines.
One of the best seasons, very funny!!!

I rented this at our local video store thinking it would be good because it had Don Knotts in it. But it wasn't good at all.The Movie was pure garbage vulgar, Immoral, not a family film. Not even an Adult Film. This was an immoral piece of garbage. I mean who wants to see such a vulgar film that is full on ideas about evil things.
Pile Of Garbage.
Save your money and buy one of the other 4 Don Knotts comedy Classics Instead!

Great DVD !

My 2 1/2 year old son is a fanatic Blue's Clues fan and he loved this movie as any other VHS tapes he owns. I, being a computer artist, loved it even more. The colors and the sharpness of the characters were outstanding. As a matter of fact, the images were so sharp, I could see the not-so-perfect compositing artistic errors on Steve's outline, which is something I could not pick up on VHS tapes. The extra features of the DVD are worth the money themselves. Great DVD for the money!

Classic Buffy episodes given OK DVD treatment

On March 3rd, 1997, the WB network introduced a series that today still defines quality TV. Its mix of comedy, action and drama have rarely been matched, even today. Now, finally, after years of waiting, American audiences can collect the stellar series, BUFFY THE VAMPIRE SLAYER, from the very beginning. This show chronicles the adventures of young Buffy Summers, a high school student who is revealed as the Chosen One destined to fight the demons and vampires that plague the world. Since this was a mid-season replacement, there were only 12 episodes in this 1st season. As always, Sarah Michelle Geller is at the top of her game in the title role, while Anthony Stewart Head is full of wry humor as Rupert Giles, her Watcher. The episodes, despite being filmed in 16mm, are sharp in both visual and sound quality. However, the special features are a little lacking. There's an insighful and amusing commentary by show creator, Joss Whedon, which covers the 2 part pilot for the show. However, the Whedon interview sections only covers only half of the episodes, being a hold-over from the old 3-pack VHS set. Also, the interview with David Boreanez (Angel) doesn't offer anything new. Some outtakes and making of featurettes would've been nice. Hopefully, future season sets will correct this flaw. However, the thing is the show and these episodes are classic and fun. I would highly recommend this to any Buffy fan or someone who cares about quality TV.

The Sweetest

I love this movie, it's so funny! I didn't like Christina Applegate before, but she totally rocks here. Cameron is always amazing, and I adore Selma, she is so sweet, she was the best in the "stuck" scene, so funny! My favorite was the "penis song", its hysterical.
The commentary was good also, that's why I get DVDs, because of commentaries. They got a bit annoying with the burping and farting, but its cool. I defiantly recommend this movie to anyone, especially if you are a fan of Cameron.

Gilbert & Sullivan - The Mikado / Conrad, Stewart, Revill, Opera World - movie DVD cover picture
Brilliantly done

This MIKADO video is an excellent production on every level. William Conrad does an excellent job as the eponymous title-role, even going as far as speaking in a so-called Japanese-English accent. Clive Revill, after many many years of playing the role of Ko-Ko, the Lord High Executioner, gives a marvellous and believable portrayal of the role here. The lovers and Katisha are all top-knoth, with Nanki-Poo as sweet and romantic as Yum-Yum, and Katisha fierry and commanding. As for the chorus, they are all supportive, and Alexander Faris's spirited musical direction is a treat as always. As with most of the other Brent-Walker G&S videos, the sound quality seems a little bit poor, but every word is still as crisp and clear as possible. The sets and costumes are all lush and sumptuous. Overall, this is a more traditionsal film compared to the 1987 English National Opera production, that I don't recommend very highly, that can hold its own with the best G&S films in the Brent-Walker series.
