Not just a chick movie!

This classic tale of good vs. evil has it all. Action, comedy, love and adventure. Like most fans of this classic tale I have waited (not too patiently!) for its release on DVD. This is a must see!

Ravenous - movie DVD cover picture
One of the best films in years.

Beautiful scenery, top-notch directing, Robert Carlyle, Guy Pearce, Jeffrey Jones, cannibalism - what's not to like?
RAVENOUS takes place in the winter of 1847. Guy Pearce plays Boyd, who due to the disgust of his commanding officer (Boyd capture an enemy commander, but only by playing dead), is send to a remote outpost in the Sierra Nevadas, run by Colonel Hart (Jones). One night, a half-dead man (Carlyle) arrives telling a story of cannibalism. And then the fun starts.
I am a film and video major, and from what I have been taught so far, RAVENOUS shows some of the best directing in years. The pace of the scenes and the brilliant performances (even by the overrated David Arquette) throw you deep into the story.
If you were disturbed by the amounts of gore in Braveheart, Dracula, or any run-of-the-mill slasher flick, then RAVENOUS is probably not for you. I like gory movies, so I didn't have a problem with it.
But RAVENOUS is far more than just a gory movie, it has all the elements of an artsy flick as well. The pyschological conflict between the two leads, the symbolism. The breathtaking scenery (shot in Slovakia) adds so much to an already great film. The music is at times haunting, other times funny, and always seems to belong. Costumes are great too.
Although labeled as a Dark Comedy, RAVENOUS is more than that. In fact, it doesn't fit well into any real genre, and I think that is the reason why it works so well. Comedy fans make not like it. Horror fans may not either. But any serious film lover (with an affinity for gore) will love RAVENOUS.
So, do yourself a favor and rent Ravenous (I wouldn't buy a movie until after I had seen it). You might be pleasantly surprised.

Still love this movie

I was a teenager when this movie came out. I'm now in my early 30's, and still love this movie. My husband, in his early 40's, also loves this movie. To heck with the kids, we grownups like it! Will continue to watch it occassionally for many more years to come. It's a great, lighthearted, family movie.

Hello Dolly is awesome

One of the best movie musicals of all time. It's dissapointing it doesn't get more credit. Barbra Streisand and Walter Matthou are great in the side spitting comedy. I recommend it to anyone who likes musical theatre.

Groundhog Day - movie DVD cover picture
A great movie to watch over...& over

With the actual Groundhog Day right around the corner, funny how the sales rank is high, haha, just an observation. This is another favorite movie of mine that I can watch over & over & enjoy a good laugh. Phil Connors is a self-centered character, & you find plenty of reasons to not like him. His day just repeats itself...over...& over, which I thought was an interesting movie concept. It's as if a higher power intentionally put this spell on him to try & make him a better person, cuz that was the only way it would happen. Rita, his sweet, unselfish co-worker, is totally unlike him, & he's quickly drawn to her.
It's hilarious watching him rehearse different things every day, trying to find out every little thing about Rita that he can. How we wish we could repeat some things in, job interviews & jobs, meeting the opposite sex, etc.!! You also start feeling sorry for him when he starts feeling dispair, & desperately wants a break from his curse. "This is pitiful....a 1000 people freezing their butts off waiting to worship a rat." He even attempts suicide, but he's still stuck!! After this point, the movie starts focusing more on his feelings for Rita, & how he's determined to win her by bettering himself,
He becomes inspired to play piano after hearing Mozart, remembering Rita mentioning that her dream guy has to play an instrument. Learning such an instrument from scratch requires so much patience & practice over a long period time. But we have to also constantly remember that trying to do anything well, whether it's self-help or just perfecting skills, requires regular & daily practice. Being a musician myself, I would definitely use that opportunity to do such things!! Just one of many examples that makes you wonder what would you do, & what would people you know do in his place?
I tried doing the same thing another reviewer mentioned, trying to count the # of actual days he's stuck in, but it's hard!! You become so wrapped up in it, you don't wanna even worry about it. The end left me believing that though we wish we had all the time in the world, we have to do best with the time we have (oh, they do mention that on Lord of the Rings, don't they?). We also have to realize we don't have endless chances to get things right. It reminded me of a Christmas Carol, how the character changes at the end. They couldn't have picked a better character than Bill Murray , & even if you're not really a fan of him, you can appreciate his character transformation (I personally like him, but I know some people don't). The other characters are also enjoyable & seem like regular real people. Definitely worth picking up & watching again & again on any cloudy afternoon!

Another Hitchcock-Grant masterpiece

Action and suspense are the two words that could never be described better than by the title "North by Northwest". Cary Grant(who had worked previously with Hitchcock in Suspicion,Notorious, and To Catch A Thief) heads off a cross counrty thriller that is not only exciting but witty and over-all well directed. Right up there with the other Hitchcock masterpieces and probably the best, next to Vertigo, this a must see.

Jurassic Park is no longer just a movie, it's a phenomenon!

What can I say about this movie that hasn't already been said in thousands of reviews previously. I love this movie. I love dinosaurs. Ever since 1st grade(I'm almost 34 now)I've loved these beasties. The whole Jurassic Park Trilogy (and how long will it simply remain a trilogy?!?)are simply great, sit-down, grab a bucket of popcorn, eye-candy movies. Plot? They have some, but if you want plot, watch Shindler's List, or Gone with the Wind. This is dinosaurs running wild, and what's wrong with that? Oh, the Tyrannosaur scene is still the best "movie monster" scene ever!

Snapshot Was First Used As A Hunting Term

What a great line from a great movie. I saw this film on a Saturday and I was expecting the same great acting that Robin Williams served up in 'Insomnia' and a okay thiller movie. What I got was much more. By the time the credits finished rolling, 'One Hour Photo' was my favorite movie. I saw a possiblity of nine Oscars.
Best Picture; If this movie doesn't get at least a Best Piture nod, I will have offically filled the Oscars in the catergory as the People Choice Awards, Teen Choice Awards, American Movie Awards, and all those other meaningless award shows.
Best Director: Mark Romanek; Through watching the movie, I could tell that Romanek really cared about the project and he really showed what movies are supposed to be.
Best Actor: Robin Williams; If he doesn't get this award it will be the Academy's biggest mistake since bypassing Jim Carrey's proformance in 'The Truman Show'. Williams' protrayl of Sy Parrish is one of the greatest things he has ever done, if not the best. Sorry Hanks, but Williams has proved that he is the best actor this year.
Best Original Screenplay; This movie proves my idea that any storyline can make a great movie. Heck, with great writing you could turn American Pie in to a Best Picture. The way the story is written really breaks out of the typical triller mold.
Best Set Design; The use of colors in this picture is one word: FLAWLESS. The Sav-Mart is remarkably constructed
Best Costume Designing; The costumes went hand-in-hand with the great colors in the set.
Best Score; The music is tense when it's needed, subtle when needed, but always fit for the scene.
Best Make-up; The only thing make-up related was Sy's hair, but it worked in with the puzzle that is his character.
Best Visual Effects; Just like the make-up, there was only one effect related scene, the bleeding 'Red Eye' scene. However, the effect didn't look hoax-y or fake.
There you go people. If you haven't seen this movie, run as fast you can to the closest theater playing this emotionally charged thiller. But seeing as how it is limited release, it could be severeal miles to the closest theater playing it.
