Not just a "cartoon". Much, much more

Like everyone else who worships this series, I too lived and breathed Star Blazers in my youth. Right after school, at 3:30 on Channel 11 (but occasionally in the morning at 7:00), was my time to get lost in another world. In fact I vividly recall my mother, during the show's morning performances, waking me up for school by turning on my little black and white tv, and I would be roused from my slumber to the theme song: "We're off to outer space..." What a great way to start a day! I tear up just thinking about it. And of course my friends and I would discuss that day's episode at school. Unforgettable, irreplacable memories. Growing up has not lessened the experience one iota, since Star Blazers contains all the drama and excitement of any adult tv show, without the language and nudity (though apparently some skin existed in the original Japanese version). The character development is staggering (due to the amazing voice actors); the frustration of loss and the elation of victory is palpable.I prefer the Comet Empire Series only slightly more than the Iscandar series because the artwork is a little better, though neither of them have truly bad artwork. It's not the hi-tech modern anime that we're used to now, but rather the acorn from which it grew. The scene at the beginning of the series where the Star Force is gathered at Captain Avatar's Memorial and the new Andromeda battleship flies toward them covered in lights was quite an advanced piece of work for the time, but that sort of technique wasn't used often in the series. The dvd extras with the original voice actors is too good to be true, and it's a shame they weren't used on the Bolar Wars series. I will not watch it due to that little detail. It just isn't the same. Wildstar, Venture, Nova, Sandor, Conroy, Orion, et al. are forever to be associated with the voices from the first 2 series. Even though I realize the Argo should have been destroyed 100 times over with the damage it received (especially from the Comet Empire's "hidden" ship), I will not let that minor technicality sway my opinion of this remarkable, intelligent, moving story. The music is great, the voice actors make you truly feel close to the characters, and the drama and heroism is unmatched by any other "mere cartoon".

DVD Limited Edition is the one to own!

If I were to rate this movie on its own I would give it four stars, mainly because its not a movie that sticks with me, its just fun to watch once in awhile. This limited edition package is really quite nice. When you take the wrapping off you will notice the case isn't like anything else. If anything, its originality is similar to the Fight Club's packaging. It opens up much like a book, which I think is really cool. As for the contents on the DVD's themselves, Disc One contains both a fullscreen and widescreen version of the movie, and Disc Two holds all the goodies. There is a feature where you get to watch two scenes being broken down from the first storyboards to the final cut. That is interesting to watch. Another original feature is a scene editing workshop, that lets you "try" and be and editor. This feature took a little while to figure out how to use, but once I tried it out, I realized how bad I would be at editing a movie :) Overall, this is a nice dvd to have, although it is anywhere from $5-10 more than the regular version, so it is a bit pricey. My suggestion would be only spend the extra money if you really like this movie.

Dare or T R U T H...

Outstanding documentry on the Israeli and Arab conflict on top quality DVD imagery and sound. The series carries viewers from the roots of this conflict to the most recent events when Benyamin Netanyahu was Prime Minister of Israel. Contains abundant newsreels, rare footage and an impressive line of interviews with the significant leaders involved in this historical conflict. Terrific layout of all the events for anyone desiring to obtain a good understanding for what is going on in the Middle Eastern Core. Highly recommended for anyone interested in the history of this region.

Babysitting Grandma

The previous reviewer seems to have many problems, none of which were caused by repeated forced viewings of Wee Sings "Big Rock Candy Mountain". The fact that this person's friend wanted to watch it over and over again is proof that this is one very enjoyable and imaginative film My grandkids enjoy all the colorful characters and upbeat songs/dances. The 2 year old will ask for this movie by simply saying: "Foo Foo".

thunderous hit!

This film was a runaway hit back in 1993, and still carries quite a punch today. If a really deep story and plot are what you are looking for, go elsewhere. If you want jaw-dropping effects, sheer amazement, and spine-tingling chills, look no further. The point of this film is that dinosaurs can now be produced by cloning. That said, many different species have been created and put into a park setting for tourists to ride through and spend money in. Naturally, the parks developer doesn't see the danger involved, only the happy faces of children the world over as they hear that dinosaurs once more walk the earth.Of course, things go wrong. A disgruntled employee shuts the park systems down in order to steal and sell dino-embryos to an outside competitor. Of course, a tropical storm hits at just that time, disrupting his and everyone else's plans. In the chaos that ensues, several big dinos escape their pens, notably the T-Rex, who then proceed to have a buffet meal of the visitors. The main principles among the humans escpae at the end, leaving the dinos free to do what they will. Being a dinosaur fan since early childhhod, I was thrilled this movie came out. When the first sauropod walked majesticaly across the screen, I was in awe. It all seemed so real! That feeling of awe was keenly built by Spielberg in this film, which then was turned into a feeling of danger, then to doom. The real stars of this movie are, of course, the dinosaurs, both CG and robotic and puppet. They intermove with the real people so seamlessly you believe they are real as well. This was one I very quickly added to my DVD collection, where it has provived many hours of enjoyment. The picture transfer is perfect, and the sound is incredible.Despite some flaws, like one-dimensional charactors, amd weak plot, the breathtaking special effects more than make up for it, and make this one worth owning.

If there were more stars...

I figure most people reading these reviews have seen this movie, but they just want to know if their opinion is in synch with others. This has to be among the five best movies ever made. I honestly cannot think of one negative thing to say about this film.

One of the genre's best

Just watched Basket Case for the 2nd time and my God is it touching. No, seriously, it's really sad. Such a great little horror movie with some good gore, decent acting, great direction, but be prepared to feel sympathy for the main characters. Their existence is a depressing one and this movie is able to do everything one would expect from a good horror movie and manages to do it very originally. Themes of revenge, sexual repression, loneliness, traumatic childhood . . . it's all here. A low budget, indie film doesn't get much better than this.

Great modern perspective on the tale for all generations

I was really afraid this was going to be a "chick flick" (which it was) but there was SO much story, acting, and excitement that you forget about that.
There were three college guys in front of us that were making fun at the first and wiping tears by the last.
The only bad thing is that ONE line "I schall tury (i shall try)".

Underappreciated

This is a great series to follow, not only for minority viewers but for everyone. While it focuses on some issues unique to people of color, the main focus of the show is on the strength, power, and importance of family; which is a lesson for all people. I am shocked and disappointed that after waiting patiently for close to 3 years, Paramount seemingly refuses to recognize the many fans of the series that span the color spectrum, and thus have failed to release Seasons 2-5 on DVD. Soul Food, at only 5 seasons, was the longest African American drama on television, if only for that reason I would think it deserves the accolades given so easily to other shows like the Gilmore Girls ( a lesser watched gem that managed to have two seasons on DVD). Additionally, they have priced the DVD so unrealistically that it makes it hard for fans to buy it and gives Paramount a reason not to put out the other seasons. I urge people to buy this DVD and enjoy this wonderful and soulful show.
