Worth the Wait!

I was one of the lucky few who was able to attend one of these special nights at the Borgata Casino in Atlantic City. One of only two performances ever of the acoustic reworked versions of old friends. While the album was innovative, the live performance was a revelation. In this intimate setting the lyrics become more meaningful. Bad Name becomes a bluesy steamy number for example. It's My Life a poignant ballad of hope. Jon had pulled two new songs off the album but they are here. If you are at all concerned and disappointed lately at the disposable nature of music today do not miss Last Man Standing. This song should be required listening for anyone involved in the music industry- Janet and Justin are you listening? If that wasn't worth the price of the DVD alone check out the cover of the old Dr. Hook classic Sylvia's Mother. This country rock version is soulful and passionate. An impromptu acoustic Love for Sale which happened the first night due to technical difficulties opened the set the second night and got the crowd going and it is included here. Other favorites not on the TLFR CD are also here such as Saturday Night and Misunderstood. The extra features all value. If you get the limited edition you get to play poker with the guys and if you win you get to see footage from their legendary Hyde Park Concert of 2003 which drew 92,000 people to the park on a Sunday in June. If you are poker challenged you can go right to the footage but playing with the guys is a lot of fun. Bon Jovi should be proud of this DVD- Tony Bongiovi, the director went out of his way to make this more than the usual concert DVD.

Firefly to good to live

You love Buffy and Angel, and you have heard of this show, which was also helmed by Joss Whedon, and you heard it was canceled, and that its Sci Fi. Not really being too excited about wasting your money, but curious about the show, you've meandered over to the customer review section at Now you've met me (Hello!)and I say, "Firefly is the show that was too good to live." You wonder what I mean by this, and, to your excitment (OK, I'm being melodramatic) you discover that I am now about to explain. And I say...
I was just being ironic. I don't believe there was a conspiracy to kill Firefly because it was too good, it's just that Firefly WAS so good, it figures that it would only last fourteen episodes and then be axed.
Firefly, as I imagine it, was the imaginative playground of an extraorinarily creative team of artists who give free rein to their every latent productive urge that could not be expressed on Buffy/Angel. Firefly seems to have been designed in such a way that almost any genre or theme could be explored in a variety of strange and fascinating combinations that would have been impossible in any other format.
The show combines its thematic twists, genre busting, and stylistic conventions into a postmodern brew that comments on the contemporary while projecting it into the future and past.
With nine fascinating and charasmatic characters introduced in this series, the possibilities would have been endless for a show such as this. One can only imagine where Whedon and crew would have taken this show, but faint glimmers are hinted at by a variety of nestled clues and hints.
It is very depressing that it was canceled, but its unfinished nature does not make it to unworthwhile to watch, for we have fourteen existing episodes. And what makes them so great to watch is the obvious love the artists put into the show, and how much fun it obviously was to make.
I cannot recommend this show highly enough. The show was not designed to be a cash cow, but as an outlet for the expression of the artisic potentials of some very talented individuals for whom this show was obviously no joke (though frequently hilarious). The show was created by some very intelligent minds, and it does not stupify its content; like Hitchcock, it functions wonderfully on two levels, entertaiment and intellectual. No matter how short this star burned, its light was bright, and it leaves an afterburn in the mind, which inspires both heartfelt gratitude and the grief of dashed potential.

Very amusing movie, with superb sound- and picture-quality

Ok, I'm no kid but I liked the movie very much. Very funny and entertaining. Incredably nice animation. For home-cinema enthousiasts I can add that the DVD has superb picture and sound-quality. Maybe even better then 'the Mummy' or 'The 5th element'.

Unbreakable: A True Winner

This is a wonderful movie that takes pains to be intimate and realistic about the see-saw balance surrounding what we call normal.
Willis and Jackson play both ends of this scale realisticlly.
This is a classic superhero origin story played out in very real terms.
I'd love to see a sequel, although I doubt one could be done that doesn't stretch the bounds of believability much beyond where this one does.
Must see. Go see.

Far From Perfect, but close to perfection!!!

Julianne Moore was magnificent in both "The Hours," as a suburban 1940's housewife, unhappy with her life and family, hiding repressed sexual feelings toward her best friend, Kitty, and in "Far From Heaven," as a 1950's housewife whose husband is hiding his homosexuality, but is unable to control his sexual feelings toward members of the same sex. This made me wonder, can an actress be nominated for two Oscars in the same year--one for Best Actress and one for Best Supporting Actress? She certainly deserves it. Julianne Moore is most certainly an exceptional artist, playing her roles with renewed vigor and great emotion. While both story-lines may sound incredibly similar, the character of Cathy in "Far From Heaven" cannot be more different than that of Laura Brown in "The Hours," and Moore plays both characters wonderfully. Cathy is a loving wife, devoted to her husband and two children. She is living the perfect 1950's suburban life, until her husband's secret obsession threatens to tear their family apart. Dennis Quaid is superb as her husband, and Dennis Haysbert is surprisingly successful in his portrayal of the man who comforts Cathy in her time of need. The feel for the era is most certainly there, and Todd Haynes does a brilliant job of directing, as well as adding little touches here and there. This is much like a sitcom from the 50's, which quickly takes a few drastic turns. Sexuality and racism are explored as things take a turn for the worse. "Far From Heaven" is truly engrossing, wih great performances all around, including Patricia Clarkson, an underrated actress who plays best friend to Cathy. This is a heart-felt and powerful film. A definite must-see for anyone who appreciates a good film.

Great movie

This is Big Idea's first attempt at a feature film and I thought they did a very good job. The film has lots of humor for both adults and kids. The animation is quite good, and it several good lessons to be learned. There are several music videos to listen to on the DVD as well.
