No prison can hold Rutger

Modern prison of the future, prison without fences but lethal for anyone who tries to escape. Add Rutger Hauer as main star and you have big shot! Interesting action scenes, a lot of fun and Rutger's cold humor. This is TV movie, but it's a lot better than many I've seen in theaters lately. It surely deserves *****.

Space 1999 - Great SciFi series

I remember this series as a child. Two major stars from the "Mission Impossible" tv series went after Star Trek--"Holy Shatner!" and gave Star Trek a good run for their money. Good series. If you like SciFi, you will love this series of dvd's.

Leontyne Price - The evolution of an artist

"The Art of Leontyne Price" is a fascinating DVD showing a little known Leontyne(1958) as well as the grand diva she grew to be.
Madame Price was no novice to the stage when she recorded the Aida scene in 1958, but she was definitely not the polished artist that she was to become just a very short time later. New Yorkers knew her phenomenal voice in the early fifties and in 1955 she sang Tosca in a nationally televised performance. (I am anxiously waiting for that to come out on DVD.) The 1958 scene shows a fiery vixen that has yet to be tamed. The voice is young and fresh with that characteristic flutter vibrato in her high silky tessitura. Even with the sound quality from this old recording one hears the beginning of those lush sensual vocal colours which were to become her trademark all over the world.
The diction was better in those early years. On a down note, the acting left much to be desired. The "fiery vixen" did calm down, or should I say, controlled her stage presence in later years, but here there is only raw temperament and overly exagerated facial expressions. At times, I had the impression that she was doing a silent movie. The director should have worked out the flaws before taping. She seems to be more true to herself and to Aida when she is just singing and not "acting".
In the 1982 concert we see Leontyne the Great. A full, rich, voluptuous instrument and a truly grand dame of the stage. She begins with "Come scoglio" from Mozart's Cosi Fan Tutte. It was an exciting brave beginning but the aria no longer settled comfortably into her voice. As the evening progressed and she warmed up, we heard the true greatness of the magnificent lady. "My man's gone now" from Gershwin's Porgy and Bess was tragic, painful, and profound. Her famous vocal colours were all evident here and her rubati and "blue notes" all enhanced Gershwin's American jazz background which he so artfully orchestrates into a new exhilarating form of classical music-an American music! Madame Price also offers renditions of some of her most famous Italian arias including the Pace, pace, mio Dio. Once you have heard that you know why she was called the "Diva di tutte le dive!"
This DVD is a "must" for all Price fans and lovers of great singing.

A wonderfull movie that gives comedy a new meaning. This movie is the new parody for all the latest box office hits. It includes visual effects that won't embarrass any special effects movie displayed today. Also, the movie take all the blood, guts and theory out of all the movies we loved to see, and ran to buy, and assembles them in a mixture that is un-believable in it's marvel. RUN AND SEE!!!

I Am A HUGE Fan!

The two most painful movie-watching experiances I've had were sitting through Jackson's first two adaptations of the trilogy. It's rather sad that Bakashi, with half the screen time to work with, was able to be more faithful in adapting JRRT's plot and dialogue for FotR. Yet as horrific as Jackson's first movie was, his second was a crime against the soul of the book.
It's a shame that generations of people will be getting their first view of JRRT's work through Jackson's adaptations rather than the books and JRRT's own vision and words.

A Film To Remember, A Legend To Never Forget

Where can I start here, there is so many great things about this wonderful film. First of all, it hits all the right notes, pun intended, the music is all Ray's and it's great to have so much of it blasting through the speakers of a theater. That, is only a small reason why this film is as incredible as it is, the main reason I love this film as much as I do is from a performance of a lifetime by Mr. Jaime Foxx, years ago it may have seemed to be a joke that Foxx could pull something like this off, but if he doesn't get noticed by the Academy, something is truly wrong. The film itself runs at what would normally be a bit too long for some, 2 hours and 33 minutes, but this film flows so smoothly that at no time did I get bored, in fact, by the end I wanted more, a lot more, but when you make a film on someone's life, you gotta end it somewhere, and I feel it covered enough to make it the great film it is. This is one of the best bio pictures I've seen in a long time, probably since A Beautiful Mind. Go see Ray, even if you don't consider yourself a fan of Mr. Charles, you may be surprised by the end of the film, and possibly end up buying a few of his cds. Ray Charles Robinson, I love you, and so does many more, may this movie help you be remembered, you will be missed.

Quite possibly THE documentary film of 2004

I saw FAHRENHEIT 9/11 on oepning weekend. Twice. And I want to see it again. It's just that good.
Michael Moore's fourth full-length documentary feature starts with the 2000 Presidential election debacle, but quickly accelerates to September 11, 2001, where the attacks are handled with surprising sensitivity and grace. The majority of the film, however, deals with the Bush/Saudi/bin Laden connections that may have complicated America's response to 9/11, the subsequent wars in Afghanistan and Iraq, and the backroom business deals that may have provoked both campaigns.
FAHRENHEIT 9/11 does pull a couple of punches - Moore does not discuss Honduras' pullout from the "Coalition of the Willing" because of John Negroponte's appointment as Iraq's US ambassador, and he doesn't target the apparent complicity of American media as much as some may have wanted. Other than that, Moore hits the target with surprising and devastating force (and some well-placed humor) every time.
This is a sobering indictment of the George W. Bush administration and a must-see for everyone on both sides of the political aisle. Don't wait - see it today.

Fun for all ages

I recently bought Zoe's Dance Moves for my niece's 3rd birthday. She LOVES it. The different dances keep her attention and up and moving the whole time. The nice surprize is that my 7 year old niece who thinks she is too old for Sesame Street is mesmerized by it too. She dance right along with Paula and Zoe. It nice to have a DVD they can both agree on and are up dancing to vs. sitting and watching. And as always with Sesame Street the multi-ethnicity is great.
